Being hydrated helps a lot in preventing it, but it doesn't guarantee that you will be spared. It's like dissolving NaCl or sugar in water, if you remember them old chemistry books. The more water there is the more sugar is needed to form a precipitate.

Below that threshold any protein not used to replace and repair protein in your body is turned into either fat (for storage) or made into glucose for fuel. I think sometimes protein can go un-absorbed and go into the poo, but I'm not sure about that last bit.

If you have fucked up kidneys: not good.
If you have healthy kidneys: you really have to overdo it by a large margin and for a long time to get any serious effects (mostly kidney stones.)
