If the 9/11 plane hijackers were able to hit the trade center and the Pentagon, is there any reason they wouldn't have been able to hit the White House, or any other structure in America? If their goal was maximum destruction/maximum lives lost/maximum dollars lost what would have been the best targets for them?

They were aiming for the White House thr plane just crashed. Honestly they should've hit the statue of liberty to send a message.

Killing maybe a few dozen tourists and knocking down a big copper statue vs. destroying the older presidential mansion and possibly taking out numerous high-ranking government officials. White House was objectively a better target.

If you've ever flown over DC, you'd know how hard it is to spot any monuments. If you're not properly oriented and very stressed (like the hijackers likely were), picking out any specific building among the DC skyline is going to be tough.

So for these hijackers, they likely just picked the biggest obvious government building they could find and went for that - in this case, the Pentagon.

There was a plane doing just that, but the passengers fought back and ended up making them crash in a field
