The sad reality is that almost no one will will achieve these bodies, not with steroids or years of work for a lot of these pictures posted. Someone responded saying OP is achievable in 3 years with light roids. lmao. good luck, try 10 years of intense training with at least 5 of roids. you still won't get close.

What was bodybuilding like in the 1920s and before? Was it an exceedingly rare thing?

Diff user, but basically before Sandow in the 1890's, the closest we had to modern lifting was circus performers / strongmen.
Picking people up, bending horse shoes, catching cannonballs, etc.
Pic related is the kind of thing Sandow was initially known for.

At some point Sandow went around measuring the proportions of Greco-Roman statues, and strived to have the same body. He's the first known person to build up his body to pre-determined measurements, and eventually was better known for his looks than his feats of strength.

He continued traveling, wrote some books, hosted some of the first physique-focused competitions, and the sport grew from there.
