A patient in cardiac arrest needs advanced life support ideally within 8 mins to have a better chance of survival. I think I read recently that only 8% of cardiac arrest victims actually make a recovery because they're obviously not in the right environment when it happens. Every house should have a defib ideally and someone who knows how to use it.

Also I don't blame the girl not everyone knowing about first aid, should they? Maybe, because you never know when you'll need to apply it. One of the most effective ways to get someone's heart going again is to punch them in the chest, it's called a precordial thump. Has a high amount of energy similar to that of a defib

Good CPR is a skill that has to be taught and practiced. Most people will do at least one of the following mistakes
>wrong location on chest
>too fast
>too slow
>not enough depth (Rich Piana being very muscular isn't going affect his chest wall compliance in such a way that CPR is significantly more difficult, but small woman suck at getting proper compression depth)
>being too far away from chest, and not getting shoulders right over the sternum
>not locking at the elbows, and instead trying to use your triceps to do compressions for 2+ minutes (men are more guilty of this)

Many health professionals give shitty compressions. In fact, I would say most. However, it really is easy once you've been taught properly, and it should be taught in every high school. Hell, it should be a requirement to get your driver's license or something. There should be some mechanism in society that forces people to learn this.

Just move to Europe, I've probably been through like 5 separate CPR traning sessions throughout my life.

Probably true for single rescuers. The point of compressions is to generate enough blood pressure that you perfuse the person's brain. Guess how long it takes to actually build up enough pressure to actually achieve that? About 15-20 seconds, AKA how long it takes to give 30 compressions at a rate of 100-120 per minute. If you stop to give rescue breaths, then you are immediately losing that perfusion pressure you just painstakingly generated, and have to start over again with your next round of compressions. This has nothing to do with the O2 vs CO2 content of your expiratory air though. What you exhale has enough FiO2 to oxygenate somebody. The problem is losing perfusing pressure.

Now, if you have a partner that can bag mask while you give compressions, that's different, because you don't have to stop to deliver breaths.

There is some data that says compression only CPR may be superior for single rescuers outside of hospital settings, but the American Heart Association still recommends 30:2 ratio for BLS training right now. This may change with later updates. You can read more here:

Nah it can be pretty effective if done perfectly. But all it does is keep at heartbeat/respiration going. You are gonna need a defibrillator to actually save them if they have a heart attack. And if you're worried about being sued, you should do nothing instead. Unless you're certified to do CPR (like a lifeguard or paramedic) you will certainly be sued. Doing CPR correctly will most often result in breaking the persons rib cage. Also if you're just doing without knowing how there's a good chance you'll break their xiphoid process off, which will kill them easily.

This. Compressions are more important than anything. Your body can go without oxygen much easier (still very bad) than without a pulse. Also just breathing into someones mouth doesn't let air into their lungs. You need to tilt their head so that their windpipe is open, which most people have no idea how to do.
