Train for strength.
Slow and steady, you need 5 sets of 5 reps with proper form.

Nobody gives a shit how much you lift at the gym, you just need to keep going, eat well (no soda is the first step) and sleep well.
The rest comes slowly.

I started benching only the bar when I started StrongLifts.
1 year later, I can bench 100kg for 2-3 reps and it could be more if I didn't fuck around for 2 months, not hitting the gym and playing games all night long instead of sleeping.

If you're fat just eat at maintenance or a deficit with high protein. Fatties do not need extra calories from food as energy. That's what fat is used for.
