This. Hell if you just showed me a picture of the guy without telling me he's Jim Jones, 5 years ago I couldn't even tell you that he's Jim Jones. And for the most part, the only thing I and most people my age know about him is he's the Jonestown guy.

It's more that they obfuscate his leftist beliefs and play up his Christianity as if that were the impetus behind leading all those people to their deaths, even though by Jonestown he was telling people the typical commie belief that religion was a capitalist scheme and that everything they were doing in Guyana was about socialism. The suicide had nothing to do with religion, he just knew he fucked up by assassinating that congressman and was telling his (mostly black) followers that the United States had gone fascist and were exterminating black people in concentration camps and that they were going to send fascist stormtroopers to kill them all so they should commit "revolutionary suicide" before they got there.

In Australia I learnt about him in Religion (I went to a Catholic school).

I mean unless you are someone who has a specific interest in something like serial killers you are not going to really bother listening about what Ed Gein's life was like. This whole idea of leftists performing some kind of coverup about the guy doesn't really hold water since you can just google 'Jim Jones' and there is a good amount dedicated to his life before the cult shit in his wikipedia page alone.

-The US government pressured Guyana not to perform autopsies on Jonestown victims' bodies. US doctors were completely dismayed at the negligence and botching of even the alarmingly few autopsies (seven) that were performed. One of those doctors, Rudiger Breitenecker, complained that not a single body was even tested for cyanide poisoning, that the bodies autopsied were embalmed before being shipped to the States, and that they were told to look for needle marks which they never found.

-Joseph Mazor claimed to have led the mercenary raid into Jonestown in September, 1977, claiming that his original assignment had been to kidnap children and then "kill all the adults," i.e. mass extermination.

-Just days following the tragedy, Mazor was paraded across the t.v. screen, claiming that "It was considered that Jim Jones would become a major political force in the Caribbean within five years."

-US Government agent Timothy O. Stoen lured Congressman Leo Ryan to Jonestown and assassinated him. The reason was Ryan's opposition to the CIA.

Leo Ryan wrote the San Francisco Temple that he was indeed going to Jonestown to "retrieve Tim Stoen’s son."

-The official government eyewitness, Jim Cobb, admitted to the press that he never even had the shooters in his line of vision! The final tape at Jonestown repeatedly denied any knowledge of the identity of the Congressman’s assassins, and probing further, it said of the people who brought the report from the airstrip, "They saw it happen, and ran into the bush…" In other words, the people from Jonestown were not the shooters, but witnesses.

tl;dr: the US government was planning to invade Jonestown and massacre the population. Many women and children would have been raped. At least they died with dignity. Nobody would have died if the CIA left Jim Jones and his congregation alone.
