I want to get Veeky Forums essentially and downloaded one of those apps that counts calories, but I'm having trouble because it says losing weight would make me underweight but I am not happy with my current weight. Currently I am 5'0 ft and 110 lbs. I don't exercise and want to learn what I should be doing so I can become slim and feel good about my body. I'm going to get a gym membership and get my diet on track. Do you guys have any idea on how to start getting into this?

Okay well I just read the sticky and according to it, starvation is bad right? The calories app says that I need to maintain 1000 calories a day in order to be the weight that I want. That's too little to function right? Even being 110 lbs and 5'0.

Assuming you're not currently doing intense cardio, you should be eating no less than 1121 calories and no more than 1261 to lose weight.

Eh, I used to do cycling every weekend and my legs looked like they grew rocks. It was pretty gross, so I was hoping there was a way I could get Veeky Forums without that happening.

Sites like myfitnesspal already calculate in the rate at which you burn calories at rest in their projections so that might be fine.

What weight do you want to be though user multiple people already told you your weight isn't the issue. It's your bodyfat percentage.

Not them, but cycling tends to do that to quads. Barbell training generally won't do that unless you squat like all the fucking time. It'll be more balanced and, unless you roid, you won't get bulky. The muscle mass you grow, in addition to leanness, will get you "toned".

MyFitnessPal is nice for tracking, but it's notorious for low calorie calculations. Not so good since it usually leads to losing muscle mass instead of just body fat - fucks up the metabolism and doesn't look good either.

Don't worry about what the app says.

Set yourself for a moderate amount of caloric intake per day. I would recommend either going maintenance or below.

1200-1400 calories per day. Start doing a strength routine as well. Don't worry about lifting weights or any fancy equipment.

KISS - Keep It Simple Stupid, look up upper body and lower body excercises with body weight only.

Start out with say 3-4 days a week where you do an upper body set of exercises and a lower body.

Once a week, say Monday morning, before eating and preferably after taking a poo poo. Weight yourself and record it.

Every week, same time, same conditions monitor your weight.

Also keep progress shots of your body to visually gauge your progress.

Ugh I always knew my spine looked weird. When I was in jr high, one of the teachers told me I had scoliosis. Since I'm 25, there's nothing I can do about this right?

Reading up on what you're supposed to be doing for proper posture and practicing can help. Just remember you should still feel comfortable while doing it, if you don't then you're doing something wrong.

I fixed mine at 23. Having good posture does a lot for your appearance.

Always remember that as you change your eating habits, incorporate an exercise routine and as your body changes the calories your body require will also change.

1200-1400 is what I recommend as a starting point. After 3 weigh ins as I mentioned earlier you need to re assess and adjust your calorie intake.

So at week 3 if you've lost weight on the scale then don't change anything and continue with the same caloric deficit.

Only when your progress stalls. So after a month or two you stop loosing weight then you need to do two things:

1. Increase exercise (if you don't want to cut calories)
2. Cut calories
3. Do both, increase energy expenditure and reduce caloric intake.

It's not your weight it's your shape. You don't need to diet you need to build muscle. Also roll your shoulders back. Practice good posture and always try to be conscious about it till it becomes natural.

I hope adding a personalized response would help the person move towards their goals.

I've had some times in my past where an user helped me in a situation of need.

With the internet at my fingertips and past experiences I knew the answer to my own problem.

Although the will to act came from the within the anons input was just the nudge I needed in the right direction.

The sticky is there for a reason, first of all.

Second of all, your posture is terrible. You need to work on stretching out your back and shoulders, building core strength, and focus every day on not standing like that. Shoulders back. You aren't doing your breasts any favors standing that way.


Lifting weights will not give you huge, bulky muscles because you are a woman.

Also Sarah Michelle Gellar was underweight during the filming of Buffy and suffered many repetitive motion injuries on set, as well as injuries from doing stunts without proper muscle development. She now does pt and a lot of Pilates and core work in addition to weight lifting because she needed desperately to build muscle and rehab her injuries from doing all that stuff while underweight and without a lot of muscle.


What will make you look good is doing weight lifting, read the sticky and start a program that includes compound lifts and accessory lifts for any areas you want to specifically build and target. Cardio is also important.

That's a reasonable amount of calories for an inactive 5' person trying to lose weight. Women hardly need any calories. 1500 is average maintenance for a 5'2"-5'5" women leading a semi-inactive lifestyle.

If you can afford it, it is worth it to get a trainer to start out for the first couple of months of lifting so you can get your form right and not waste a bunch of time doing dumb stuff at the gym. The main thing is just lift.
