What martial art should I study?

-I'm 6'2'' (188 cm) and 140 lbs (63 kg).

Boxing.

Boxing or Muay Thai. At 6'2 140 you aren't going to have the strength for grappling, but your range relative to your weight is going to be incredible.

Goddamn you're a twig.
Bulk up a bit.
For now do anything striking related, like boxing or kickboxing or muay thai, your range is going to be huge in your category.

Bjj

His strength relative to his weight is likely incredibly bad though. Also he's probably has no quickness or explosion due to no muscle mass. You can't survive as a 6' 2" 140 pound boxer. Some one at 5'8" 150 would kick his shit in

boxing and jiu jitsu. They're the only thing you really need to be good at MMA. All other forms of martial arts are memes.

At least he has some advantage there in range, in anything grappling related they are going to manhandle him

>google "martial arts "
>look at results
>try out the ones near you
It's that fucking simple dude. How are we supposed to know what you enjoy. Physical characteristics like manlet status don't mean anything.

Just do w/e interests you. I started bjj about a year ago, same height as you but at around 65-67kg. Ive been gaining weight slowly, about 75kg atm. Youll be getting your ass kicked at every type of combat sport, but at least in bjj chances of getting brain dmg is lower than in hitting sports like boxing etc.

Boxing, any form of wrestling (folkstyle, freestyle, greco roman, catch), muay thai, legit kickboxing, full contact karate (kyokushin, etc),judo, sambo ,sanda (chinese kickboxing+ wrestling), bjj .There are other good martial arts but do your checkuos to see if the gym is legit and spar hard. Maybe ask sherdod forums for advice.

Depends what you wanna do famalam, self-defense? Just a sport to enjoy?

Taekwondo. Use those long ass legs of yours

bjj, but don't become one of those guard pulling faggots learn to take down

/thread

>no kicking

Hows Krav Maga? Any one have experience with training in it

Really it's just a way to stay active, since my doubles partner is moving away so I won't be on the court as often. But it would also be nice to be able to defend or assert myself if I get into a situation that requires it

Most boxing gym or dojo have first class free promotions. Go to a couple and see which one you enjoy the most.

The one you enjoy the most. The one that you will actually practice week after week and that you want to compete in

Also, bulk up.

In this day and age there's only one martial art that actually allows you to protect yourself: gun-fu

Not in all countries. Not even aloud to defend your family from intruders, you will have them confiscated even if you don't even fire a shot.
Clearly your an Amerfag

Also it often has little to do with the art you learn but more so the mentality of the instructor and yourself.
Anyone whom thinks one art is superior to another is clearly blind and idiotic. If you as a student don't put the dedication into your training you will be shit, if the instructor does not show dedication to his class and encourage them push themselves further and harder constantly then they are a shit instructor

>Zero kicking techniques
Are you sure about that?

BJJ
Muay Thai
Boxing
Wrestling

I'd start with any of those. See what's in your area and try some classes. Most places your first class is like a free trial so you can see if you lile it.

Don't listen for a second to the fucking plebs going on about MHU BODY TYPE. They have no idea are the're talking about.

t. 6'1" 155lbs lean skelly who actually does Muay Thai and BJJ

Did my second class of muay thai today. Its pretty dope and mma approved.

THANK YOU SKELETON

Unless your a girl who is also a model, requiring you to be anorexic, I would put on about 60 lbs of mass.

I'm 6'3" 205 lbs and I'm a twig. I can only imagine how emaciated you must be.

>6'2"
>140 lbs
Good God, eat a fucking chicken breast or something before you turn to dust. Jesus...

>don't listen to the non-skellies, they dunno nuffin!
t. Eugenia Cooney

It's a meme that boils down to eye-gouging and nut kicking

This OP has a higher center of gravity and is a twig they'll be tossed around easy. TKD or muy thai is their speed. Considering how under weight OP is I doubt they have any upper body strength to speak of so TKD and muy thai would be better. OP could always do kyokushin for fun.

Krav Maga is legit, I just finished my 7th class but my partner had 3 years of experience and I can’t quite possibly think of a way to attack him without a knife in the back. Though it’s for everyone idk if you could use it because you need to break free of grapples or grapple so force also means a lot, so yeah either way gain some weight

>For your height and weight (6'2 140lb) you should definitely start with Taekwondo.

You have the perfect height with long legs to start the Taekwondo regime of kick training. I have been doing it for 3 months now and think its is really good. It is a great discipline

Knock out punch

Wing chun ----martial arts style is superior

Boxing/Muay Thai and Bjj should be your foundation.

girl fight

you should be doing goju-ryu.
it deals with grappling, take downs, how to land properly, teaches you pressure points, and general striking along with some more complicated stuff, ground based kicks as the second you leave the ground you immediately loose any ability to change your momentum, basic and more complex block/defense, grabs and locks, the odd bit of eye gouging and ear drum bursting, form and discipline as well as breathing techniques and meditation to increase focus.
basically it teaches you to be a well rounded fighter. it also is taught traditionally(by any good instructor that is).
Although it is a style of karate and was formed in Japan it actually originates from china, and is a mix of alot of Chinese arts.

Besylt for stocky frame.....op should do taekwondo or boxing or fencing.
But theyll help bulk him up

Op what country u from to narrow it down

Thread was finished here, why the fuck has it continued?

6'5" here, 180lbs. Not a twig, just king of lanklet frame and low %BF. He could have my frame.

memes aside that gif was really well done, they should do kungfu movies together

>oh jesus christ Stacy shut that thing it smells like sardines!

I grapple since 3 weeks. It's pretty cool but pretty technical. Especially if you don't have a background in martial arts ike me. Thinking of maybe doing BJJ too because the sports are so similiar

Yeah why the fuck are people discussing a subject on a message board, wtf????

Do you wanna punch and kick or grapple? Or all of them?

Either way you need to gain weight. You're gonna get destroyed with that frail body and you're gonna feel super worn down and unable to recover.

depends on what you like , if you like grapling you can go for judo or bjj if like striking you xan do kyokushin or boxin or muay thai , also eat more to gain a few pounds try to at least reach 85-80 kg do some weighjt training

>asking Veeky Forums for advice on martial arts

Anyway, go for muay thai.

Without a doubt the best, very solid striking and the clinch teaches you how to work using your weight and that of the enemy.

Sure, it has no ground game but teaches you how to stay on your feet, never lose balance and get tough and conditioned. I still suggest you to look up and learn how to defend against slams/takedowns if your goal is to be able to defend yourself "in the streets".
Remember that most faggots out there don't know shit about striking and fighting in general.

And don't listen to those saying that you need to gain a lot of weight, you don't need to weight 200 pounds to fuck people up especially if you are striking.

Sure, it helps but I bet my ass that any very technical 60kg thai can outgrapple (not even counting the fact that he would be able to elbow them in the temple in a split second) the buff 200lbs faggots that post here.

There are many thai fighters that fought against much heavier opponents and fucked them up, they really belive in skills over weight and it's very common for thais to give up weight.
Look up Nokweed, Petchboonchu, Nuengpichit, Samai Chor Suananant they all fought against much heavier opponents and came out on top.

youtube.com/watch?v=TQ1f_o2moKA

here is Nokweed against Le Banner (72kg against 107) he lost to a decision but still proved how tought he was.

Pic related is Tway Ma Shaung, probably the most famous burmese lethwei fighter, a fucking killer.

youtube.com/watch?v=DHPt4sxA840

here he is weighting 63kgs against a 79kgs opponent

Literally this

Pretty much any non-memey martial art with live sparring is a good choice. I wrestle and do judo, the only striking arts taught nearby are shit

>6'2
>140lbs
>assert myself
lel

>Nokweed
kek'd

why are Thai's such namelets

THANK YOU HUNGRY SKELETON

do systema

At your numbers, it doesn't really matter what you're going to be doing. If you just want to have fun, do whatever. If you actually want to do something seriously, start with grappling, since you're not going to be getting the shit beat out of you. BJJ or Judo. You probably want to start with bulking though, since you're actually a skeleton.

>do memestema

Get into boxing the rest will just get you laughed at because the majority of instructors are teaching joke martial arts to small children for "discipline".

nice meme

>itt retards who have never heard of weight classes

How are some of you so dumb? If you have no idea what you're talking about why pretend you do?

Historic
European
Martial
Arts

Also how are your knees?

anything that uses your range well such as boxing or kickboxing, but weight classes exist

although it isn't a real martial art, if you're a bit Veeky Forums you could try full contact larping and put those tennis arms to use. pic related

Isn't boxing going to fuck up my face?
I don't want to get deformed desu

>Isn't boxing going to fuck up my face?

If instead of using gloves your partner has a baseball bat then yes your face will get deformed

Alright i believe it
And what about kicking?

Superior to boxing in every way
Why would you limit yourself to using just your hands?

It's a full contact martial art, you're gonna probably have some form of arthritis in your legs if you do it professionally, if it's just for leisure then probably not. When you sign up talk with some of the guys who have been there for awhile, there's only so much information you can glean from this Vietnamese wall painting website

Alright but what kicking sport do i do? Muay thai?

Literally no one has arthritis from kicking... Do you even know how arthritis forms?

Kickboxing/Muay thai, google some places around your area, they should usually have a trial of some sort, if some guys compete in ammy/pro circuits then you're in a good place

If you want to be healthy, choose one with lots of stretching, breathing, cardio type of stuff. If you want defense, find one where they spar a lot. Every school is different, even within the same style. As a kid, I did a style that was a mix of shotakon and kung fu, and we sparred every single night. I hated it, but I learned a lot about how to stay healthy, and I'm not afraid of fighting or taking hits. It didn't make me some super warrior or jujitsu master, but it definitely taught me to avoid fighting if possible.

I bet you think running causes arthritis too. Nice momscience

Kickboxing/muay thai are really similar, so it doesn't matter. What's more important is finding a good gym with good instructors and competent students. If it's not a spar heavy gym there is no point in wasting your money there

this. i started doing some shit alone most of the time. Me and a buddy are doing some sparring every now and then. If you want to be able to smash some soyboys or win a barfight, this is the shit that does it effectively.

Want to get more specialised and able to fight people who know what they are doing ?
Do some real Krav Maga

kicks dont work in real life
all your opponent needs to do is catch your leg and in the next moment youre on the ground getting stomped

>-I'm 6'2'' (188 cm) and 140 lbs (63 kg).
this cant be real?

>I have no idea what I'm talking about: the post

Training boxing with no real instruction just teaches bad habits. Sparring with no instruction will make you about as good as the little niggers that fight in the bathroom between class in highschool. Krav maga is a meme "self defense system," not a martial art.

>someone else is a /fittg/ crossboarder
Larp is fun but only if it is a full contact fighting one like belegarth or dagorhir. It won't do much for you if your goal is self defense but it is pretty good for fun and cardio if those are your goals.

>some drunk retard is going to bend over and catch your leg during a snappy low kick
I'll pretend that wasn't a retarded implication for a second and say this: it's better to know how to kick and not use it than not know how. No one said you have to use the kicks "in real life," but there is literally no downside to being a more well rounded fighter.

>6'2"
>140 lbs

Why isn't anyone pointing out this piece of shit is a lanklet skeletor who will never make it? Jesus Christ post pic

It's been pointed out several times in this thread you illiterate fuck

If you don't know how to snap then sure, a kick wouldn't be useful.

>punches dont work in real life
>all your opponent needs to do is catch your arm and in the next moment youre on the ground getting stomped

that's how retarded you sound

Genius, you just don't lead with a kick. You follow through with them once your opponent opens a gap for it.

Honestly a good Karate Dojo won't hurt if you have 0 expirence. Don't expect to be a good fighter as it is martial arts 101. After that do boxing or Muay Thai. If your legs are long I'd recommend Tae Kwon Do or even Capioera for kicks.

How can you say that they are really similar? Even the roundhouse is really different, kickboxing has little to no clinch, t he sweeps and t he catches are very different, there little to no trips, a very different set of knees, no elbows and the mindset is different.
A good muay thai gym teaches you everything you need to know to strike, the meme that muay thai has bad hands is bullshit. It was true in the 40years ago,

If he wants a martial arts thats fun and teaches you how to defend yourself, muay thai is the answer. Most of the guys out here have no idea how to defend the clinch. You can fuck anyone up with a basic thai plum and a couple of good knees

shooting

>Implying a punch and a kick are anywhere near the same speed

hey guys, i'm 230lb and 5'8"- looking to start BJJ.

i cycle and kayak a lot, but don't have much upper body strength.

what are the best exercises i can do to get myself prepped for the classes?

so far i've been doing:
-burpees
-hindu pushups
-russian twists/situps
-wall balls
-jumping lunges

My knees are pretty good, I think. I have pretty solid joints from the tennis and everything.

Boxing Muay Thai Judo Sambo

Everything else is a meme

>definitely taught me to avoid fighting if possible.
this is the hall mark of any good club. should always be taught the best way to avoid a punch is not to be in a fight in the first place

whatever seems most fun and interesting to you desu. Although If you are wanting to get to the high levels of your chosen martial art I might recommend against judo and wrestling if you're planning on staying relatively lanky. Striking wise I'd say dutch style kickboxing or muay thai. Grappling probably BJJ as some longer guys have a pretty killer guard game.

>meme thai fanboy thinks his style of kickboxing is special
neck yourself
The difference between western kickboxing, Chinese kickboxing (sandou), Thai boxing, Russian kickboxing, etc. is slight variations of the same techniques. That quality of the gym you are training at is vastly superior to the "style" of kickboxing.
>B-BUT MUH CLINCH
fuck off
muay thai clinch consists of some weak ass trips and a knees. Any semi competent grappler will fuck the thai boxers life over in the clinch

>sandou
I mixed the words sanshou and sanda, oops. Both words refer to the same style

about to continue boxing soon.
in the meantime, how should i workout?
HIIT-training every 2nd/3rd day?
low rep/high volume or vice verca with lifting? or just calisthenics?

At what age is it too late starting with martial arts? I imagine most beginner gyms just run courses for children as a sport activity and nothing really for older folks

not really true. Plus there isn't really such a thing as a beginner gym in my experience. Most decent gyms will run both beginner and advanced classes. Try and find a gym that produces fighters and competes

>look at muay thai gyms
>rates are expensive af

are you guys rich?

Plenty of martial art gyms have beginner classes (or other beginners). Check out their facebook pages.
I would not suggest Judo, it's rough unless you train from child. BJJ (with gi) however can be played pretty "slow" if you want something to ease into.

what is expensive to you?

I pay $75 a month and that gets me muay thai and submission wrestling.
I am HOME GYM MASTER RACE though, so I don't have to pay for a gym

It's fun, it works and it'll make you fit, to some degree.
But it's not a martial art and shouldn't be treated as one.

75 a month is expensive as hell for a broke student like me

i long for the days when i can afford to spend 75 bucks a month on anything
