On what historical basis did Tom Clancy think that Russia would be more closely aligned with American interests than China when he wrote this book, when in fact the exact opposite has come to be true?

Russia was America's bitch in the 1990s (with the exception of the Kosovo War) and China was rapidly rising economically. Earlier Clancy novels had the even sillier idea of Japan becoming a US adversary, which speaks to the idea that he was just paranoid about Asia.

Because Russia and America are bother culturally European I suppose, also the early 90's was when Russia was at its lowest point since 1917 wherease China was going places

this. The two books before The Bear and The Dragon have Japan attacking America and then Iran invading and conquering Iraq after assassinating Saddam

also a butthurt Jap kills the entire US government

Yes, that's just so he can get his self-insert to become President

although fun to read at the peak of the empire, bootlicker tom's doorstoppers have not aged well.
best pentagon propaganda since newsreels, though; now replaced by video games.

>Russia
>friends with China
All of my kek. Yes Russia would be way more sympathetic to America if Americans weren't constantly pestering them and treating them like the ultimate boogeyman. USA and Russia were the best of friends before the commie revolution.

Most of major video games still portray Russians as big enemy of America, hardly Chinese. So game companies probably did not get the news who new enemy is.

Pretty much this.

American media in general is treating Putin like he's Hitler. I'm not the biggest Putin fan but the shill campaign o American MSM is disgusting.

Chinks are small, ugly and retarded, won't sell.

Tom Clancy once replied to a post of mine on Usenet.

I've read one book by Tom Clancy and I hardly could finish it because of the cringy USA muh freedom propaganda.

>On what historical basis did Tom Clancy think that Russia would be more closely aligned with American interests than China

He didn't realize just how much Wall Street would whore America out to the Chinese and try to overthrow Russia and force it into the EU.

Tom Clancy videogames (Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell), which he ironically was not involved in developoing in any way, are seriously much better than Tom Clancy books.
I remember playing the first Ghost Recon (2001) and the plot was about Ossetian insurgents acting as Russian stooges and completely breaking away from Georgia, Georgians chimping out and trying to destroy them, and then Russian military entering Ossetia and BTFOing the Georgians. Then this exact scenario happened in 2008.

Ludlum > Clancy for boilerplate airport thrillers

many authors thought that would happen, Starship Troopers had the anglo-american-russo alliance against the chinese hegemony

So if Russia's the Bear, China's the Dragon, and America's the Eagle, what does that make Britain, France, Israel, India, Pakistan, etc?

Britain - Bulldog
France - Rooster/Cock (heh)
Israel - Cockroach

Probably because most major video game developers would hurt more from a Chinese ban than a Russian one. It's pretty obvious that Crysis was meant to have Chinese as the villains originally and was then quickly rewritten to have Norks instead.

Russia isn't bear, that's some Anglo retardation. Russian animal has always been the double headed eagle which is a Byzantine symbol.

>implying anybody buys fucking games in China

>American films/games where fucking Korea invades the US instead of China

All Murimutt videogames have either Russians, nazis or zombies as villains. Occassionally a muslim terrorist but that's considered uncool recently.

>it’s a russians crying about everything thread
Sensitive bitches

Sometimes you don't get to pick the animal that your country gets associated with. Also
>double headed eagle
>post 1917

>splinter cell 1-Georgia
>splinter cell 2-Indonesian terrorist
>Splintercell 3-rogue jap imperialist officers
>splinter cell 4-domestic terrorist group

This

Japan was the bad guy for half his books

Always was impressed how accurately he predicted that

I think it may be people are overthinking this, once the Cold War ended he had to come up with some sort of adversaries for the US in order to write his military techno-thrillers. I don't suppose it matters whether the scenarios were genuinely plausible.

One of them, user.

>also a butthurt Jap kills the entire US government
How is that even possible?

>USA and Russia were the best of friends before the commie revolution.
Hell it wasn't even that long ago (Bush administration) that we had "most favorable nation" status with them

He was an airline pilot and flew a plane into Congress while everyone was gathered to sign in a new VP, actually written before 9/11 so a little bit of an eery prediction.

A bear fits because it looks tough but you can frighten it away with loud enough noise.

They do, it's just that they're all bootlegs. It's a whole industry there, one of my favorite YTers has an entire series that's just playing bootleg Famicom games.

an airline pilot whose brother died on the last day of the war crashed a jumbo jet into the Capitol Building while they were swearing in Jack Ryan as the new VP. The crash and fire kills everyone except Jack and 2 department secretaries

Yeah but even during the State of the Union when EVERYONE is supposed to be there, there's always one house member not present as the designated Sole Survivor in case of like a nuke or something.

iirc there was a sole survivor but he didn't matter because the VP managed to survive

There were a small number of survivors, including the main character who had just become VP, it was basically a plot twist to turn the lead character into POTUS.

Back in the 80s they had the whole Japanese economic miracle, and the pearl harbor generation was still around and in power so it was credible, if a bit shortsighted to think they'd be the boogeyman again.

Steam's most used interface language is now Simplified Mandarin.

It's still ludicrous to imagine the JMSDF could have the strength to invade and occupy Guam, let alone fight the Pacific Fleet.

Eh, China has few petroleum sources, Siberia has plenty. Really not too far fetched to imagine that China has considered an invasion.

Tom Clancy also seems to have predicted the Trump presidency.

>an independently wealthy non-politician is elected by running as a right of center outsider presented as an "average guy", even though his background is far from average

>under his presidency the USA establishes a special close relationship with Russia, via his ex-KGB officer who has become the most powerful man in the Russian government

>he then starts a trade war with China by recognising Taiwan, storming out of trade talks, and getting everyone to boycott products made by baby murderers

>at home he throws out the entire US tax code, appoints his Wall Street friend to write a replacement, which eliminates all capital gains taxes and progressive bracketing in favor of a "fair" flat rate of tax for everybody

>his Supreme Court appointments are all chosen for being strict constructionalists who will overturn Roe v Wade for him

>at every step he is hounded by the media who demonize his every move

hopefully that means Iran will infect them with ebola soon

Jack Ryan is PhD historian with a background of working in academia as a professional historian and working as a high level intelligence analyst for the CIA.

The idea the character is "just like Trump" is ludicrous. Nor is he portrayed as having bigger problems with the press than any other president.

What are the best Tom Clancy books or works in any form of media that feature his name even if he didn't write them?

I suspect a lot of them have aged badly but for anyone interested in the Cold War and military stuff then Red Storm Rising is probably still a cracking read.

Many right-wing amerifats want to pretend Russia is a friend because muh white christian country

Red Storm Rising is top tier military fiction, and so is Rainbow Six
Debt of Honor, Executive Orders and The Bear and The Dragon are kind of wanky, but they're excellent if you don't mind that, especially Executive Orders
the Hunt For Red October is the best movie based on his works

>be Tom Clancy
>know so much about military technology that the FBI thinks you're a spy because you figured out the classified specs of a submarine just by making an educated guess
god I wish he was still alive

>one

Three

Really? I can only remember Debt of Honor, what are the other two?

China has the world’s largest reserve of unconventional oil and gas by a large margin. They also are the fourth largest producer of oil.

Their retarded mineral rights/publically owned land policy makes it difficult to extract if you are not a giant corporation though.

China has no reason to start a war with a nuclear power. She’ll just purchase it for far cheaper.

None of these things have happened and Jack Ryan is a literal genius compared to Trump.

>trade war
>recognizing Taiwan
>throws out entire US tax code
Over a year through and none has occurred. The tax code was written by the GOP and their corporate lobbyists. It is 82,000 pages long and has 7 tax brackets.

Tom Clancy probably didn't anticipate China becoming the world's second largest economy much more dependent on global trade in manufactured goods than Russia, or that they would mend ties with Russia so quickly, he was just writing what he remembered of them from the end of the Cold War. He also didn't anticipate that the end of communism in Russia would not in fact transform them into a successful liberal democracy allied to the US and NATO, or recognise that geography precludes Russia ever being friends with Western Europe.

He also couldn't conceive of communist country ever possibly being able to play the capitalist game better than America, he characterises the Chinese ministers as all flagrant idiots who don't understand how international trade agreements work and just somehow blundered into being the world's largest manufacturing center, and who still worship Mao and want world socialism.

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory is one of the GOAT stealth games and has alright writing for what it is.

Russia still plays with the US/EU because we're that close to each other.

China on the other hand has a completely different ideology. "Communism" is just a western dress over their long ambitious goal of becoming the sole superpower again.
