It depends. Studies show that stretching before any activity decreases levels of performance.

With that in mind, if you need to be able to have a certain ROM to perform a certain task, you should stretch to that level.
EX: Sprinter can't run with proper form if he doesn't increase his ROM from stretching prior to the run (Temporary ROM not plastic ROM).
The obvious answer would be to stretch, even though if he already had the desired ROM he would be able to perform better without stretching.

That's just my opinion, and what research says.

Ok so here's the real answer, just ignore the fucking talentchads and dyels here who give bad advice and don't practice what they preach. I can front split, middle split and pancake pretty comfy and I didn't use Veeky Forums shit advice at all.

Firstly, you should diagnose problem areas, it can be done with various tests if you google them but also practice the movement itself and identify problem areas, stretching does not help without an aim.

The solution is different for every individual but it's always best to try to warm up/stretch with movements similar to those you are performing. Eg. For squats, try squatting down and pushing knees out, Spider-Man lunge etc, various goblet squat and overhead squat drills since mobility is primarily a neural quality.

A little static stretching is fine if you find that it helps you get into better positions, people completely blow this out of proportion as being terrible.

Pro-tip: Elite weightlifters static stretch before a workout to allow them to get into better positions with less internal resistance (but user who squats 3pl8 after reading SS tells you not to).

At the end of the day, the quality of movement matters much more than the weight lifted for the sake of 2kg less on a lift.

Stretch longer after lifting if you'd like, static and dynamic, again with movements similar to those you use, however you can target areas specifically. E.g. Frog stretch is a great hip opener that transfers well to squatting but it's probably better suited to after a workout due to less specificity.

Do isometric and PNF.
