personally I get the whole bird.
I stock up when costco or the grocery store have a $.69/lb sale.

From a 6lb bird you get about 3.5lbs of meat. and usually the gizzards too.

I cook them in the crockpot on top of some foil balls to allow them to drain and then place them in the oven for a while to crisp up the skin. Remove all the meat, separating the breast and dark meat. The girlfriend and dogs fight over the skin.

The bones get tossed back into the crock with carrots, celery, garlic, salt, pepper, and whatever else sounds good and covered in boiling water and some vinegar. Left on high overnight. Filter the stock.

About half the stock is used to make a bunch of chicken stew loaded with veggies using the dark meat. The other half is frozen for later.
