This exercise is not bad, but you shouldn't try to load max weights and attempt to press for few inches. Egoistical faggots do this.
Do squats (or at least smith machine squat) instead if you want to do a max rep. They are similar to leg press but use significantly less weights.

Because of the angle the sled is held at. It'd be damn near impossible to make a leg press machine that doesn't carry most of the load for you

the whole point of leg press is that it's simple enough to just rep out close to failure and not worry about being snapped up

The whole point of a leg press is to be able to get high rep (minimum 8-20 reps) and get a deep as fuck stretch, burn and pump on your legs, something that you can't really get with a squat without form breaking down completely.
I never go above 5 plates on the leg press and stay over 15 rep range, I have 24 inch quads at 5'7.

I can't really do the leg press anymore because I get this strange pain in my left ribcage. Looked it up and it's apparently common, a small muscle or something attached to the ribcage that literally rips off. Luckily my shit was just sore and not that far gone so fuck this shit.
