What is the best martial art for combat? I want something that can be used for real life applications, that would be viable in a range of applications from military to police to gangs to street fighting, and all-around self defense.
Playing dirty is fine, I don't care if it's an 'honorable' martial art. I don't want something that attempts to bring the fight to the ground (which I believe BJJ and judo do) because in a street fight or whatever, the ground is a bad place to be because you don't know if the other guy has friends. But I don't want something like boxing, because in real life, fights will inevitably sometimes end up on the ground even if I try not to let them.
I want something that can be used against a single opponent or a group of opponents, and that can be used against an unarmed opponent, or against an opponent armed with a knife or gun. I want something that can be used offensively or defensively. I want something that can be used to fuck up my opponent, or to defend myself and allow me to make an escape. Yes, I know alone and unarmed it would be difficult for me to fight a gang, or fight someone that has a gun, but I want to be prepared as possible for anything.
The ones I am looking at right now are combat sambo, krav maga, muay thai/muay boran, Japanese jiu jutsu, and aikijutsu (apparently a variant of Japanese jiu jutsu). I am by no means dead set on choosing one of these, they just seem the best to my by my research.
To my understanding, a lot of krav maga is watered down faggotry but a few schools are legit. It's also my understanding that BJJ focuses on bringing the fight to the ground (which I don't want), but Japanese jiu jutsu is not like that.
Suggestions on best martial art(s)?

krav maga, the literal purpose is to end the fight as quickly as possible without concern for muh ethics

gracie jiu jitsu (if you have money) or judo for throws/ground game, mix that with some striking art like boxing or muay thai and you are golden. You never want to grapple if it isn't one on one though, that's how you get your face stomped.

escrima is what you want. dont believe me? find out what they teach in the fucking navy seals for hand to hand. you will not find another martial art that will prepare you for armed unarmed single or mulitple opponents. have a jiu jitsu master turn into a novice. they have to touch you to be effective and thats where you are deadly

incorrect answer there is no good "martial art" for combat, when it comes down to it a knife or better weapon will always beat hand to hand combat, but if you really wanted to learn a "martial art" i would recommend krav maga because it teaches you to dodge knife and gun attacks and direct confrontations, however i would also take up knife fighting or get a gun license and conceal carry. >pic is my edc

I'm pretty sure all krav maga is watered down. You're not gonna get the stuff they teach in israel but if you find a decent instructor, they will teach you how to be a bit more safer than you would be.

Martial arts in order of effectiveness best to worst concealed carry and go to a range kali knife fighting carry a knife Grappling- Judo or BJJ (Judo is probably better for real life situations because you can end someone instantly with a throw onto concrete) MMA- you learn a well rounded skillset and get super athletic Muay thai- Most devastating striking art Boxing- Only hands but you will get insanely quick and not many people will be able to hit you (I go to an MMA gym and the boxing class people are next level in how quick they are and defence) Aikido? although its mostly shit they do teach some stuff like wrist locks/eye gouges, etc that is illegal in bjj and could be very effective in a street fight.
Your average guy has some mma knowledge nowadays because of ufc popularity, so you should learn some takedown defence atleast. I would say in a 1 on 1 situation though BJJ is the strongest single art (take a look at Gracie videos vs masters in many other disciplines). MMA would give you the most bang for your buck. Muay Thai or boxing with takedown defence or Judo would be ideal if you wanted the best for realistic multiple attacker situations

BJJ is better suited for cage fighting.

How do you carry it? Do you ever get grief from normies who notice?

Any one that teaches how to properly punch and take a punch. Even boxing. Most real fights don't go further than the first few blows. You vs gun or any weapon is mostly luck.

Pick up BJJ because its the most normal. Also fewer people know how to grapple than how to strike.
Muay thai and moreso boxing = hanging out with bouncers, ruffians, fighters from the lower elements of society. Cool but sometimes negative and draining people.
All in all though i bet you will never have to use this shit if you are a kind, polite, and smart in your daily life. Not fighting >>>> fighting always

>Aikido? although its mostly shit they do teach some stuff like wrist locks/eye gouges, etc that is illegal in bjj and could be very effective in a street fight. The effectiveness of Aikido vastly depends ont he style/school. Also it takes you very long time to master that shit. Try it but don't expect to be good before 5-10 years.

BJJ and some striking training is all you need to fuck up 99% of people who are looking to start shit in public.
I boxed in highschool and did BJJ at a gracie chain gym for a couple years. I was never particularly good, but I feel like I could defend myself against any untrained opponent.
But if I've got a knife on me I'm just going to stab you and run away.
Also, akido, and krav maga are gay as fuck

Sanda (especially police version) Muay Thai Judo Catch Wrestling BJJ Sambo Boxing
These arts are good enough for self defense by themselves. All other martial arts are good to learn supplementary moves from. Most martial arts are quite useful, it's just some of them have unrealistic training or are too specialised in certain fighting areas.
For a beginner I'd really recommend boxing. It teaches you the basic fundamentals. Muay Thai is nice too but the movements feel really unnatural like many aspects of south east asian culture.
James Baker
I would say a combination of boxing/muay thai and BJJ would be the most ideal. Also let me just tell you that fighting anymore than 1 person you just need one martial art: Run-Fu. Don't fucking try to fight people first of all, but if you know the odds are stacked against you just get away. Also who else here trains? Lel i never lift but i do train 3 days a week in jiu jitsu. Bout a year in and i'm a 4 stripe white belt.

I'm not sure if this is a troll post or not. You can't fight groups of people and guys with guns using your bare hands with some magical martial art. You should stop thinking like this because you're only a danger to yourself. Get a gun and do your squats so you can sprint away really fast. Don't spend years training for weird scenarios only to get stabbed or shot in 5 seconds when it actually goes down.
