Pretty much exclusively use it for calf raises.

In the long run, it very much is, because it'll train their muscles to be able to exert force on a bar much greater than they're able to stabilize on their own without the help of a smith machine.I guarantee you you can bench press/squat 10% more with a smith machine because the stabilization aspect is removed from the equation. Now imagine prolonged training that way so that the stabilizers fall further behind. It's a great way to hurt yourself.
