I guess that it's a matter of self-esteem. If I have value intrinsically, why spend my life killing myself to progress society? Beyond what is necessary to make a "good enough" contribution and not feel like a leech, of course. And the converse: if my life has no worth, why not put a huge effort into helping some seemingly worthy goal come into being? Thinking back to a pre-civilization environment and applying theory of evolution, we can see why this kind of self-esteem should be found more in women than men. Women give birth. Men are bigger and kill shit better. Someone needs to kill shit and someone needs to have kids, and it's pretty easy to figure out how to split things up.

What if the set of beliefs and stories and symbols we call religion are the "traditional diet" for our minds? What if many aspects of Western society are fundamentally opposed to some aspects of our biology, and certain ideas (like the one that we are all unique children of God) were really quite important for healthy functioning?

I believe religion is much more than that and God is so much more than I could ever understand or even think about, but I've really been thinking about this lately.

It's funny that you brought this up with that phrasing. You have a good idea, but I have another one: I think guys are fundamentally more susceptible to memes than girls.
