on a side note how did the ottoman get so powerful in such a short amount of time?

Achaemenid Persia under Cyrus
Mongol Khaganate under Kublai
British Empire under Victoria
Russian Empire under Nikolai II

Nikolai II's Russia couldn't even beat the fucking Bolsheviks

Are you retarded?

Sobieski's Poland. They obliterated elite Ottoman units at Khotyn

Also, same thing happened 52 years earlier.

>Short amount of time.
They've been building up power since the 1300s.

Strategic central position, power vacuum caused by collapse of the byzantines, adapting new technologies and strategies early on, general period of political instability and chaos allowed them to expand quickly without much in the way of opposition.

The Ottomans were very much a product of the crossroads between Asia, Arabia and the Mediterranean. Turkic horse archers, Gazi religious warriors/mercenaries and later a standing army of Jannisaries gave the Ottomans a lot of options and apparently allowed them to swing above their weight.

This combined with the era of "gunpowder empires", whereby states needed to be large enough to support effective artillery and firearms to survive, and naval power allowed the Ottomans to bring a lot of smaller polities into the fold.

See the reason the ottomans become as strong and expanded as they did wasnt because of some sort of "elite" ottoman soldiers, it was because of their superior logistics and utilization of manpower, which is why you have those meme balkan battles by balkanite historian where hundreds of men defeated millions of turks yet the ottomans literally cant stop advancing deeper into europe all the way to vienna while allegedly lossing millions of men

>defects to losing side
what did moldavia mean by this

Because the ottoman actually won the war in the end

It took me more than a minute to visualize the map.

Spain.

I think he meant powers that existed in 1566

Ming China

>Iberia+Italian states is one country now

Under Charles V Spain was the most powerful empire.

Canada in current year

>Anatolia,Jordan,Syria,Palestine ,Egypt,N.Africa and the balkans are 1 country

Are you actually retarded?
Spain didn't own Venice, Genoa, Tuscany, or Savoy, so they were all seperate countries.
The Ottomans ruled Turkey, Jordan, Syria, Palestine, Egypt, NA, and the Balkans under the same banner, hence it was all one country.

>Nicholai II
>Beating anyone and/or anything at all

The spaniards and italians got trashed pretty hard by barbarossa though.

...

>post-mongol northeast slavs who somehow even bothered with cold uninhabited shitholes

Ming empire

France or Spain of the same period if they bordered the Ottomans and didn't have any other power to contend with.

That's incredibly creative naming.

This+1

this. holy warriors flocked to the early ottoman beylik bc it was on the byzzie frontier, janissary corps early adoption of gunpowder helped a lot, their entire empire was geared towards being an infidel-killing war machine (which led to a lot of problems down the road btw)

big slavic boys aka poland and russia
balkanshit dont count though

The HRE defeated Mehmed IV at Vienna in 1683, at the time when the Ottomans were at their territorial peak, it also included Poland-Lithuania in the war so not exactly a 1v1.

Russia was really the only one nation who could go toe-to-toe with the Ottomans at their height and win, exemplified by Peter the Great's victory over them in Crimea/Azov prior to the Great Northern War.

the Ottomans weren't just fighting the Portuguese at the time doe, still pretty cool how the Portuguese did so much shit in the otherside of the world while only having a population of 1 million

>Spain
>1v1
Every war Spain had with the Ottomans, Spain brought along its european friends and asked the Pope for a meme Holy League to be convened.

>HRE
>France

Turkish peak was at 1540/50

For concurrent states around during the Ottomans’ peak? The only two polities which consistently competed with them were the Hapsburg empire and Safavid Persia.
Hypothetically Russia may have held its own as well. France night do okay, but I don’t know how good their naval power in the med was at the time.
Weren’t the Mughals around by this time? I think they’d do pretty well.

>Tsardom of Russia
>Habsburg Empire
>Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth
>Cossack Hetmanate
>toe to toe
