If you have to ask that question, you probably already have a mental illness.

How many bepis did you suck?

Drug abuse and extreme stress can cause things like psychosis.

If you mean something like autism, no. That's genetic.

If by catch you mean contagious, then sure. If people that are close to you are suffering, you are apt to feel some of the same pain.

Unless you're an autist, then social related matters won't apply.

>autism is a mental disease

user, I

I assume you mean if you're around a crazy person for a while and notice their weird ass shit they do on a daily basis, and whether or not you could start taking after them subconsciously? No, you can't do that. At the worst, you'd have to go to a therapist for a week and talk it all out, but that'd be about it. It can traumatize you if they scare you, but you can't like inherit their mental problem by being in contact with them. People are way, way too complicated for it to be that easy. Mental illness arises from loads of different things, not just interacting with some crazy person. Everyone is wired differently, and people who become mentally ill typically had some extreme trauma, mostly physical, and just never got help from it, and did a lot of drugs while they were a teenager, which then fucked them up even more. You will 99% always see severe brain trauma and heavy drug use with mentally ill people, both occurring chronically at young ages while their brains were developing. We're talking like diagnosed schizophrenics and bipolar people, not robots and their """"""mental illnesses"""""". This is why mentally ill people are typically a lost cause though. Their brains are just wired in a fucked up way and there really isn't anything anyone can do about it. It's just how they developed, and this is why people are typically who they will be for their entire life by like 16 years old, personality-wise.

This is a big problem for kids who have to live with wackjobs because they are family members and have nowhere else to go. Typically you will go to a few therapy sessions and that's all it takes. Very rarely is the trauma from dealing with those experiences is so severe that it requires anything more.

Yes.

Most mental illnesses are sexually transmitted by your parents. They fucked, and you caught the retardation.

Although most of these posts are right (you can't) some studies have shown that being around people with mental illnesses such as depression can lead to you also feeling less happy. As well as this you adopt the habits of your company so if you only hang out with people who lead poor lifestyles you may end up also leading a poor lifestyle which would lead to an overall lower level of happiness. I'm not an expert on the subject though so take this with a grain of salt.

traumatizing experiences dealing with crazy people != being crazy

yes, you can catch mental illnesses. stay on Veeky Forums for a while and you will know what i mean

I mean, it's certainly possible to be around someone who has a mental illness themselves long enough for it to impact the way YOU think

Was with a bipolar chiq in college, bitch made me nuts

had to stay in the same house as my schizo sister for like 4 years. felt like i was in a fucking insane asylum by the end of it. after leaving for school though, i was totally fine. after you leave, you don't even think about it. you're just happy as fuck to finally be away from it. desu it made me a better person because i appreciate being around other normal people a lot more than i would have if i didn't go through dealing with them. i fucking hate crazy people. they're so annoying and degenerate. i don't sympathize with them one bit.

If you go to an American socialist grooming -- er I mean university there's a strong chance you'll contract liberalism, so yes.

stick around a little longer and you'll find out

There are diseases that you can catch that can damage your brain such as neurosyphilis.

Fact.

not sure

but I know for a fact that browsing Veeky Forums (especially r9k) makes you less happy

On Veeky Forums you can

People share ideas why not shitty ideas.

no. the closest thing to that is becoming sad because your friend is a depressed faggot and ruined your day with some sad shit. you can't become schizo because you're around a schizo person or something. that's ridiculous.

No you don't motherfucker If you ask that question you are curious of the human mind. Just because you want to know about something doesn't mean you embody that thing. Forensic scientists don't kill people, they study them. You cunt.

>t. M.S in neurology
Can you tell me the damage that basically daily porn, fapping, gaming, internet and weed does to someone 15-18?

nothing wrong with playing videogames for a moderate amount of time. the internet isn't very good unless your home life is negative. porn is bad and nobody should use it. fapping once every couple of days is perfectly fine. weed is pretty bad and I wouldn't encourage it to anyone until 18+.

No dude.
I played league of legends for 8-16 hours a day from 12 to 16, also fapped almost daily between that time.
I also smoked weed daily from 16 to 18, when i was 17 it was multiple joints.
I want to know about my specifically if i fucked my pre frontal cortex up or my dopamine receptors and there is no saving

Well I started visiting this board and now I'm gay. So yeah

I don't know I was just roleplaying while my mom cooked chicken tendies

kek
post pic of your tendies
tell ur mom ur brazillian internet friend told her hello

Yes

t. The autist

i ruined my english class of 15 people by ignoring all of them and at the same time being such a shameful autist, damn its like they become other persons when theyre in there, with me

no, but you can prevent one by taking fish oil, doing daily aerobic exercise like 30 minutes of jogging, staying away from mentally ill people, going to cognitive therapy, and taking an anti-depressant. If you do all of those things, you'll literally never get a mental illness. It will be practically impossible.

I never had a problem peeing in public until I learned that it was a thing and now I have trouble peeing in public so I'd say yes.

chris-chan was definitely made worse by his mom's actions
she treated him like a child even to the point of assaulting an officer to defend him

could there actually be something wrong with robots, though?
even if it's not a super serious mental illness, surely their mindset is mentally ill on its own

they're just degenerates. lazy people that isolate themselves and make themselves nuts out of their own stupidity. there is nothing clinically significant about them.

Is having the feeling of constant doom and anxiety an mental ilness?, other than that, i feel pretty good

Idk man how strong are you?

sort of, yes.

Yes, they're called mass movements (not that kind of mass movement you fucking ape), read Eric Hoffer's work.

Say some nice things to me to cheer me up

It is, there is help to get

You can catch racism which is a proven mental illness. Causes delusions

you can easily fix it. our brains are malleable. do , ans make good friends that you talk to daily. even people that are off the deep end and have serious mental problems can recover from it if they just acknowledge that they have a problem and do something about it.

Not sure, but i sure have body dysmorphia from being on fit so long

I dont want to be depended on drugs and i was in a discord group for 1 year with bunch of /b/ and /r9k/ fags, recently left them and feel a bit better. Lifting weights only keeps me together.

mental illness, no
behavioral disorder, absolutely

mentally ill people tend to also have behavioral disorders as well, you might have 'caught' one of those and be conflating the two.

t. PhD in Women's Art History

You're extremely susceptible to ideologies and depend upon outside signifiers to either form a new identity for yourself or to blur the lines of an intolerable identity. Stick with weightlifting, self-improvement will help you to develop enough self-confidence and actualization to the point where you won't be so easily duped into mass movements.

cognitive therapy has shown to be equivalent to an anti-depressant. do aerobics. lifting isn't the same. anaerobic exercise has none of the cognitive benefits of aerobics. just 30 minutes of jogging every day

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neurobiological_effects_of_physical_exercise

do it.

No, you were retarded the moment you were born.

Yeah, if you read enough depressing shit and listen to enough depressing tunes you can sorta trick yourself into thinking you're depressed, which eventually turns into the real thing. You get addicted to being melancholy all the time and you enjoy it at first, until it becomes hard to stop.
It happened to me lol

same thing happened to me, was watching some tv show and a character couldn't pee at a urinal which caused me to start taking like 30 seconds to start peeing at urinals.

then, i imagined peeing on the face of the girl i liked and now it only takes me like 5-10 seconds to start peeing

This. Aswell as if you live with an insane person many of their bad habits can rub off on you if you are not extremely diligent.

why do i idolise madness? theres a part of me that wants to have a breakdown and go off the deep end

reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

that's because you're a sheltered moron that romanticizes terrible things. someone that has actually dealt with something like that would slap you across the face for saying something so stupid. don't say stupid shit like that anymore, especially IRL.

>he doesn't fantasize about dead people

Its irresponsible to assume that living with other people who have significant mental health problems has no detremental effects. Naturally people emulate their enviornments. So much so that you will start to look like someone if you spend enough time with them. Obviously you cant catch a missing chromosome but thinking a few therapy sesions is all it takes to weed out the psycho is off the mark. The real cure is just time away from crazy people and time with normal health ones.

its not some childish 'haha wouldnt that be cool' thing. it just feels, to a part of me, that it would make my life easier if i didnt have to put up the pretence of being fine

That's what I said, though. At the most, even the most traumatized people who had to deal with nutjobs only have to see a few therapy sessions before they can put all of it behind them and move on with their life. Crazy people are crazy, and our brains are capable of filtering their craziness into the "don't take this seriously" bin of irrationality. make some friends who are good, normal, positive and supportive people, and get away from the crazy person as soon as you possibly can, and you'll be fine. if not, then just go to a therapy session or two and that will do the trick. I'm taking this literally, what the OP is saying. No, you can't catch someones craziness like it's a disease or a way of thinking or something. Your brain either developed incorrectly or it didn't. There are a lot of marks you have to hit to be a candidate for a serious mental illness. It's like cancer. Everyone is worried about it, but in reality it's not that easy to get.

Hell, I dealt with a crazy family member growing up, and I was totally fine after I got away from them. By that time though, I was 22 years old, so already finished developing anything relevant for years before, so none of it really effected me, but was just another annoyance to my day. Getting away from it was such a relief though, holy shit.

>You're extremely susceptible to ideologies and depend upon outside signifiers to either form a new identity for yourself

What the hell.. it's like you read my memory. Most of the time i feel depersonalised and everything around me feels like an movie, what do you consider self improvements, like making friends etc? It's not easy you know.. and how did you know i waa really sensetive to other ideologies and opinions of others?

Im currently 18 living with my mom who isnt exactly mentally stable. She lets me smoke pot which sounds awesome but i abused the fuck out of it and even though ive cut back im still trying to kick it. I still get anxiety and feelings of dread over shit that before i lived with her i wouldnt blink at. Ive seen a few therapists and they havent done anything monumental. Its reasurring to know that you felt better after you left. Im thinking about joining the military. Maybe a good way to reinstill some discipline i lost and get me out of the house. As well as a gull time job

Thank you for the information, is it ok to run after the day i did legday? I have a rest day then.

>how did you know i waa really sensetive to other ideologies and opinions of others?
Human behavior with regard to certain group dynamics is actually extremely repetitive and universal. Everyone is susceptible to varying degrees to certain principles and ideologies. Their outward details are really less meaningful than their structural details, in other words, a nazi and a commie have basically the same psychology even if they claim to be on opposite ends of the spectrum. I use these only as examples, however. All mass groups, whether they are political, religious, even humorous in nature depend upon the same basic principle of recruitment: That of self-destruction and submission to a larger whole, a big other.

All members of mass groups and mass movements are members precisely to engage in a form of self-destruction. They are fundamentally unhappy with themselves when not members of these kinds of groups, and join them because they want to become members of a great mass into which all their efforts can be bent, so that their lives will feel purposeful and meaningful and they will at last be fulfilled. This is not me insulting you personally, as the vast majority of the members of this site and indeed all of the chans are susceptible in the extreme to this. I'll post a quote in just a moment to show why.

Above all, user, I recommend that you do everything within your power to avoid boredom. Boredom will kill you dead, just the way being fat will kill you dead. Boredom is mental obesity and it makes you very open to depersonalization and identification not with yourself but with the idea of a collective or ideology, which will perpetuate misery in your life so long as you let it.

From Eric Hoffer's excellent book, "The True Believer,"

"When people are bored, it is primarily with their own selves that they are bored. The consciousness of a barren, meaningless existence is the main fountainhead of boredom. People who are not conscious of their individual separateness, as is the case with those who are members of a compact tribe, church, party, etcetera, are not accessible to boredom. The di#erentiated individual is free of boredom only when he is engaged either in creative work or some absorbing occupation or when he is wholly engrossed in the struggle for existence. Pleasure-chasing and dissipation are ine#ective palliatives. Where people live autonomous lives and are not badly o#, yet are without abilities or opportunities for creative work or useful action, there is no telling to what desperate and fantastic shifts they might resort in order to give meaning and purpose to their lives."

In short, user, if you want out, if you want to live free from the follower mindset that leads men to do awful and stupid things, that leads to suffering, self-cultivation is utterly crucial. As much as possible, be willing to make an honest assessment of yourself, and then, even more importantly, honestly accept yourself. I emphasize acceptance, not contentment. I accept that I don't have the body I want, I accept I have work to do, I am not content with it but I am content with the work I have set before me. This way I avoid boredom and have self-improvement as the focal point around which my life revolves, which has immensely improved myself and my relationships.

Holy shit, this was a great read user. Thank you for the effort! Especially in the weekends i have literally nothing to do, i can't see myself going to the club with friends or doing that social stuff. I mean yea i could read books for self improvement too keep me busy, but that would still keep me feeling the same way as if i played vidya or anything else. How did you overcome boredom?

I mean.. this may sound stupid but most of the time i imagine myself in an boxing ring winning the championship and doing that kinds of stuff, i used to be on kickboxing for few years when in was a 12-13 yo kid. But i feel like going towards that direction would feel like an timewaste of the time i but into weightlifting. I really want to avoid anime and vidya but it's so hard for me, in the end it keeps me scraching my head thinking what else to do.

not the psychanon (wonderful advice there, fucking screencapped), just have to add that if you ever feel bored, try expanding your own skillset. Learn a language or a craft, try to deepen your understanding of things related to what you either do for a living or enjoy.

A mind hellbent on improving itself each and every passing day has no time to waste on tribalistic bullshit that relies on feeling better than an outgroup for shallow reasons. Good luck user.

That kinda cleared things up for me, thank you user!

many such cases!

You can get it from a untreated virus infection, syphilis pshycosis

HAES seems to be transmittable I'm not even jocking

You can be genetically predisposed to mental illness under certain environments.

Wtf men like doing this?

Abso-fucking-lutely

All those emo faggot kids who cut themselves and post that shit to facebook in a cry for attention.

That shit didn't exist back in my day.

Only legit fucked up "I'm seeing the devil in my pizza" people would do that.

Nowadays it's perfectly fucking common for some angsty little twat be a 'cutter'.

Fucking fads, man.

Only if your flex a 'cep and you are not autistic

>How did you overcome boredom?
Ironically I think I overcame boredom by being nearly jobless for nearly two years after college. It's only just now starting to lift thanks to better habits. To me at a certain point I realized it was seriously just the same shit all the time and I was starting to slide into mental habits I was immediately ashamed of and displeased by, for example, expending considerable amounts of mental time and energy thinking obsessively about people I disliked, or situations I disliked, etc etc even though deep down it was a dislike of myself that I was trying to avoid. It made any task practically unbearable in ways tasks hadn't been in years. I got considerably fatter even than I was, and I've been fat almost my whole life.

In a certain sense, then, for me I had to become so bored with everything that it became a truly overwhelming problem before I was willing to face it. It's still an ongoing process. Overcoming boredom to me isn't a matter of momentarily finding something which seems to hold meaning but a process of seeing what on its own merits will bring me the most satisfaction, rather than the extremely familiar feeling of a temporary distraction covering up an internal guilt over my own inactivity and clinical procrastination.

It is very easy to be distracted because so much distraction is available, but it seems harder to be satisfied. I am still surprised at how immediate the benefits of working out have been, mentally speaking. Satisfaction is pound for pound a much more addicting mental state than distraction even if it is in shorter supply.

>A mind hellbent on improving itself each and every passing day has no time to waste on tribalistic bullshit that relies on feeling better than an outgroup for shallow reasons. Good luck user.
Excellent advice!

PS my Captcha: "Weight Limit 10 Tons." Deep.

Continuing since I'm a chatty motherfucker.

>i can't see myself going to the club with friends or doing that social stuff.
Studies show it is health-wise actually very important to maintain face-to-face contact with at least some people on at least some kind of regular basis, even if you're just acquaintances. Everyone has to start somewhere. It certainly doesn't have to involve clubbing if you don't want it to, though. That may impress college kids but if it doesn't impress your deep, internal self then it's completely worthless, really it is.

>I mean.. this may sound stupid
See, that right there is the shit you need to stop. No offense but seriously, all of us are just random jackoffs to you and to ourselves. The negative opinions about you that some random dipshit on the internet may hold are never going to be based on substance and will never say anything about you. They spend infinitely more time thinking of themselves than you. Plus, even if it was meaningful or accurate... who cares? What are they going to do about it? The only person you will ever be truly accountable to is yourself, that's cliche but it remains as true as ever. You will only ever experience things as yourself, and as nebulous a concept as the self is, experience is the common thread.

In short, if you think it's a stupid waste of your time, fair enough, but I don't think you really think that or else you wouldn't be telling me about your hopes and dreams. I don't think you think it's a stupid waste of your time, I think it's something you would enjoy and get better at. Comparison with others is I think a rather pointless endeavor for an individual but if you compare yourself with yourself, I think you will instantly find your boredom replaced with a sense of real improvement, worth, and power. That in itself will make everyone either extremely jealous of you if they're bored/ing people or extremely attracted to you if they're worth your time.

Alzheimer's Disease CAN be transmitted under certain conditions.

It can also be caused by aluminum poisoning

That and just about any prion disease. Or something that could turn into encephalitis. Pretty much any disease that can cross the blood-brain barrier could become mental.

t. the schizo

Absolutely. It comes from environmental pressures, how "bubbled" you are with the mental illness stimuli, and how people react to you. Humans are not crazy-proof, our minds are generally weak.

>our minds are generally weak
speak for yourself, pussy brained faggot.

Anyone trained in torture and psychological manipulation would wreck you. Your mind would fall apart, internet tough guy.

Yeah. Not to mention they would have access to psychedelics so strong they make acid feel like shake weed

No, he's right, even if he phrased it poorly. There is no real metric for sanity. There's extremely common sense and practical logic but beyond that, mental illness as such is a sliding scale and depends on a huge number of factors. You are as much a result of the context around you as you are a result of your biology. That doesn't mean you are a slave to circumstance necessarily but it does mean that you do--and think--everything in context.

Behavioral disorders like addiction, depression, anxiety, ocd, ptsd, agoraphobia, ect, yes you can get these at any point in life given the right circumstances.

Personality or intellectual disorders like autism, personality disorders, bi-polar, borderline, antisocial personality disorder, schizophrenia, ect, no you need to develop these starting in childhood/adolescence or inherit them genetically.

/thread

Being raised by bi-polar or narcissist ic parenta can cause their children to develop those disorders. For the most part no you can't get mental disorders from being around them, but in a few cases you can by being raised by people who have them. Of course therw may also be the genetic factor of inheritance there as well.

That's because they are still developing. If you're like 16+, you're not developing something just from being around it. You'll only be traumatized.

Robots, serious ones may be a result of depression combined with schizoid or schizotypical disorders. A lot of them are fuck ups, but the fact that so many of them hate how dysfunctional they are and want to change is a sign of something wrong. A lot of psychologists will say that there is no normal per se with which all people can be held to. But there definitely is a spectrum of normalcy which we all fall on. Those falling into the extremes and outside of normalcy usually have something wrong with them that makes them unable to live a somewhat regular life.

Just lurk this website and find out

Ayyyyyy

I developed an extreme sense of anxiety and looming doom when I was forced away from my parents at 16. Ever since that godawful day I haven't been able to talk to people without a humiliating feeling of shame and anxiety. So I think so, yes.

are you me man ? but im 23

SAD!

You need to be around intelligent, positive people. I would not join the military for that at all. You will be with wackaloonies that didn't get filtered. Go to community college, do something good. Meet some intelligent, positive people and be social. Don't stay cooked up in your room. Read books. Jog 30 minutes every day. Maybe take a fish oil supplement. It is easy to come back from wherever shitty spot you are as long as you aren't already gone, and you obviously aren't gone. It's just a shitty situation you need to get away from. Stop doing drugs, including alcohol, if going to a loony bin is something you're worried about. It does you absolutely no favors.
