That is one way to put it. Another, way would be to say they reclaimed Polish land stolen by Germany during the Third Partition of Poland; land which, in spite of more than a century of cultural suppression and colonization, still held a Polish majority.

The British and the French got into it because they didn't like the Nazis imperialistic expansion into central European countries like Czechoslovakia and Poland and later eastern European countries like the USSR. That caused them to declare war on Germany. Even later on the British could have made peace with the Germans such as with the Rudolf Hess peace offering, but they were unwilling to make a separate peace with the Germans well they invaded the USSR.

The United States got into the war because they didn't agree with Japan's imperialistic expansion into China. This caused them to embargo them and to support the forces of Chiang Kai-shek which led to hostilities with Japan. The negotations with the Japanese, continuing as late as the Hull note demanded that they withdraw from China in order to improve relations between them.

Basically then, France, Britain, and the United States joined the war because they were unwilling to sit back and let the aggressive expansionist states like Germany and Japan take over China and Russia. The war wasn't forced on them, but they joined because they were unwilling to accept these aggressions. In this sense, the conflict was between aggressive imperialistic state and non-aggressive ones that emerged in the aftermath of the great depression.

6. Hitler decides to invade Poland instead and luckily for him he finds a new partner in his former target - USSR. At least for a while.

The political reason for why they started the war was because of the economy of Nazi Germany, and how it basically required a state of total war and military expansionism to keep from collapsing.

Italy
Similar reasons as to Germany, with regards to the economy. Other than that it was primarily Mussolini's autism that made them join the war, and his retarded lust for a new Roman Empire.

Japan
Japan wanted the resources of Pacific island nations, as well as China.
There primary reason for attacking the USA was so that they could deal a blow so heavy to the US that they'd not be able to defeat Japan, which was retarded in hind-sight but it was what the admirals believed. For whatever reason.

France and the UK
They simply wanted to keep the status quo in Europe, there is no other primary reason as to why they joined the war.

USSR
They wanted to extend their influence into the nations of Eastern Europe, at least before OP. Barborosa, which it then became a defensive war.

USA
Simply defense, at least the parts of active fighting.
The lend-lease was primarily because America was a long-time ally of France and the UK. And those nations coming on top of Germany, and not being conquered, was directly in America's interests as a nation.

Most other nations were either defensive, or joined because of previous alliances.

As for why the war started, it was because Hitler upset the status-quo in Europe, by invading Poland, and to a lesser extent Japan by invading China. Thus setting the world on a course for a war without equal.
