And you know what you'd do? Absolutely nothing. You'd hear his advice and discard it, because it's too much and too hard.

Peterson's approach is a baby steps method. You might only end up cleaning your room everyday, but at the end of the day that's far better than where you were before.

Your advice definitely helps, but the proportion of people who would choose to do that over just cleaning your room is 1/10000 at best.

By doing little things like cleaning your room, you're accepting responsibility for the cleanliness of that room, you're instilling meaning (however small) into your life. You then add more and more responsibility as the days go on, and soon your life will be full of meaning. You'll recognize the pattern and use it to succeed through life.

You cannot force a person to completely change their lives when it's dependent on an escape (video games, drugs etc) for meaning, first you need to replace their fictional sense of meaning with one in the real world. Show them that meaning is a real, and obtainable thing. Then you can tell them to sell their computer, because they won't extract their life's meaning from it, then you can tell them to climb a mountain and get in a fist fight, because there's meaning to be found in suffering and overcoming adversity.
