i have somewhat the same mentality when it comes to deadlifting. Ive progressed extrememly slowly compared to other people. Took me 3 years to get to 405 because im scared of snapping my shit again. So i would say just always focus on form. Theres a difference between feeling a pump/tightness and feeling pain. Push yourself slowly while focusing on progressing through strict reps and more volume before increasing weight. Thats with anything obviously, but ever more important with deadlifts.

I do it to help me remember to hip hinge instead of flex my spine, helps me focus on contracting my whole glute muscle group really well before I pull, especially if I'm gripping and ripping.
