you can go on standby and get flights for free. So can your family. But you may not get on the plane. It's a bit of a toss up. But flights out to Thailand aren't usually 100% full in my experience, so it's likely you get on.

Sounds like it makes sense but honestly I don't know what goes on behind the scenes. I can only say that I've never had to pay for a night after the first.
