Bump
Also, if you are still on Veeky Forums you have no interest in improving yourself

I want to learn how to properly meditate, but I don't know how to do it properly or if the effects are even worth it.

gonna get some better psych meds soon, go on a couple of dates with girls i met online (i havent dated in like 2 years)

definitely look into it. effects are worth. but it takes a similar timeframe to lifting imo, you'll feel a lot better quickly and make steady progress but being able to maintain high levels of awareness/focus throughout the day can take years of practice

theres a million schools of thought and practices, mindfulness is the one thats most quantifiable and has the most current research done on it.

a simple way to start is beginner zen breathing, you just count your breaths 1-10 and start over from 1. repeat until your time is up.

Headspace is great. It's like carrying your own personal monk around in your pocket.

There's a book called "Wherever you go, there you are" by Jon Kabat-Zinn that's pretty good too.

Start small. Once a day, for 5 minutes, set a timer. focus on your breathing- box breathing, or in for 7 our for 11 count. Either works. If you find your mind wandering, bring it back to your breathing.
You should be in a sitting, neutral spine position with arms relaxed. You can sit criss cross.
If you feel like you can't get a hang of it, take a yoga class. It will teach you exactly how you should be breathing.
Work up to 15-20 minutes twice a day.

holy shit he looks like THAT

Do you have any personal anecdotes of how meditation improved your daily life? Is it an overall effect on your behavior or is it more noticeable only in certain situations?

what if im an autist with ADD n shiet? it feels like i have to squirm around when i try to concentrate. what do?

these other fags don't know what the fuck they are talking about. Do the part one of these exercises for 15-30 minutes every day or two and you will be on top of the fucking world in like 3 weeks

forgot to post link
buddhanet.net/imol/pracexer.htm

started doing this in early high school to help with depression. It vastly improved my quality of life. It'll help you see everything else in a better light, believe me

yes. Do what the exercise recommends. Part of concentration is making that effort that is so hard to make if you have ADD. This should help

Not to knock your opinion, but you don't need this shit. If you dont like the link I posted, look up this:

the Satipathana sutra

In this sutra, the Buddha describes the sixteen steps to obtaining perfect mindfulness. It is an excellent technique. Again, you should see benefits after every session, but notice longer lasting benefits after a couple weeks

Fuck me, I actually meant to say the Anapanasati Sutra

Specifically, the section 'Minfulness of In and Out Breathing'

good luck freunden

R-rude. I love this place and disabled pictures

Dont take meds user accept who you are, dont fuck yourself harder

Lads, can I share my story here? I don't think it's all that impressive, but if I can inspire even someone to better himself, I will consider my work done.

Go on

t. someone whos never dealt with mental illness

Well, there it is then.

I was diagnosticated with salmonella on my fucking blood at seven years old, which put me in the hospital for almost a year (three months of them being in a coma) and needed to do two surgeries. After that, the bones of my right leg were almost obliterated (I needed to relearn how to walk, needed to use a wheelchair, crutches, all that shit), my breathing was fucked up from the prolonged use of a tube from the tracheostomy and I ended almost deaf in a year because the collateral from a medicament. To top it all, I became a fat fuck after I was discharged from the hospital because I couldn't exercise and was depressed as fuck.

Then I had a conversation with my dad, where one of the things he said was that he felt proud of me for surviving, and I couldn't be taken down because of all that shit because we have only one life, and they had faith on me. I decided to put on the work, then. I recovered my fucking leg with years of rehabilitation, I relearned how to hear, read lips and all that shit (now I have only 30% down in one ear, where before I had more than 50% on the two of them), recovered from most of my breathing problems (at the age of ten) by swimming, but still was a fat fuck.

Then my best friend, a turbochad, brought me to the gym at my teens because he wanted me to better myself, so I entered the gym and stopped being a fucking hamplanet and recovered my confidence.

People, fuck everyone and whatever they think. You all have at least one person who cares about you and you all have just one life to do your best. It doesn't matter if you have a mountain of shit dumped on your head or you aren't a Chad, everyone can better himself if they want to put the work. So, to everyone wanting to improve themselves: we're all going to make it, m8's.

thanks for sharing

I'm happy that I'm slowly improving small things about myself. For example, I had a nail infection for years because a doctor told me to wait because it should grow healthy but it would take time. Last year I went to 3 different doctors and started applying a treatment and it's finally healthy.

You have no idea how gross that looked.

Headspace had a good guided meditation app

I started meditating to cope with job stress. I find that ten minutes at the start of the day and then after lunch leaves me calmer and better focused. Been at it daily eight months or so, and I feel less stressed and anxious.

Agreed that apps aren't necessary, but to a newbie, they can be super helpful. I'd tried teaching myself via books before, but Headspace is what let me go from attempts to practice. YMMV, of course.

/Phil/?

Started in on pic related. After binging on Marcus Aurelius and the Stoics, it's an interesting contrast.

listen to headspace until you know what you're doing, then meditate without a guide. guided meditation isn't meditation, it defeats the object. Then go and read 'meditation in plain english.' Then take some LSD and lock yourself in a dark room for 8 hours. Then you will understand how to meditate.

wait shit, 'mindfulness in plain english*'

that is the gayest tattoo i have ever seen desu

Godspeed, user. We're all going to make it.

...

>portable A/C has a blue light
>my room is 80-90 F without it

Oh well.

up

just cover it up with some tape senpai

stop watching porn

It’s not really that kind of “blue” light, I’m pretty sure you’ll be fine

help, I cheated on my girlfriend of 5 years when drunk
what do friends
was going to propose next month
I want to be with her but I messed up and am struggling to live with it
How do you stop yourself from giving in to sexual urges?

Dont marry her if you're gonna be like this.

Tell her and deal with the consequences
Or
Dont and hold your guilt.

Who do you want to be, user?

her husband

How do I stay away from chans. I managed to block all timewasting sites but i am now lurking chans on my smartphone. And I can't get a dumbphone because I need whatsapp for social events and especially for work.

Tell her. If she's alright with you having side-pussy then she's wife material.

Awesome story user

>read scripture and passages in my Bible app followed by a journal every morning
>prayer every night
>no porn or sexual thoughts
>trying to be less lazy around the house
>really close to a job but Martha won't let me be great

So tired, trying not to fall asleep in my chair. Working outside is killing me, my lift session tonight is going to be counterproductive if anything. On a good note I got a decent office job again that starts next week and I'll be going back to school.

Im literally insane sempai

If you really love her, tell her. Holding onto that guilt with someone who loves you will eat at you unless you're a sociopath. I've seen it happen to friends, male and female, before. They think they can bury it as "oh it was just a one-time mistake", then it escapes during a heated argument and they're dead to the person.
Drunk or not, you betrayed her and have to own up to it. Ball's in her court at that point.
Wouldn't you want to know if she did the same to you?

Hello guys, I really want to stop masturbating and actually start lifting weights.

I know that I can do it but the amount of discipline and sacrifice I have to make is frightening as fuck.

Completed/ongoing improvements:
>lost 100lbs+
>gained lots of muscle
>strongest I've been in my life
>lightest I've been since middle school
>money spent on fast food went towards investing
>cleaning up my teeth
>jaw is masculine from weight loss
>manscaping my body
>finding cologne that works for me
>paid off a car
>wardrobe revamped

Future improvements:
>LASIK next year
>becoming more social
>doing more social activities
>learn how to do my eyebrows
>clean up bacne
>find haircut that works for me
>get better hobbies

I can't really find or decide on hobbies I should pick up. Whats a good social hobby? Whats a good active hobby? Debating hiking/backpacking but I can do that fucking solo, and probably will. Need something that forces me in to social situations so I can work on social gains.

How do you like Acorns? My acorns account seems to have a better interest rate than any savings account, but I'm worried about putting most of my savings into an app.

try rock climbing in a club

I fucking love it honestly. Makes it easy to throw money in and what eased me in to investments to begin with. I think for a total newbie it's great. You can do just the roundups and completely ignore it while it adds up.
Saving accounts with banks are worthless in my opinion. I use mine as a glorified emergency fund.

That seems kind of difficult to get in to but I'll look around.

>confess to her that you cheated on her while drunk and how it makes you feel
>turns out she did the same thing
>being honest with eachother has made your bond even stronger

Just tell her user. Your marriage will suck and be full of guilt and lies otherwise.

I have to say, people on SIG threads are so much nicer than people on every other thread on every board

Is right, you fucked up. You either live honestly with the consequences and move on or lie to her and hate yourself for it. I've been in a similar situation, and it took me 2 years to tell the truth, those two years had an immense impact on my being able to develop myself personally due to my guilt.

fuck I meant to reply to this guy

I've only recently started working. My income sucks, but I don't have a lot of expenses. I built up about 10k in my bank account for emergency, and now I'm just pumping any excess into student loan payments.

Should I put a lot of what's in my bank into something like this? Is it worth?

nice

What do they invest it in?

Absolutely. Money sitting in your bank is completely wasted. Of course you should have ~$1000 for emergency, but a good credit card can handle most emergencies. You should pay off your loan ASAP though and once it's paid off, continue the same payments but to a Roth IRA or some kind of investment.

E-Trade has a self managed account at $5000. You could literally open one right now if you're too scared to manage it yourself. Setup automatic transfers based on your income every pay day. It doesn't have to be a lot.

Then setup acorns and do just the roundups, maybe setup recurring transfers of a small amount to get starter as well.

It depends on what type of account you pick. Agressive has more emerging markets and large caps. Conservative has more corporate and government. There are types in-between, and they tell you all the stocks they invest in. Also do rebalancing when necessary.

What colleges do you guys go to? How did you decide them and how has your experience been?

So basically don't bother investing until student loans are payed off?

They're like 5% interest, so I guess anything that won't pay higher than 5% won't be worth it.

How much do you have left?
I would still open an Acorns+Roth IRA to get started. Every day you're not investing is a day longer not in retirement.

>LASIK
user, if you're gonna take any advice in this thread (anyone struggling with myopia or hyperopia for that matter). for the love of god check out endmyopia. Looks "scammy" but isnt, i promise. completely free and works. Lasik only reshapes cornea and doesnt fix axial elongation, it will come to bite you in the ass 5-10 years from now, and you run increased risk of retinal detachment.

About $30,000

Also my income is $25,000 a year.

>$30,000
>income is $25,000
what the hell did you buy with your student loans? a poop shoveling degree?

4.5 years with in-state tuition at a state university.

I fell for the math major meme and work with high school grads now.

My eyes are extremely bad, not something that can be fixed with eye exercise. I will definitely start doing this now though and continue to do so. I'm talking so bad I'm supposed to be nearsighted but it has to be almost touching my face to read without glasses.

Is there anything special you do to find a good cologne, or did you just try them and see what works?

Just try and see what works.
go to a mall and test a lot of them till you find one that isn't too sweet, too overpowering, etc.

Look up transcendent meditation
