Chin-ups and pull-ups are actually great for abs

sounds like you are being jewed for gains.

i would rather say keep doing 5x5 and add in some chin ups after every workout as well as some band pull aparts in between every push set and band/cable facepulls after every other workout.

I can't do a full leg raise with my arms hanging from a pull up bar without moving my upper body. I also don't have an ab wheel.

Other things to build strength in the area to progress to proper leg raises?

Yes but you can't see them unless I suck in and flex as I keep a certain amount of body fat in order to get max gains from lifting.

I still don't understand why though. Obviously you have to contract the abs to keep your body in a favorable position as to not swing around and stay stationary but the load is 1. Isometric and 2. only body weight. How is it possible to have such high EMG stimulation results for the rectus abdominis on chinups and pullups?
