Why were slaves in Latin America able to maintain much of their African cultural traditions unlike slaves in the USA? In a few of these countries, the abolition of slavery happened around the same time or even after abolition in the US, and white/black race-mixing was more prevalent.

Latin America had much much much higher death rates. There wasn't really enough time for them to form an identity when they were dying off and being replaced by fresh ones.

You are repeating memes.

Bongoes are not African. They didn't "preserve their culture" anymore than North American slaves did. They may have influenced culture where they were numerous (ie. Cuba, Brazil, Colombia) just like US blacks influenced Southern culture, but that's it.

I'm more talking in terms of religion, though.

Because Hispanics weren't as assholish to blacks as Burgers.

Many slaves were able to fool the Spaniards, making them think they were praying to Jesus/Mary/Saints, when in reality they were worshipping their old deities.

Since American slaveowners were mostly proddies, they didn't allow any images that the Africans could use for syncretism, making it harder for them to keep their religion and their christianization more successful.

Maybe because the Latin colonies got around 11 million African slaves while the States took in only around 200 000.

They sure showed them!

Ha. Slaves were dying like roaches in South America and they had to ship them constantly in order to keep work force available.
In North America slaves were treated like valuable farm animals -they were fed well and they let them form families, living almost like humans with exception that you will never be free and your life will be dedicated to cotton picking.

When you say "Latin colonies" it was mostly Brazil and the Caribbean.

If you are gonna make generalizations like that, most South American countries had almost no slavery, abolishing it right at independence, while the US kept it until the second half of the 19th century.

What are you talking about? The Gullah maintained more cultural aspect from Africa than anyone in Latin America, Gullah even use words and expressions from African languages.

The blacks infected the white man with paganism

The Gullah are a big exception among African-Americans.

in south america they were allowed to keep their drums and chanting and had celebration days protected by the church, in many cities they had "kings" and "queens" with the right to petition civil authorities

Because I like to blame the cathilics for everything

Slavery continued in parts of south america for a long while after it ended in north america

Boogies are afro-Cuban drums based off the central African model.

Some of it slipped in though.

bump

A small minority of the overall African-descended American population, though.

Arguably the (American) banjo is far more African than the bongo drum

Only in Brazil.

So do Maroon Jamaicans.

Oh you sad little man, denouncing every instance of God's work as demon worship.

American music is what it is because of African musical tradition. Popular music around the world would be completely different if America never had African slaves

>The Gullah maintained more cultural aspect from Africa than anyone in Latin America
lelnope.

The dozens of different maroon communities kept far more of their culture, eg. the Ndyuka people:

Lol, the Gullah to Kente clothes, use words from Twi, Vai, Fon, etc... and have a poem from Sierra Leone that they still sing to this day. The Gullah also make African dishes. Sorry but nobody can compete with them.

Guayana is not in Latin America
