So multiple people - of unknown knowledge and skill, it should be mentioned - have insisted to me that because the hamstrings are a two-part muscle, you WILL develop imbalances without a knee flexion exercise, including but not limited to leg curls and GHRs.

This means that while hamstring-driven hip extension is necessary, it is not sufficient for avoiding injury or having a balanced routine.

Thoughts? For the record I am unsure.

according to candito's video with bret cont contreras, sumo deadlift develops the glutes about as much as the conventional, but does anyone know about the upper back, the core and the hamstrings?

Well hammies are hip extensors and knee flexors, so if you ignore one its roles it'll likely end up causing problems down the line. Adding in some leg curls or GHR is an easy addition that'll keep em healthy. Plus most people need more hamstring work anyways.

ye but the knee flexor component is trained isometrically, the discussion is probably more along the lines of asking if that's enough. My gym only has somewhere to do nordic curls, can't do GHR or leg curls (shitty gym)

Makes some sense. The big issue is that one of the four hamstring heads is solely a knee flexor since it inserts below the hip joint, so it gets basically no work from hip extension. It's also the one that tends to be most involved in knee stabilisation.

So while not necessary, it's probably in the same category as remembering to do your curls for elbow health.

that's basically the conclusion I've arrived at too. Oddly this seems to be very infrequently discussed when people talk about knee health though (in my experience anyway having researched that shit for years after my surgery)

could it be possible that a stance as narrow as possible (semi sumo) be better for muscle building? I know that I won't lift the most weight that way, but this is not what my goal is anyway

there are a few ways in my experience to make friends when you don't really have any (e.g. moving to new city)

1. join a small-ish gym built around, e.g. powerlifting, where you'll see the same regulars. You can then hang out with them. First it's grabbing lunch after lifting on Saturdays, then maybe going out for kbbq after work, then laser tag or some shit

2. join a sports team or club. This is enforced cameraderie

3. go back to university and live in a share house (or just live in a share house)

It's more that I can't leave my current friend group, and I dislike all of them. I'm in my finals years of school, and I'm stuck with friends I made when I was desperate.

I can't leave, there's nobody else to go to, and they wouldn't leave me alone if one day I just got up and tried to leave.

I hate most of them so much though

hang out with them less and less, then. Eventually 'breaking up' becomes easy because you barely see them anymore. Plus, it's pretty easy to just go hang out with other people in the ways I mentioned without leaving a friends group

I don't want to keep coming up with excuses for your advice, but I just don't know I'd do that realistically as we share classes (which are very small), and all other friend groups are closed off at this stage of life.

I'll just say that it seems logical to me, and in line with the idea that pulling and pressing in multiple directions will keep the shoulders healthier compared to only e.g. bench and pullups would.

This was also the reason Avon considered dropping GHRs in favour of hip extension exercises too, way back when. His rationale was that it would help his powerlifts more. Don't know what he eventually did, tho.

These numbers are coming off the top of my head, but from what I recall the main differences are the sumo engages 30% less spinal erectors and 15% more quads.
The rest is pretty much the same.

To the best of my knowledge, isometric training does very little for strength and hypertrophy. I have a pic about isometric holds and how they transfer to strength in that position, but not on this computer, and it's not really the isometric you're talking about, I guess.
Overthinking it kinda. I really doubt you'll notice a difference, and if the rest of your leg, core and back work is smart you shouldn't worry about it, imho. Use whatever technique you are better at.
