Military

Any Marines here? I'm 24 and about to enlist as an infantry rifleman. 4 year degree as well so they want me to look at becoming an officer as well.

Experiences and advice?

You're joining the wrong branch. Enjoy your crayons and glue.

Go officer if you actually join. So much less baloney to deal with than enlisted folks.

t. enlisted

Former infantry (0311) here....if you have a degree and arent going officer your a fuckin retard

>but muh experience

Seriously if you have a fucking degree become an officer

Elaborate or your comment has zero credibility.

of course they'll tell you they want you to officer as you enlist, but you're missing door #3: just go to OCS instead of enlisting.

You don't need to enlist to go officer user.

Marines are all riflemen first, why are you joining the Marines specifically? what programs/specs do they have which other branches don't that appeal?

>implying you can choose your job

Why not go Army? If you want to be enlisted, you'd enter as an E-4.

muhrines are awful, and not in the 'suffering with your brothers' type of awful that everybody who enlists expects and wants. awful in the 'this is fucking retarded' sense

Its an inside joke made by the other beta branches

Me to. The Guard or Air Guard as an officer though as I have a good job in government but miss doing national security shit.

Bad news as I understand it: I have a master's from a top 10 school in public policy and experience doing intelligence in the private sector. Also got some rusty Arabic.

Everyone says the army uses exactly none of your previous experience in deciding where to place you. There is a points system that preferences ROTC grads and then they throw people into slots regardless of talent or ability or any thought to skills and experience.

Obviously promotions are all seniority too early on and then politics later.

That said, it is what it is. I trained Guard units before so I kind of knew all this going in. Just don't expect it to work anything like the private sector. The Army and Marines especially are blowing through their talented officer corps pool due to poor retention based on it being organized poorly. If that sort of shit gets under your skin, avoid the military.

Bonus is of course good work and benefits. Opportunity to do work you couldn't elsewhere, etc.

If you have a degree you should go officer. Also be prepared for an intense boot camp, the marines don't fuck around.
You choose your job in every branch except navy (they make you pick 4-5 and they assign whichever they like)

I want to keep my current job so I am considering officer reserve. What are your insights on that?

>I'm 24 and about to enlist as an infantry rifleman.
Fucking why would you waste your time there, at least in prison you would get a decent work set of skills and education that you could put towards making dosh. In the force all you end up doing is getting yelled at the told to pick officers cigarette buds and paint trees and hsit 4 fking years of your life down the drain lol, go to uni join frat house and make some memories lol

The reservists are jokes and every reservist ive ever met was constantly sucking the career planners dick to go active regardless of their civillian positions...based on my experience youll be doing the same

Even reserve officers?

Yes...every single one was trying to go active

False.

Yes the Navy gives you a pool of options based on your ASVAB, but you can choose that option and be given it if you're qualified. Another lie is that once you go to MEPS and they give you your options that you need to choose from one of them; you can just nope outta there. That is what I did when the only two options they offered me (with a 95 ASVAB) were subs or cook. They even said "you can't say no." I did, left. My recruiter also said "normally you can't reject your options." Bullshit, you can.

The one "truth" that I ran across was that classifiers will sometimes just give you the options of the quotas they are trying to hit (hence subs and cook).

t. Former Navy IT. Second time I went to MEPS they offered everything under the sun except Intel and Crypto

Absolutely no reason not to go officer. It's better in every way. More money, better people, ect.

This.

Former US Army infantry here. There's a big secret behind all the dickwaving and branch infighting among the military.

The short version is that Marines are tougher, but they don't fight anywhere near as intelligibly as army soldiers, it's harder to get promoted, and they're using outdated equipment. At the end of the day, a lot of people forget that the reason vets get a lot of respect in the US is because you're literally going to a recruiter and handing them a blank check that says "x years up to and including my life," so the little bitches joining for free college or because they want to play real life call of duty or whatever usually get washed out pretty quickly.

Marines compensate for this by their machismo. Every fighting branch has machismo, but Marines are champions of flexing nuts and doing things the hard way just for the sake of doing them the hard way. Just look at Marine tactical manuals versus Army tactical manuals (and no, they're tactics are different because "marinez r alwayz ferst."

If you want to be a marine more power to you, but at least go in as an officer if you have a degree. Don't go in enlisted first.

Also, one thing I forgot to add, the military's understanding of "fitness" (Army, Navy, Marines, whatever) is pretty bad. Bad food,a bajillion calisthenics, PT that injures everybody - joining the military for fitness is going to help only if you're overweight to begin with. You won;t even look that different after OSUT / boot.

Don't.Just don't.

But hey, since you're so damned stupid as to join fucking infantry, I don't know why you are bothering us. We know you aren't asking for advice, we know you are actually asing for your ass to be kissed.

I mean I'm literally asking your guys' opinions. You don't have to be a fucking cunt.

Enlisted in Navy after dropping out of Uni

Spent six years hopping from one base to another (only spent a few months on a ship). Currently making 52k a year in my trade and have no desire to leave
I recommend the Navy and AF over the Army mainly because the sleeping accommodations are 100x better

I'm the Army guy who wrote you the novel a few posts up.

Yes, this guy is right. The list of services by happiness and rate of suicide are:

Coast Guard
Air Guard
Air Force
Navy
Army
Marines

If you already signed the papers and swore in at meps the second time, you're stuck, but seriously consider other options.

As an infantry veteran, the thing is you aren't qualified to do anything after you get out.

>the thing is you aren't qualified to do anything after you get out.
This is why, if you want a career after the military, you should pick a job that isn't infantry. The military pays you while sending you to school for training in whatever field you pick. Not only that, but you have the GI bill for when you get out. Pick a good job and you're basically set up for life afterwards.

>Experiences and advice?

Do your time, wake up and realize what it means to join the military

Do your time, get some skills, move up in the world

If you already have a degree and some actual skills in a field don't go infantry. Aim higher

So true. The thing is I had some college and joined infantry because I bought into the whole "fighting for freedom" stuff (embarrassing, I know). But I was young and it all ended up working out.

>Join army
>everyone including recruiters and drill sargeants amazed at ASVAB scores
>can get literally any job in the army
>pick EOD
>fail first test with an 83 when an 85 is needed to pass, no retries
>”here user, we’ll give you 5 choices of the shittiest jobs no one wants for your next MOS”
>”oh you put that one as last choice guess what that’s your new MOS”
>yes let’s make one of the smartest people to come through here into a truck driver great use of talent
>”don’t worry you can change your job after a year”
>2 years later
>”yea we still can’t change you there’s not enough truck drivers in the army, 2 more years truck driver for you!”

Fuck the military

The army sucks and I love ripping on it but, to be perfectly honest, your situation is literally all your fault.

My fault because I just wasn’t good enough at the job I picked? Then taking the next 4 years of my life as punishment, being around the worst shitbags imaginable? I can understand maybe making me do a job I don’t want for a year but this is ridiculous.

>smartest person to come through the army
>fails first test

>My fault because I just wasn’t good enough at the job I picked?

Exactly.

What the fuck did you expect? You failed.

I failed because I studied what I was told to study. The teacher said specifically not to study one part of the material, so I focused on everything else. Turns out all the questions I missed (except one) were the unstudied material. I guess I’m just too gullible

Sounds like typical big green weenie buttfucking

Ok. I hope you take a test someday that, not getting 8.5/10 questions right, you are forced to do a job you hate with people you hate for 4 years.

>Experiences and advice?

how do you feel about dying for an orange cheeto?

what's not to understand?

You get fed crayons and glue, you marry the first pussy with legs to get off base, and you divorce before you finally get you reenlistment papers, you bounce out as an E-4, then bitch about how much the real world is nothing like your hardened corps, you post dank memes, and become a drag on the tax system because of your 40% va.

I love my va pay btw

>lelele if u joen da milatarah u gon diee son
If you don't want to see combat, don't pick infantry. Simple as that.

Also, the test needs to be 50 questions, and I hope you get one off at 42 when you needed 43 right.

Ehh.. become a cake eater if you dont want as much respect.. Go 0311 if you want some trigger time.
They deff want you to be a cake eater if you have a bachelors degree tho. Civies will respect you but ground pounders wont

Your recruiters are lying to you. You have to enlist as a non officer... To become an officer. No. Just go to ocs if you have a degree.

Honesty if if I could go back and do it all over again I would have walked away and never joined.

As an 03, here are your options:
>Don’t enlist and live the rest of your life wondering “what if?”
or
>enlist and realize how much of a dumbass you are

You could go the officer route, and you probably should, but there’s no guarantee that you’ll be in the infantry. Or you could enlist as a grunt and as 24 year old with life experience you’ll be kissing the ass of a 20 y/o LCPL with a UDP or MEU under his belt. You will get a lifetime of pride though for your dumb decisions. We are harder, dumber, and stronger than the other, richer branches.

this. from personal experience don’t go marine infantry. You don’t understand the suck yet. Waking up and realizing this was your own doing counting every day. you’re older so you’ll be more well adjusted but if you’re smart you’ll lose your fucking mind in the corps. Just endless retardation. Your ass is fucking someone else’s property dude. You don’t have an appreciation for what that means since you’ve been kicking it as a civilian your whole life. my advice get a job in whatever your degree is and forget about this. If you’re not that dumb, af or navy officer. If you really want to be a marin that bad. OCS. you’re too old and educated to put up with enlisted life user.

HOOYAH

You should have just requested mast everyday until they changed you.

I LOVE YOU FRUITY RUDYY

If you go officer be prepared to get shafted with a shit job because of the TBS lottery.

>You don’t understand the suck yet.

Literally this. The drill instructors will be saying how everything in the Marine Corps sucks and that Marines complain all the time. But they counter it with the idea that they've earned it.

Seriously, Marines complain a lot. Because the Marine Corps sucks.

Lol I love seeing other people suffer as a truck driver

>88M in reserves, other options at MEPS when I went were cook or fueller, 96 on ASVAB

Reserves I’m sure isn’t like AD, but if you only had those 3 options then you have some pretty shitty line scores man. It’s not about the actual ASVAB score, literally no one cares about that. Go on your ERB and on the left side it’ll say GT, ME, TE, etc. that’s what your options are based on

its not gay to think fruity rudy is hot, we all think hes hot

Don't. The whole thing is fucked.

Yeah go Army

They actually aren't that bad, far as I can tell. I got screwed by recruiters/myself and got sent to MEPS as early as possible, a full year away from the first available basic training date. It's also my fault for not saying I'd go another day when I got my options.

I ended up moderately happy overall, I enjoyed deployment doing real army stuff, looking into ROTC now. It's like Stockholm Syndrome.

Anyway, for OP: Everything is retarded and you'll hate it at the moment. You'll still hate it afterwards, less, but just remember that everything sucked and you hated it for a reason. It can still be worth it depending on why you did it and what you want. Being older, everyone around you will be a child. Army at least gives you E4 as a consolation with a degree, not sure about Marines.

Look into OCS opportunities and Green to Gold (Army, again not sure if there's similar in USMC) if you really want to do enlisted service first. You can possibly go up later, but not down. Officer or enlisted, you're going to be obligated for at least 3-4 years, and what you get either way is very different. Enlisted you're going to get a lot of hands on field time and training, because your job is to be a body doing a thing. You're going to have a lot more shit rolling downhill and piling up on your shitty life. As an officer you're going to be a manager (or some office specialist if pog), moreso than the branch you're in. You'll have a general idea and be doing infantry stuff, but your job will be to be a leader. You're going to be seen as a retard at first either path, justifiably because you just got in.

As said earlier, fitness is retarded. Training schedules are retarded. People are retarded.
Go for what you want as hard as you can, and remember why you want it.

marines notoriously receive little funding. perhaps that is what this half wit is suggesting. idk.

Being part of the US military is the most cucked job you can have.
Your job will be shit, your life will be shit, and all you accomplish will be furthering some jews money making agenda.
You can choose anything else and at least take a shot at achieving something or being happy.

no

Lol retard. You can definitely pick your rate in the navy, of course unless you fucked that asvab up

Would joining the national guard be a good move? Im in school and need a way to pay for it and having a part time job isn't making the cut. Will it fuck my gains up? (I know I shouldn't care about this but I do)Is it worth it?

It's a six year contract, with at minimum 4 months of training at some point (within a year of joining) and 2-4 weeks of annual training. Is there a specific job you want? Do you want to join? Are you in a shitty state which has no money for NG?

You're going to get the minimum drill pay for your rank, look it up; probably $100-200 before taxes and contributions, based on rank and time in. You'll only get Tuition Assistance after 1 year in. I don't know shit about Montgomery GI, but you wouldn't get regular GI bill. 50% with your minimum training, which isn't worth it compared to the 100% after 3 years active time.

Damn didn't know it was a six year contract. I'm a little interested in Aviation but if it's that much training then I might just have to take a year off uni but we'll see. 50% of the GI Bill would honestly be fine to pay for the rest of my schooling since I've been doing alright with it so far. Thanks for the info gave me some more to think about, I just need to decide if it's something I truly want to do

Training to be a seal here
> tfw currently sick

>24
>enlist in the Infantry

RIP knees, go Officer instead or Tanks/AAVs, how tall are you by the way user?

...

...

Don't most tankers get fucked up knees too tho?

If you're fit then go some type of SOF.
Regular infantry isn't worth it and you'll actually be around a group of people closer to your age. Youre older and have a better mind going in.
Alternatively go officer, enlisted is good only for certain specialized jobs or SOF jobs.

POLICE THAT MOUSTACHE

you're 24 with a degree. don't fucking enlist lmao

god soldiers are stupid

This type of shit is precisely why I left the Air Force and a local police agency. The problem with the US military and pseudo-military is that the dummies took over. Anyone that is worth a damn gets sick of the bullshit and leaves; which leaves only the dummies to promote. After they promote the cycle begins again. I can't remember how many times I had to butt heads with morons who held on to ridiculous beliefs that do nothing but screw retention

Sure some (most) days suck, but when you have cool days in the service, they're really fucking cool. I'm going back for officer school tryouts this summer. I've been working as middle management in IT for 5 years now and I've been hating it every single day the last couple years. I don't fit in with these civilians and the bullshit has run rampant here as well with equality, progress and so on. I'd rather be out in the snow freezing my ass off

Since this is a military thread, I've been thinking of asking for some diet tips on here for "hell week". Will be 6 days without sleep and food, what should my diet be the couple weeks before to load up as good as possible to preserve gains and keep energy levels up? Training for it is going well, will be in the best shape I've ever been at the tryouts and I should be way ahead of the competition in all regards

Can't say much for the other branches, but they will treat you like a kid no matter what job you train for in the Army.

>be me
>pick 68K (Medical lab technician)
>year long training
>the first six months were God awful TRADOC bullshit
>have to be back in the barracks by 8pm
>can't walk around alone, have to be with another soldier
>no drinking, even if you're over 21
>course had a lot of drop outs due to difficulty of tests (75% is required to pass the tests)

Can't really complain much about the tests though, they did have to cram 2 years of education into us as soon as they could. But at the end of the day, my MOS gave me 65 college credits from GWU as well as an MLT certification so I'm trained to work in hospitals when I get out.

I was also lucky enough to get stationed in a pretty relaxed unit. Although I have to help with the occasional trash pickup detail, I know it could be a lot worse. Some others I went to AIT with are in field units and stuck in a motor pool all day

>go to uni join frat house and make some memories lol

(You)

If there was any president worth dying for its trump the patriot, you fucking nigger hang yourself.

>you bounce out as an E-4

says you, most will be LUCKY as a grunt to bounce out as a Corporal

Fuck that means you dun gud muhreen

Fuck you Captain Mckrinkledick

Active duty Marine here. Don't do it. Especially not as a 03. I just reenlisted and lat-moved from being a 03 because its gay as aids. You'll be older than most of your ncos by 3 years and you'll resent everything and everyone bc they have no experience in life or adversity faced. Infantry right now are POGs anyways. I went to Afghan once and there were no real combat operations.

I stand corrected, we have the same GT score, CO, and EL and everything else is balanced; the others are mixed between you being higher and me being higher.

You really did get fucked man, why did you say yes? Should have told them to fuck off because my pretty sure you qualify for everything as well, they were just trying to fill their quotas.

Again, fuck the military.

Around 80% of people in my basic training were Nasty Girls joining for college money

Are you already in he navy? Because unless you’re an Olympic fucking athlete the chances of you passing are extremely slim. Heard too many stories of people ending up like that one user up the thread who get stuck in shit jobs after failing SEAL

>user, did you shave this morning?
>“yes”
>so your hair just grows really fucking fast does it
>GET DOWN

Also, your recruiters lie to you to get you to enlist.

Dont fucking do it

any ausbro's here who are ADF? tell me about what you do if so pls

Not a marine, but I was attached to the US Army Paratroopers 503rd/173rd Airborne, did a couple of combat tours in Afghanistan and now I'm back in my nations' SOF group.

Depending on what you're wanting to do in the marines, take training seriously, keep fit and get as much time on the range as you possibly can; given the current political climate it's impossible to say whether or not another war will happen soon, but it's painfully obvious when you're running search&sieze operations with guys in your unit that have hundreds of hours less experience than you behind a weapons platform.

Also

>Get out as soon as you fucking can, make use of the GI bill and get a real career.

I’ve never met or heard of an ADF guy who wasn’t but buff as shit. Apparently they don’t do much running, and they don’t do the stupid PT shit we do in the US, it’s all iron baby. They are pretty cool dudes too

Cheers brah. Holy shit that sounds promising.

Also, excessive use of the word “cunt”

Whatever the fuck a “git” is too

haha fuck yes cunt
Where I'm from a git is like a dickhead. It might be different elsewhere though

im not a marines. but im the military. i serve in the idf but i unlike you i didnt chose it. im order to do so by law. if i could choose i never fight anybody for anything. diyin for a piece of land its stupid but what more stupid is diyin for someone else pocket.

I've ran with some Australian Army infrantry and SASR shooters in the past few years with my unit providing operational support on Australasian missions on occasion.

Have to say that the SASR is one of the most highly trained and exceptional forces on the planet, falling short of US Army Special Forces and British SAS. Would happily walk through the fire with any of the boys on that squad.

Neat. Cheers lad. What did you think of the Australian Army infantry?

Highly skilled, not to the level of SASR but definitely not a shit-show. Unfortunately there are politics involved, but the unit culture and training is pretty fucking solid from what I understand. I think any ADF position would be a solid choice, whether navy, army, air-force etc.

>unit culture and training is pretty fucking solid
>I think any ADF position would be a solid choice, whether navy, army, air-force etc.
Thanks again lad. I ask because my younger brother is looking to join the navy. He's very disciplined and a very hard worker but I'm honestly a little nervous for him. As a teen I had a really bad time doing Air Force cadets for around a year. They wasted my time, treated me like shit for no discernible reason, things like that. In hindsight that program looks like little more than an opportunity for teenagers to bully younger teens and LARP around. My understanding (based on what I've heard online) is that a fair number of ADF members look down on people who went through cadets anyway. Sorry for the blog. Anyway, what you've said is pretty reassuring.

If you're in IT, why don't you go into military IT or whatever, even as a civilian?

I had to do the MEPS last week. I have interviews for jobs at Fort Meade and Fort Meyer for army starting off at E-6 Pay Grade. I had to take the ASVAB and scored in the 97 percentile (I'd fucking hope so with a Masters), but that doesn't determine the job in my case. Luckily the military pays for my flights and hotel for the interviews.

A reminder that none of you role-playing mercenaries are actually fighting for your country.

more on this please

24, econ degree but shit gpa of 2.7. I'm looking into CTN. I'm studying network security and basic network things. I got an ASVAB score of 89 at the recruiters but i think i might be getting rused

also thinking of army intel, if anyone wants to talk about that for me
