My parets grew up in a socialist state (GDR) and just by listening to the stories they are telling I know that I most definitely don't want to live in a socialist or communist country. And the best part is that we are still affected by the socialist background. Pay is lower in east Germany, worse infrastructure etc. So I really can't understand why people think it would be great to have communism in their country. And I know that the argument is going to come up now "There was no communist state yet because all of them were dictatorships". That might be true, but the utopic communism where everybody is equal just doesn't work out, there need to be people with power in order to keep order in the country, and because of that it will most likely result in a dictatorship

The tactical necessities of warfare require that such an army has generals and chains of command. Therefore the proletariat army will have generals.

Either the proletariat army will be defeated or it will win. If it is defeated, then capitalism persists. If it wins, then its generals will immediately be the most powerful members of society.

Such individuals will necessarily seek to edge each other out for total control, via intrigue or negotiation.

Is there any way to prevent a single individual or a single powerful elite from gaining total control of society in such a situation?

It seems to me that violent revolution is, in general, doomed to dictatorship. I'm not talking about a coup or an invasion from a foreign army. I'm talking about a real revolution, where the slate is wiped clean and the royal family is massacred.

The vacuum of power created by such violence creates an enormous risk for concentration of power in military hands, and the perpetuation of autocratic rule by an elite.

It’s less that they required it and more that it was a tempting option or forced on them directly (i.e. the KPD and SPD want to be seperate in East Germany, take US aid, and compete in elections but the USSR makes them go full lenin and merge into the SED.)

That’s hardly a specific problem with communist revolutions, all revolutions have that problem. General elections, freedom of the press and free speech and expression, these are the best bullwarks against tyrrany. Without a 1-Party state to legitimize dictatorship, a dictator would be pitting themselves against the whole of society.

Not really "marxist" but I used to be lean towards anarchist ideologies, and I shifted towards reformism and a view of state-like institutions as inevitable (sort of like in an Hobbesian view) for the same reason.

It was, but he thought it would happen in his lifetime. Then reforms that made stuff better for most people happened and he became convinced that capitalism could continuously renew itself, so that only agressive initiative could bring about socialism.
