As someone who hates negatives, I think doing sets of 2 until you eventually hit sets of 3 will also do just fine.

Yes just keep trying. Try to do like 50 pushups total, it's ok if you fail sets just try and try and try thing that's how bodyweight works man.

Here's what you actually do and what worked for me.

i've been training body weight all my life and was pretty godlike in my teens when i could spend every last ounce of energy training. you not going to ever seriously injure yourself bodyweight unless you go full retard. so you just want to train to failure then try a little harder.
