ftfy

Turkey with a side of Greece.

People think they're named after the Huns, but in fact they're named after a much later people, the Onogurs, a Turkic tribe.

Greece with a side of Albania
Fuck

We are descended from the Huns

Its Hungary, and it's inhabitants are named HUNG-ARYANS

It's not a laughing matter!

Yah huh, yet they speak a language unrelated to Turkic...

this, but unironically

No joke, I worked with a Turkish guy once (older immigrant). Pretty nice overall, but he DID get butthurt over the bird turkey being associated with his country. I remember once around Thanksgiving him going on about how dare they name a dumb bird after his wonderful #1 country.

The Onogurs were actually a confederation, and Turkic confederations regularly had non-Turkic tribes as members/vassals (the same as the Huns). Regardless the Latin/Greek name for them (Ungri/Oungroi) comes from the Slavic name Oguri, and its still up for debate if the name refers to the Onogur confederation or an earlier name the Slavs gave to generalize Uralic natives.

Well i've got thousands of text file links saved too from the last decade alone, if i would pull them all it would fill several hdd's most likely

Such as? Genuinely curious

I laughed audibly

Off the top of my head, Hungary, Bulgaria, Turkey

I once had the great displeasure of rooming with a Turk. He was smelly, gluttonous, didn't wash himself, argumentative, atheistic, and overall horrible to be near. I hope this one Turk is not representative of all Turks.

>. I hope this one Turk is not representative of all Turks.
You got lucky

He does know it's just a coincidence, right?

>just a coincidence

>1540s, originally "guinea fowl" (Numida meleagris), a bird imported from Madagascar via Turkey, and called guinea fowl when brought by Portuguese traders from West Africa. The larger North American bird (Meleagris gallopavo) was domesticated by the Aztecs, introduced to Spain by conquistadors (1523) and thence to wider Europe. The word turkey first was applied to it in English 1550s because it was identified with or treated as a species of the guinea fowl, and/or because it got to the rest of Europe from Spain by way of North Africa, then under Ottoman (Turkish) rule. Indian corn was originally turkey corn or turkey wheat in English for the same reason.

I think he really did imagine a greater conspiracy to smear the Turkish reputation.

It was common to name products for their (assumed) origins. The whole trail of imports wasn't known or asked about... Yea, turkeys were misidentified with guinea fowl (which resemble blackish gangly looking chickens, and they much prefer trees -- pretty delicious the few times I've had it!).

It's a similar history with the Muscovy (aka "Barbary") duck.

>Barbary duck
I´d like to have the backstory on how duck from Russia is associated with the berber states. Did they import that too?

It's not from Russia at all. It's also an originally Mexican bird. :^)
