I think it's because we tend to sweat a lot and that gives off a stench. Also, the regular application of deodorant isn't a very widely disseminated concept in the Indian community.

I've had one indian friend in hs. He was pretty cool, born in the states and didn't smell. Coincidently I never saw him do anything active, just a skinny lanklet. He's probably a doctor now or something.
