This is true. Aside from things like sharing needles, unprotected anal sex gives the highest likelihood of spreading the disease. This is why men who have sex with men are still barred from blood donation, while women who have sex with women are not.

Promiscuity is a big part but population size is something we also need to consider.

Let's say that a gay man and a straight man with both have sex with 5 people in their life. The gay man will fuck 5 out of 100 gay people in his town, while the straight man will fuck 5 out of 10,000 straight people in his town.

prior to the aids epidemic they didnt really have any reason too, pregnacy isnt a worry and STD infection rates were comparable to heterosexual population.

I'm not him and I don't have any citations ready to go, but it's mostly common sense. AIDS and HIV spread through blood and semen. Anal intercourse can cause microscopic wounds to be torn in the anal canal (which is part of why buttsex hurts), which lead into the bloodstream.

As anyone can tell you, you don't have to directly orgasm inside someone to expel semen into them (which is why the Pull-Out Method isn't foolproof) and blood can easily get into your urethra.

I don't think the rate of incident is 1% to anal's 80%, but it makes sense that folks who bash butts are more likely to catch bloodborne STD's.
