I see two paths:

1. Go the China route. Progressively liberalize the economy while keeping a tight leash on political freedoms. Direct the KGB to steal as much Western technology as possible. Mantain arms and nuclear parity. Don't invade Afghanistan, don't dismantle the Warsaw Pact, don't withdraw from Germany or Eastern Europe. Encourage Russians to breed with government programs. Ban alcohol. Build a Russian internet completely separate from the world wide network so that outside ideas cannot penetrate. Focus on beating the West at their own capitalist game. You don't have unions, you can pay your workers peanuts and the capitalists will be thrilled to invest and reap massive profits. They will sell you the rope you will hang them with, as Lenin predicted.

2. Go the North Korea route. Spend 25% of the GDP on the military. Fuck living standards. Mantain a brutal Stalinist cult and prepare for a winnable nuclear war. Build massive bunkers like that of Yamantau and Kosvinsky Mountain all across Russia. Hide your real nuclear arsenal inside an underground network of tunnels and silos, like China does with the Underground Great Wall. Don't sign START or any other arms reduction treaty. When you have enough capacity to keep at least a fourth of the Russian population underground, strike hard and true. March across Western Europe with NBC troops and take over the world. The West's greatest flaw during the Cold War was M.A.D. theory - They saw nuclear war as unwinnable. When in fact you can fight and prevail in a nuclear apocalypse if you are prepared to go all the way. The Russians understood this in their exercises, but never put it in practice.

Basically, avoid the middle ground the USSR took. Sitting on your ass and waiting behind a command economy just means the capitalists are going to beat you at some point.
