Playing sports is more about being in shape and stronger than you should be when you start lifting. You're also used to using your body in productive ways and more than likely have used weights to get somewhere in your sporting career.
It's not about adding magic muscle you could never achieve 10 years after stopping. It's about going into it stronger and more in tune with your body.
For example, a person who's never squatted before will be at a disadvantage against someone who's never squatted before, but played soccer for 10 years as a kid to teen.
That's ignoring the fact that you might eat more and better to make your body healthier and bigger to fuel your needs for energy. As opposed to the chip eating atrophied teen until he hits 20.

It does. You are likely to have a more anabolic endocrine system and better muscle recruitment. I lifted normally on SS coming off of sedentary skinnfat lifestyle. I did nothing but cardio through boxing for a year and some calisthenics and my lifts are pretty much the same coming back. I know muscle memory and what not, but now it feels like I will fly past old PRs in a few months time.
