Hey Veeky Forums two things, Can anyone recommend a bathroom scale for me? My gym has a scale but I work out at defferent times of the day so the reading vary.

I've been front squatting every other day for 2 months and today when I first foam rolled my quads they felt like absolute death. Am I doing something wrong? Bad form? Also tender in my right glute, behind the knee, and my abdominal muscles

Is it just overuse or am I fucking up? I'm pushing myself really hard on it because I want 315 within my first 6 months. Should I tone it back?

For working abs, does it matter if I'm actually hanging while doing leg raises or can I just push myself up on dip bars and do them?

Also, does anyone have a good way to make sure I'm actually activating chest on bench? I try to maintain good form but I mostly feel it in arms and shoulders.

for your abs, you can do your leg raises hanging, on the dip bars of on the leg raise stand; the big difference will be the impact on your arm muscles.

If you just give a shit about you abs do what comfortable.

It's quite normal for foam rolling to be painful in the beginning. It'll get gradually less bad over time.

That said, regarding the second part of your question, it is very possible you should tone it back. If you work hard it's possible to make radical gains in strength quickly by doing super high frequency and/or volume. I call this "strength hacking" - essentially what ends up happening is that you make really good short term progress at the expense of your good health.

I saw a patient a while back. Young woman who'd qualified for the junior European powerlifting championships. She'd only been training her lower body for a year. Obviously she'd been training hard as hell, but that's the whole point. She hadn't yet earned the right to train with such a high volume. You need to work up to that shit over time. She had serious hip and low back pain.

I think pain when foam rolling is quite normal, especially after you've really punished your muscles, nothing to worry about.

but what I would worry about is squatting every other day, that seems a bit too much, not leaving you enough time to rest and regenerate properly imo

It's literally impossible to not activate your chest during the bench press. The degree to which you activate your pecs though can vary. There are a couple of things you can do.

1. You can flare your elbows more and/or try to drop your elbows lower to get a better stretch. This is risky stuff though and can destroy your shoulders over time.

2. You can press your hands inwards towards eachother during the press. Your hands aren't supposed to actually move but the intention will fire up your pecs. This usually means using less weight though.

3. You can do an activation drill first. Any exercise that really makes you feel your pecs will work. Don't go anywhere near failure. Just enough to fire up your pecs.

Personally though, I think it's best to simply call the bench press an upper body exercise, and use assistance exercises to specifically hammer the pecs if needed.

Your arms' position and engagement will have no effect on your abs in this scenario.
Do whatever's comfortable, but if you wanna really go hard in the paint, try dipping down while you lift your legs up, then pushing back up while bringing them down.
Also, you'll get more noticeable pec activation from shit like flies, but when benching, try using your mind to really focus in on squeezing your pecs together. It sounds like a lotta horseshit, but once you start getting into a weight range where you feel like fucking up will break a rib or two, you'll really start to notice it.

Sup niggas. So basically my question is how do I straighten out my Squat form? My posture irl is kind of fucked and despite what I've done to correct it so far I feel it the most in my squats. I can tell I'm favoring my left side because it's more sore than anywhere else when I'm recovering and I realize that in the long term this is pretty bad. Holding the bar on my shoulders always feels a bit difficult, I spend a lot of time trying to make sure my foot position is correct, and several times lately when I finally do go down I end up falling on my ass (thank God for the safeties). I just don't feel like my form is where I want it to be.

So do you guys have any tips for crafting a more optimal form for Squats?

I think so. I was told that by my primary doctor as a young teenager but I was also a stupid little idiot who never stood up straight when he was told to so I'm not 100% sure. I'd air on the side of "probably" though.

Get your hamstrings and ankles as flexible as you can, use a lifting shoe with a high, TPU heel. Both of these will help you keep you maintain your lumbar curve and keep your center of balance where it needs to be, in the middle of your foot.

Dude just fucking do bodyweight squats or dumbbell lunges or some shit. Learn how to properly move your body and get into and out of the squat position without a barbell first and foremost.

And if you want real advice on how to fix your squat form, go on youtube and find some videos bro.

Holy shit thanks guys this sounds perfect. I had considered doing bodyweight squats but I avoided them because I didn't want the slower progression but ya know falling on my ass and snapping my shit up seems a lot worse than following your advice and focusing on mobility and form over seeing big numbers on the bar. I'd never see a chiro though, they're phony af but I do appreciate the suggestion none the less.

So in conclusion I guess I'll do bodyweight squats at home and dumbbell lunges at the gym until I feel more confident and then I'll work with the bar a little at a time instead of trying to force progression in spite of a handicap and yoking my body to pieces.
