Most French emigration actually went to America and Argentina rather than Canada, but they assimilated very easily in both countries. Same as Germans, really.

More like a lot of families didn't keep detailed records of their ancestors so what people think they know is from word of mouth that grandma supposedly said this one is this or that. Problem with that is wrong information gets told and the family keeps sharing it like it's gospel. Why a lot of descendants of Ulster Scots think they're Irish and shit. With sites like Ancestry becoming more popular I figure there'll be some corrections as time goes on and people do more research on their ancestors and find out the family legends can sometimes be total bullshit.
