Elves are often described as being a race in decline, yet they still are usually presented as being the equals of the other races in most respects. So logically the point they're declining FROM must be a point of superiority to the other races.
Which made me think, what would an elven civilization at it's prime be like, socially, technologically, and magically?
What role would the other races play in a world where the elves are in fact every bit better than them than they think they are?

Depends on the elves.

If they're good they'd probably leave the other races to their own devices and not interfere with them.

They might teach humans the art of war and magic so that they could help fend off goblins or whatever threat is present in the world. The same way the high elves did in Warhammer.

If they're evil on the other hand they'd probably just enslave humans and the lesser races like we did with africans.

Then the elves would have a civil war after which the human slaves would be freed and commit heinous crimes in elven lands stealing and raping elven women.

Come to think of it. There are lots of similarities between white people and elves in the real world. Both are civilisations in decline. Their numbers are dwindling and they're set to be extinct in the near future.

Make them Predecessors. They are declining because of changing climate, much less suitable for them than before. Climate changed because of elves' own ecological fuck-up, that also allowed other races to prosper...

Women's breasts haven been getting bigger at an astonishing rate in recent years.
One theory is that women are experiencing drastically increased oestrogen levels. Pregnancy and breastfeeding help to manage levels of oestrogen, so the more kids you have the more reasonable your proportions are, and women nowadays holding off on having kids till later in life, and having less of them, could , at least in part, explain why they're getting bustier.
If we apply this logic to elves, then elves in their prime wouldn't need to have as many kids compared to elves on the decline who would be trying to have as many kids as possible, and therefore elves in their prime would look more like anime elves, while elves in decline would look more like western elves.

They're close enough that in a lot of setting the two can have non-sterile children, so there is no reason it can't apply to them.

You're forgetting the better health and nutrition that people are getting. That plays a huge factor in the bodily development of an individual, especially in puberty when breast size and other such things are set.

Elves are often a magical species descended from fey, and thus not beholden to genetics. They can interbreed with humans because their souls are close enough to produce a child. Or in other words, it depends on setting.

People should really stop trying on the subject of Elves.

If we go by the Forgotten Realms, then at their prime they have magics capable of reshaping the entire world, rending entire continents, devastating ecosystems, and altering comets. Technologically they have airships, weapons capable of destroying allegedly immortal beings, and prisons capable of holding extraplanar beings without issue. Socially they are very much like any empire that is too big for its britches and treat other races as second class citizens.

Which is funny because part of the reason the great elven empire fell in that setting was due to them getting more progressive, letting other races in to their innermost cities, and teaching them magic, leading to a human wizard who in his lol-so-random experimenting broke the prison that contained the most powerful yugoloths that the empire had ever encountered.

As the user earlier said, Tolkien's elves. They are just naturally better than everybody else, so they are the movers and shakers of the world while the rest are just along for the ride.

I've always liked the Iron kingdoms interpretation, they are in decline because humans supposedly mortally wounded their goddess.

So equally, it is possible that elven race faced long stagnation and younger races have cathead up to them in therms of development.

No no NO!

That's a mistranslation - Elves are actually a race *on an incline*.

It's the weirdest thing, no matter how flat the surface an elf is resting on, they always seem slightly tilted This is probably most notable in how anything hanging from an elf eventually comes to rest slight off from the direct vertical, so hair, jewelry etc... all hangs slightly off what it should be.

This is also why they suck a bit at complex technology - a lot of advanced technology and science relies on the use or integration of pendulums and balanced weights, which always go awry when an elf goes near them.

Now it all makes sense

The Euro nations in general have a decreasing population that is being offset only mildly by immigrants but this is more due to economics than anything.

Of course an elder race would have traits derived from non-euclidean geometry.
