I have really weird addiction cycles. Basically I'll get addicted to something new for a week, then never want to touch it again. Immune to mental addiction. I still get hit with physical "withdrawals" but I haven't met one I couldn't cold turkey. Basically if I make a rule I can follow it indefinitely.

Having been a weak-willed faggot (and very much aware I have the capacity to return to that hence discipline and motivation from now on) I can honestly say that a large part of it comes down to lacking personal responsibility and being unable at some point to realise that every action has a consequences.
Match that up with painful events in your life that lead to a need for escapism and yeah. Not a good combo.
I honestly think that teaching kids a healthy mindset and philosophy at an early age would help, but for that to happen we'd need to embrace those values entirely as a society, which sadly is never going to happen.
On the positive side, you can see it as a kind of darwinism. Those that get it early on are successful, those that fuck up and learn to control themselves can live healthy lives and the rest well, just breed. Okay, fuck the darwinism idea. Shit, society is fucked. Nvm.

I don't care to read whole thread, sorry. Just want to add my two cents, to give OP perspective: Addiction is more than willpower. Recent studies shows that there addiction is more of a psychological situation (i.e. being an outcast) than actual addictive effect of drugs. That being said - if you've never been addicted to anything in your life it probably means you are and have been in healthy social circle - I;m very glad for you because of that. Have a nice day!
