The blacks were already enslaved. Largely by their "kin" (more often than not some enemy tribe/kangdom that conquered your village) or Arabs and Berbers. Other peoples just bought them.

They still do, there is still ton of slavery in most of Africa, Mauritania, a half-negro berber rape-baby nation is still enslaving negros, except North Africans (and later Arabs) had the good sense of castrating them, and hunting for more rather than letting them breed, Europeans couldn't because of the cost of traveling between the old and the new world.
