No, you can buy a topical at the pharmacy. You apply that like nailpolish. If you have thick nails already, you need to file them down as much as possible first, but that shouldn't be necessary if it's not that bad yet.

Pills are supposed to be more effective, but you need a prescription for those. She actually tried the stuff before and it didn't work, but she had had it for years at that point and her nails were already REALLY thick and nasty.
