Have you ever played a character with views and beliefs radically different than your own?

How did it work out, and how did you feel coming away from the experience?

>Have you ever played a character with views and beliefs radically different than your own?
Stupid bait picture aside, I'd be seriously concerned if I was gaming with any experienced player who hadn't. It's almost the whole point.

>Stupid bait picture aside

How is it stupid bait? It's implicatory that you might roleplay as something like a Klansman even if you don't believe in that sort of thing.

You're implying that not every white man is a racist and a misogynist to boot.
And that's wrong you little shit.

There's a lot of white nationalist alt-right shit on Veeky Forums these days, it's pretty hard to take a Klan pic at face value. Gone are the days when we could be charmed by a thread of escaped slaves racing to page 10.

I think a whole lot of people role play super racists characters. I.E. Elves hate dwarves vise versa. Dont think most people have a blood vendetta against any particular race irl.

>It's almost the whole point
I don't play to have the opportunity to live as someone else, I play to live as a better version of myself in a more interesting world

I once played a guardsman who was okay with xenos. I got blackout drunk afterwards from shame.

Now and then I'll play a character who is an incredibly kind, compassionate person, just harbours a great amount of prejudice for a race or something. Racism and stuff appears in people you love too, and it makes for great RP when it comes up in a game.

I'm playing a Skaven from Clan Pestilens. So, yes.

No there's not. There's a lot of SJWs being their usual hysteric selves over the absolute inevitability of president Trump and accusing people of being "alt-right" left and right. But we're accostumed to fascists here so no biggie.

Here's your (you) btw. Pic related.

Commit suicide then. You'll never be as happy as your Mary Sues.

>Have you ever played a character with views and beliefs radically different than your own?
Yes, cant remember what though.

Was done comically though.

If you aren't as happy as your character while roleplaying, you aren't roleplaying enough

You seem to be unable to tell the difference between playing a role and a psychotic episode.

absolutely, and it was both fun and a good exercise

I've been here for edging on 9 years now, user.

I always have something in common with any character I play. I once tried to play a comprehesive, patient, compasionate character and holy shit I won't repeat it with my current group. I blew all my spells holding an enemy and they stood there doing nothing because said enemy was obviously important to the plot and we shouldn't harm it.
Tfw your current character has 7 to charisma and is the face of the group, despite having a bard, because autismo.

A Mariesue isn't the same as a self-insert, you summerfag

Oh lordy.
>have a player who is actually autistic
>the group tries to socialize him and expand his comfort zone
>starting up a heavy RP campaign
>previous games have been number-crunching where he unsurprisingly min-maxes the whole time
>he picks a bard
>ohboyherewego.jpg
>day 1
>attempts to give a street performance
>forgot to write jokes
>GM is a good sport about it
>throws an NPC bard at him that actually has jokes and steals the show
>day 2
>party bard attempts another performance
>looked up D&D jokes on some forums this time
>most are just template jokes modified for D&D
>GM rolls with it, lets the crowd react favorably to some of them
>the NPC bard shows up again and shits on him
>turns out the NPC bard's show was immediately after the party bard's
>he's making out like a bandit with the crowd while our bard drinks himself into oblivion
>day 3
>the bard is dragged into a bar fight that culminates in rescuing a little girl from a sacrificial cult
>day 4
>our bard gives a comedy show akin to Andy Kaufman, but unintentionally
>the NPC bard rolls poorly and takes him on as an opening act, thinking it intentional
>our burly, bearded GM is attempted to teach our lanky autist how to tell stories, since jokes didn't work at all

Hilariously, he's a better decision maker than some of the non-autist players. You know that "autism is a super-power" image? That's him.

Butt hurt or bait, I can't tell anymore.

Yeah.
Fine, it was just a game of v:tm, my friends gave me some weird looks but its not like anything life changing happened.

I wouldn't say "radically" different, but I often play characters who are religious (and i'm not) or have different sexualities. Even playing a different gender on it's own is enough for a good experience in my book.

I'd have to say one of my most successful characters that I role-played was my goody good Paladin that sacrificed himself in place of another party member, and came back (divine intervention) as a Paladin/Inquisitor but much more chaotic good.

Mate.

That's too much chan even if you're joking.

Just leave. It's for your health.

But what if the situation is a Trans Female of Colour playing a Klansman?
Your assumption that all gamers are cis het male Caucasians marginalizes members of the diverse gaming community and upholds stereotypes that prevent diversification.

...

what a stupid fucking narcissistic thing to say

Yes, I occasionally play heroic characters who consider life to be sacred and willingly risk their lives to save others.

I enjoy the idea of paladins but I am not a man of faith myself. I find the idea of having faith to be fascinating since I did not grow up in a religious home and I enjoy reading about faiths enough to have considered majoring in theology at one point.

I think it is fun to imagine not only have faith but having enough of it to wield it as a weapon to lay the smack down on evil.

I tried to make an extremely xenophobic human shadowrunner (Aka he's racist towards metahumans)

As expected it was a huge pain in the ass and everyone in my party hated my character because he'd refuse to work for metahuman contacts, wouldn't help metahuman group members, ect.

Unsurprisingly when he finally did find himself in trouble the rest of the group left him for dead. I wouldn't really recommend making a character like that unless everyone else in the group is on board.

I'm not joking, but it's pretty clear you don't have anything like the same experience of Veeky Forums as I do. By which I don't mean time, but just the content and experience of the threads you post in.

Even today there are comfy, informative and friendly threads here. And ofc /sp/ is a treasure.

this makes me want to play a full on /pol/ campaign where the nazis are the good guys.

I've always kind of wanted to play nazis from Reich-5 in GURPS. Either the dimension-traveling turbo-nazis or regular softened nazis from elsewhere in the world.
Don't know who'd run that tastefully or interestingly, though.

Me too. Actually i think i came here on Veeky Forums the first time in 2005 but who could remember by now? I don't even remember when this fucking board was founded. It was due to furry fridays on /b/ that caused warhammer wednesdays...
It's so far away now, my memory is fading... All i can remember is...
I'M angry, user. I'M ANGRY FOR ELVES BUT I CAN'T REMEMBER WHY!
KILL ME user! FREE ME FROM THIS HELL!

/pol/ has its own mythology now with an entire religion dedicated to Kek among other nonsense, that might work better than you can think

I once played as a nazi doctor in a d20 Modern game. Pretty much the only reason I wasn't immediately booted as because I didn't goose-step into the role shouting HEIL HITLER. In fact the party didn't clue in until a few hours in where I refused to help a group of people because they were "beneath us", and then the one black character finally clued in that I was being a dick to him because I was playing a fascist and not because our character's personalities clashed.

Apparently that group loved it and still brings that character up on occasion.

Yes, The original usare of the name "Mary Sue" refers to a parody of self insert characters. The fact that she was also allways right and beloved by all doesn't make her any less a parody of self inserts.
You should know wtf you're saying before "summer"ing your betters, you little shit.

>Once played a liberal druid
>Befriended the orcish tribe
>Pursaded Paladin, Cleric and Mage to let them in to the city
>The destroyed the town
>Maintain it was not their fault, they were provoked.
>Will now starve

One time I played a pair of gay lovers. I didn't tell anybody in the party about it, not even the GM, and I ended up making the campaign revolve around us getting a special flower to cure my boyfriend's leprosy so we could fuck like normal again.

>This thread
Guys, stop getting baited this hard.
You came in here to enjoy the conversation, right?
Well if you're not enjoying it, try gitting gud.

>Have you ever played a character with views and beliefs radically different than your own?
Yes. But, I honestly couldn't get into them at some points, because I had literally 0 experience with those feelz/personality structures, and I couldn't emulate them correctly.
I came away from the experience knowing that I have my limits, and that I really don't know how to play some types of characters.

No because I enjoy my beliefs and line up quite nicely to OPs pic.

Escapism is G A Y.

Yeah. I'm unbeliever myself.
It worked fine. Everything feels a lot more simple when you have set of guidelines you can be 100% adamant about.

>I don't know how words work

So the only reason you're not speaking Chaucerian English is that you're incapable of understanding it?
Top kek faggot

Won't work. You'll >imply some bluepilled shit, like the Crematorium being used on living people, intentional mass deaths (rather than deaths due to starvation), Gas chambers being used to kill people rather than killing lice, making the war about Racial Purity rather than nationalism, implying the Jews are innocent and forgetting their connection to communism, or ignoring the role of the Banks in the whole thing. Protip: The Banks pretty much started and caused the war.

If you take historically accurate Nazis, then their actions make perfect moral sense, in that they're defending their own nation and their own people against parasites that want to flood their nation with marxism and strangle it with debt repayments.

>Error: you are temporarily blocked from posting for violating Veeky Forums 1- Off-Topic, Traditional Games Only
>All the [Deleted]s and (Dead)s
Trying to use censorship to force your marxist shit, eh? Not gonna work. /pol/ stays in Veeky Forums.
Be nice if I could figure out which janitor is doing this. Because it's been happening consistently over the last few days.

It's called a historical campaign.

I try to deviate from myself as much as I can. Last character was a control freak droid, and the one before that a young adult woman with anxiety issues in the army. Both were tons of fun.
However, I still have a hard time playing non "lawful" characters.

Nowadays I use bits from a generator based on rpg.ashami.com/ to build my characters; it helps creating unusual people.

>better version of myself.
I don't think that not being able to completely differenciate between your characters and yourself is a good thing.

Hi /pol/
Hi anti-/pol/

I knew I should've started this thread with a different image. Now we can't even talk about anything since we're getting crapped on by le unpaid hotpockets man.

I really don't think it is /pol/, I think its just a sign of the times the push back against the SJW stuff we have all bemoaned.

But isn't pushing back against the [politics thing] what /pol/ is all about?

It is yeah, but it ties in with the rise of anti-establishment thoughts all over the Western World. We've hit a tipping point and people are tired of being told how to think and act, however subtle and minor it might be.

Look at the LGBTfagbait on youtube yesterday. It got crushed, what began as a raid exploded in to a full societal condemnation of rubbing it in peoples faces.

That and of course finding (((coincidences))).
Though point out that the Rockefellers, Habsburgs and Medicis were non-jews and watch /pol/ go into internal conflict. Honestly if you ask me, it's banks that are the evil.

If you ask me, the State is evil and it's influence should be kept to a minimum.

The Youtube video was a data collection ploy, to train Youtube's anti-spam bots to identify and shadowban "hate speech". It worked perfectly well for its intended purpose.

I doubt it's anti-establishment, unless you count an idea as the establishment.

Though it really is a testament to the power of the Internet to connect people, that now anyone on any side of an issue can get organised.
That must be why Facebook, Twitter, Twitch.tv, Reddit, Le unpaid jannymans, and now Youtube are working so hard to control what gets sent over social networking.

Careful senpai. A managing/controlling entity, by any other name, still counts as the State.
Plus, have you noticed how nowadays, we don't even need the State to shit on people's rights? People in the world are actively fighting against their own rights, as all the anti-free-speech protests and the various internet zergrushes against badwrongthinkers will tell you.

Hell, even on Veeky Forums, you can't make a minmaxed optimised dungeon crawler without someone telling you that you're having badwrongfun.

>I doubt it's anti-establishment, unless you count an idea as the establishment.

Not the guy, but I think it does. We are being told by all outlets that we must accept this, we must agree with that, we must make room, we must think this way about these. It is all from the center of power, Government.

>Plus, have you noticed how nowadays, we don't even need the State to shit on people's rights? People in the world are actively fighting against their own rights, as all the anti-free-speech protests and the various internet zergrushes against badwrongthinkers will tell you.
And they learned this while being State educated, by teachers paid for and selected by the State, the circulum is dictated by the State. What others see as free enterprise are typically owned and operated by the State.

Free enterprise and free speech is a beautiful thing, they both include the right to do things in your own self interest.

Once as GM, my main big bad was a Oswald Mosley styled Fascist complete with a lightning bolt flag in a early Industrial Age setting. He and his followers promoted brotherhood between humans and practiced a way of life where they rejected the whims of magic and destiny in favor of the cold hard iron of technology and self-determination. They embodied what I would call "good" in Hitler's early regime. But at the same time, they also held very racist views against the local non-humans and even some of the darker skinned men.

I mean sure some of their views were valid like "all teh Orcs are stupid," or "Furries are gross," and Oswald was just clearly stating a fact when he yelled "all Elves are sluts!" It was a rather amusing experience in which I look back at fondly, though I do cringe at how well I seemed to portray a Fascist dictator. Though any ambiguity found in the Blackshirt political movement fell to the wayside after he went after That Guy's rip offs of Dipper and Mabel (complete with Pinecest, goddamn the Furries were one thing).

Disclaimer: I've always held a interest in Fascist political movements and the states they've created but I'm a Libertarian and find Hitler and Tojo despicable. Though I do find El Duce amusing, and consider Mosley the best prime minister Britain never had.

I suppose so. I love the idea behind Paladins, men driven by a higher calling that is bigger than them, yet this only drives them harder. That's not me at all, and I wonder if it's the romanticised nature of Paladins that draws me to them.

>Disclaimer: I've always held a interest in Fascist political movements and the states they've created but I'm a Libertarian and find Hitler and Tojo despicable. Though I do find El Duce amusing, and consider Mosley the best prime minister Britain never had.

>Libertarian
>Plz explain in bullet points what this word means to you, beyond legalize weed.

>Consider Mosley the best prime minister Britain never had.
>Calls himself a Libertarian

>Oswald Mosley
>Opposed free trade
>Wanted Single-European state
>State owned industry
>Approved of Communism
>Strongly approved of the State

Oswald Mosley was never Prime MInster of the UK. He wanted his own unique brand of Facism/Communism for the UK.

>Mosley the best prime minister Britain never had.
>never

I have always thought about running a game with heavy themes of Afro-Mysticism. The pygmy WHFRP where it turns out that the temple was a space ship and they came from space is a good example.

Well whoops, overshot there. Other point still stands, calls himself a libertarian but espouses an extreme liberty-limiting form of government as the best thing we never got.

Why not go full nationalism and prevent those who have never fought from holding a vote? Sure you can not appreciate full liberty when you have seen first hand a country without it.

>and even some of the darker skinned men.
You dropped the ball

Kinda edgy

I played a Witch Hunter who was a super goody toeshoes would even let scumbag slavers go free as long as they confessed there sins. Only being a Witch Hunter I had a zero tolerant policy due to an oath I had to take to be a Witch Hunter. I never gave any magic users mercy and the GM knew this so he decided to test me to see how far I would he had a sort of grudge against me but whatcha gonna do. One time we came across a village that had reports of supposedly having a witch hiding in its ranks. Though investigation we found out the entire village were magic users themselves only they used nature magic for healing and spiritual purposes. The GM convinced my group to have me call the shots since we found the original witch but I thought the other magic users were probably consorting with her so I called for an all out witch hunt. We gather most of the village to a nearby barn and herded them into it. The GM made it vivid of all the children and women who were in the village at this time the witch revealed herself and we fought my party came out victorious after fighting the creature she turned into. After that the GM said these words to me "user you and your party have slain the person you sought but your mission still remains will you do what you took an oath to do? Or will you break it what kind of a Witch hunter only hunts some witches? So I made a choice I decided to burn the barn down will the villagers inside to say the least my group were horrified

To this day I do not know if I made the right choice or not

THOSE FUCKING WEAK KNEED, KNIFE EARED, FLOWER PICKING PANSIES DESERVE IT AND YOU KNOW IT!

BY MY FATHER'S BEARD, MY CLAN WILL HAVE JUSTICE.

I absolutely positively LOVE playing religious zealots of all kinds absolutely unironically. Kinda like this guy here Underrated post.

>And they learned this while being State educated, by teachers paid for and selected by the State, the circulum is dictated by the State.
I teach in a state uni in a literal socialist dictatorship. The State couldn't give half a fuck about our curriculum as long as it has a mandatory set of subjects (most of which are technical anyway, so I don't see how they could be used to teach people to hate themselves). I can read them however I like and nobody will give a shit. My colleague from another department uses his Pedagogy lectures to do literally nothing but cultivate opposition to the government among students. The only result is that he achieves lowest student attendance record, since out youth is apolitical as fuck and would prefer doing absolutely anything else to listening how our Eternal President fucks up the national identity.

That doesn't really fit your le State brainwashing concept. The only real agenda government has concerning our material are the constant attempts to cut it down so we'd have less hours, so it could pay us less.

Truth is - people largely don't know what exactly do they want, and how they should get it, so popular movements are largely doomed to be as efficient at achieving something nice as epileptic seizures.

Back to /pol/, user

A lot of my characters are religious in some way. Either overly, for practical reasons, or passively. Believing as a part of their character.

It's because I wish I had religion in my real life, I think.

I played a transwoman one time.

I usually play my characters more as avatars than personas. I'm more interested in having interesting decisions and making them as a rational actor.

To some extent I end up playing less like my real self, since my real self is concerned with all kinds of shit without quantifiable reward. Being a good person, love, family, a career I can be proud of. But I don't know if it's the point of how I play so much as a byproduct.

Shut the fuck up, Marche.

You remind me of a friend from high school. Super liberal atheist IRL, but always playing the conservative paladin types. And not as an asinine parody either. Certainty has its appeal.

I'm an atheist centrist in reality, but I've always enjoyed playing religious figures- sometimes extremists, others more noble and heroic. It's fun to embrace the zeal and conviction that I would normally lack.

Call me retarded, but with the way this board has been headed as of late I can tell if this is the most obvious bait in existence or a sincere post.

What happened to this place?

Oh, and one more thing.
>selected by the State
I can only speak for our little dictatorship, but the only thing you need to teach at college is a diploma, and perhaps a lack of serious (like, murder and above) criminal record, as most deans bear a strong allergy to prison culture. Other than that, there is pretty much no selection process. You come and they take you, since academic departments are permanently understaffed due to shit pay. You can then proceed to read any sort of political bullshit, which the students won't hear anyway, as they proceed to get their own fucked up ideologies developing from their personal complexes, peer pressure and whatever is most popular right now on the social networks. The only level on which ze State is concerned, is the level where it creates the entire context of noone giving a shit. And it manages to achieve that without actually trying, on nothing but good ol' bureaucracy and incompetence. And once that is achieved, there are no more agendas to push, as total lack of social interest in actual local political processes already ensures that the State is secure for decades to come.

Overall, it works according to a saying in our language - "World is ruled not by a secret lodge, but by a plain mess".

Yeah you definitely did the objectively ethically wrong thing you fucking retard, how is that even a dilemma for you? Is your IQ like...90?

Dunno. I think what he did is totally ok. Magic users are not to be tolerated in any sane society, after all.

>Murdering a town by fire
>Said down wasn't doing anything wrong
>Right thing
You're an idiot.

Don't worry, it was magic, that way moral consequences can be handwaved. I am sure that the witch hunter had the blessing of one of the setting's dieties too.

...

Suffer not the witch to live

He doesn't know whether it would be right or wrong from his character's point of view.

>Said down wasn't doing anything wrong
They were using magic.

Plus, whatever government that is currently in the power in his setting seemingly has enough support and jurisdiction to allow for an institute of witch hunting, which in turn allows

Dammit misclick
>which in turn allows...
... oaths to spare no magic users, which strongly implies that local society has a strong enough prejudice against magic users to allow their extermination, which makes it ethically questionable at best, and more probably totes right.

This, it really depends on the setting. For wall we know the game that guy is playing is WHFB, and magic users have the chance of accidentally bringing out demons, making them a danger to society as a whole.
