Despite a good amount of exhaustion among the civilian populace (principally, the soviets in moscow and petrograd, which were close to open rebellion and for which losing would be the end of the bolsheviks in the same way as their predecessors ended) the red army was still in high spirits by the end of the civil war.

An aggressive trotsky would just steamroll any hostile germany, desu. Weimar Germany relied on a nominally sympathetic USSR for them to hide their weapons development programs in, and as one of the only european trade partners left that didn't hate their guts.
