No. The hookgrip is different.

So why does this help?

You use your thumb to essentially lock the bar into place so it doesn't slide out of your hands. It puts a large amount of strain onto your thumb, but that's the alternative to mixed grip. Mixed grip is generally fine for anyone at a general level. Just make sure to not use one side dominantly to avoid unbalanced and bicep growth. Bicep tendon tears are uncommon in the first place. It's usually incorrect form or lifting weight beyond your ability to that causes bicep tendon tears while deadlifting. It's why they unintentionally try to assist their deadlift and then fuck their shit up. That or their biceps are weak, which is why curling is essential to strongman training.
