Has anybody ever given you shit for not liking stereotypical nerd stuff?

Has anybody ever given you shit for not liking stereotypical nerd stuff?

>I don't think Star Wars is that great.
>[Unintelligible rage]

Yeah, I briefly lived with a guy who was really into memes. And he'd get really smug when I didn't know what the hell he was talking about.
For context, I had been living on another continent for the previous five years. I didn't spend those five years living on the internet like he did.

I can always guarantee a two hour shit fest out of my group by stating my opinion that the prequals were better than the original trilogy. Which is an undeniable truth.

Not really.

I can not really stand Star Trek and no one really gives me shit about it.

Have you tried meeting real human beings and not just hanging out on Veeky Forums looking for reactions?

I would only agree to this as a setting for a game.

Games during the rebellion are shit and should never be the norm.

Was talking with some guys at the table and the topic of Final Fantasy came up. Guy said he liked FF7 and FF10. Okay, whatever. I said I liked FF6. He then proceeded to tell me FF6 sucked. I'd never given someone such a dirty look before in my life.

Most average people don't like Star Trek.

Prepare for more disgust.

I have had the chance to play every single FF game to come out, with offers from some friends to give me the games or even system if I needed them. I have one of the new games here in the house that I was given as a gift and never opened. I have never played a FF game outside a store demo when the original xbox came out.

I most likely will never play them because I just feel no reason to. I heard them years ago about what all went into them, someone tried to get me to watch a movie tie in and I just could not care less.

Yes, but I've also had the guy who loudly proclaims how much he dislikes some stereotypical nerd thing, even when it's not the subject of discussion.

>Man, I don't like anime
>I just don't get why people like animated stuff
>Can we not watch this anime movie? I don't like anime
It's a fucking medium, mate, not a genre. There's common elements, sure, but it's like saying you don't like American filmmaking, it's almost meaningless.

To be fair, FF6 did kind of suck.

Pretty sure everyone has.
Nerds, despite their ostricazation from normal culture, aren't really any better about ostracizing people then anyone else.
Actually I've seen plenty of evidence to support the idea that they're WORSE then most people, siezing chances to alienate and insult people who like something different as if punishing an unrelated person for how they perceive themselves to be seen by everyone else, sort of like victims of siege mentality for whom everyone who is not with them is the "enemy" regardless of how even relevant to anything they are at all.

Nah that's fine. Trying to get into something new can be a drag.

No, it really didn't. FF7 was mediocre as shit and FF10 sucked, but FF6 was great. Don't be a cunt.

I'm a big fan of TNG, but I can't really stand most of the other serieses, and everyone gives me shit for not liking the original one

I watched like 5 episodes of the one with the captain who is on ncis now and decided not to get into it that much.

Got worse when I saw the episodes with Patrick Stewart and the new movies just shot all interest in it for me. The only ones involving Shatner I saw were two of the movies, Wrath of Khan and the one about the whales.

What reasoning could you have for that? The prequels have a factually weaker story. Not to say that the original trilogy were the pinnacle of storytelling, they were far from it, but they made logical sense in an A to B fashion that the prequels failed to do.

What you watched was Enterprise, and it is nigh universally considered one of if not THE worst trek series. So...

Ah, hello there /co/.

Not that user, but I'd say FF6 was great in the story department, but in the gameplay department it was really hot garbage. It's like they made no attempt to balance the abilities against each other at all. Why bother with black magic when Edgar gets an at-will attack that hits all enemies with enough damage to one-shot most early-game grunts?

Gameplay-wise, the best of the classic Final Fantasies was V. The popularity of the four job fiesta can attest that.

Every time I say I like John Wick's games. They're not perfect, but I've spent less time fixing the rules than I have with D20 stuff.

You have okay tastes. I can certainly see arguments both way, but I think you're closer to correct than most.

I've never read the lotr books, and I have no intention to. Apparently that invalidates my enjoyment of everything fantasy and nerdy.

My main argument is basically what said. The setting is just better. It's more sci-fi, which is understandable since the origionals didn't have cgi to play with. The Clone Wars era feels like a complete living world while the original trilogy was just basically a hero overcoming the evil story, which does not interest me as much.

And Gungans are way better than Ewoks.

This reminds me of when Veeky Forums gave me shit for not knowing the significance of an hero.
I mean, I don't care, it's fucking Veeky Forums, I could "handle the bantz" or whatever, but being smug over someone else not knowing a trivial internet meme referenced by a one letter grammar error is just laughable.

It meant you were a rotten newfag. Jesus Christ, have some decency.

>I can always guarantee a two hour shit fest out of my group by stating my opinion that the prequals were better than the original trilogy.
I can totally see that.
The shit fest that is.
I found the prequels decidedly lacking in scoundrels for my tastes.

Fuck off. Not even /co/ is that retarded. Not on purpose anyway.

I really hate the overuse of zombies in pop culture. I always tell people that zombies are just a crutch to avoid writing an antagonist and they always get violently angry with me when I say that.

Constantly. Take away the label and the support network and unintelligible rage and BO is basically all geeks are. And I never made "being a geek" part of my personal identity, nor do I care to keep close friends with geeks exclusively. When they get all pissy and claim I'm "not a real geek" I'm more relieved than anything. I'm just a "normal" person who happens to know all the subjects they've dedicated inordinate amounts of time and effort to better than them. It's a classification that affords me the best of both worlds.

Not Veeky Forums related (not that this blog thread is either), but I had someone lose their shit on me for not liking Sword Art Online. Which isn't entirely the case, I said the story was garbage and clearly written by a teenager, but the production values were decent. Of course, this being the [current year], disliking one aspect means that you dislike something wholesale, even if you say otherwise.

This, lurk more faggot.

That's called being stuck up, and it just makes you an asshole.

>I had someone lose their shit on me for not liking Sword Art Online.
are you fucking kidding me

At least you've found a way to feel better than someone else, and that's all that counts.

>basically a hero overcoming the evil story
mate, that's literally every. singly. star wars movie's plot.

Most people don't know what Star Trek is.

>It's a fucking medium, mate, not a genre.
You reminded me of this story.

>I'm surprised that people get upset when I say their favorite x is shit and push my hot opinions like they're gospel irl.

but anakin became the evil?

I don't like 40k.
I don't like Star Trek.
I don't like Lord of The Rings.
Pre Sith Star Wars is okay, the rest I don't care for.

The looks on people's faces when I say that Firefly is just another cheesy scifi space opera and doesn't need a second season are amazing.

I also believe in this too.

The only major sci-fi franchise I like is Dune.

But you're right.
I think it is pretty good, but the movie resolved enough of the hanging plot threads that there is no need for any more

I don't like Harry Potter
I don't like Pokemon
I don't like Star Trek

Normies are the worst. Especially the "I'm so nerdy xD tee hee" kind

The thing about Star Trek is that every series has some aspect of it that is so bad that no one can rationally claim it didn't suck a little.
I love TNG and DS9 and their early seasons are just painful.

watch the end of the sixth movie mate.

Bazinga

never seen Firefly, have no interests in doing so, might even have less now that people are pushing it onto each other.

It's not really that they push it on people, there's just a giant cult circlejerk about how it's THE BEST SHOW EVER and got cancelled before its time was up, even though that happened almost 15 years ago.

>I really hate the overuse of zombies in pop culture.
A very valid opinion.

>I always tell people that zombies are just a crutch to avoid writing an antagonist
You're always wrong and likely resorting to spouting a predecided opinion rather than actually discussing this with anyone.
Pro tip: "alternative to" /= "crutch to avoid"

Boy, you guys sure are the Redgrin Grumboldt of calling out newfags, good work!

Calling out? That's just genuine advice man, it spares the uninitiated embarrassment when they make a social faux pas.

hey i can talk about things that went wrong or didn't happen ages ago too but i don't push it onto people and i've learned to let go.

>hate star wars
>hate firefly
>hate Magic the gathering
>everybody at my local game shop knows this
>get into arguments all the time

If you're the one who said "lurk more, faggot", that's a good point, my bad.
I still don't consider asking for an explanation of an unintelligible word salad to be a faux pas though.
>yahooseriousfestival.jpg

Sort of. I'm not a fan of mecha anime, but I would eagerly play the sort of tabletop RPG where I can create and/or customize every aspect of a giant robot and go on sweet tank-stomping mecha combat missions on the ground or in space.

I just don't want the kind of hot-blooded "I can do it because I believe in friendship" type stuff that mecha anime seems to push all the time. I want down-and-dirty gearhead greasemonkey blueprints stat point juggling mecha gaming.

Apparently that makes me a gigantic faggot, but given the way some of these people act, I'm okay with sucking some dick if it means I don't have to interact with them.

I hate Zombies because in reality they are either going to be no real threat at all or we are all so fucked you might as well just kill yourself to end the suffering. I don't see a way you can do something where the zombies are able to spread rapidly enough to take over the planet and yet not infect every one. Especially considering most types of zombies are mindless.

>has anyone ever met someone that liked a thing they did not.

Yes.

What made Firefly so unique among scifi space operas was the fact that it was arguably the best space Western space opera made in a generation of TV. I really can't think of any other film that combines the themes of high technology and the boundlesses of interstellar travel and the lawlessness and romance of the wild west. The cast was very well done for TV show of the genre, it's a pity Fox just dropped them after one season.

>hey i can talk about things that went wrong or didn't happen ages ago too but i don't push it onto people and i've learned to let go.
As a card carrying member of the said circlejerk cult, I agree.
Pushing shit onto the unwilling is crap.
I enjoy my circlejerking cult and I encourage you to join if there's a chance you'll enjoy yourself, but I won't push you in.

That said, I tricked my dad into watching the first episode of Breaking Bad.

This.

I was at a store today, waiting in a long line. There was an old man in front of me. He looked back, as we had been in line for about 5 minutes now, and spoke to me.

You like baseball?

I don't know why he asked, but I said no.

He simply said that was fine, and asked if I liked camping. I do, so we talked about camping until he checked out.

People only get upset when you don't like something they do if they have invested themselves a great deal into that thing. Nerds love to invest their entire soul into anime or sonic oc or whatever, so they sperg when someone else doesn't like it.

let's differentiate mecha as mechs shaped like people and just mech, which is a bipedal tank.
mecha is shit. mechs on the other hand is more reasonable and much more serious.
altho a regular tank beats mech(a)s every day.

To be quite fair the vast majority of animes fall into maybe three or four genres anymore. Shonen/magical girls, moe, awkward-guy harem and whichever one is targeted towards adolescent/teenage girls.

I enjoy some animes but Japanese animation studios are basically terrified of moving away from the standard money maker genres so to me the vast majority of actual anime does seem like effectively the same shit. Even series I really enjoyed at first dissolve into the aforementioned after one season.
>I don't want to watch a series of individual battles where dialogue literally interrupts world-defining confrontations.

>I don't want to watch /r9k/ stumble about spewing spaghetti in a NEET's ideal fantasy land.

>I don't care about uguu girls doing nothing all day.

But the thing that kills most anime for me is that there are seemingly only 10 characters with recolors in every one of them. Harem is the most guilty of it with copy-paste characters with different hair.
>Busty shy girl
>rough tomboy
>tsundere girl
>quiet childhood friend
>too young hyperactive girl who already says she's married to main character
>creepy possibly yandere girl
>too smart nerd character who may or may not be a turbo perv
...and that's about every harem anime girl ever, add animal ears/tails to taste.

And then I get to listen to every thread interrupted about ten posts in of who is best girl.

>what is air-borne viruses

>People only get upset when you don't like something they do if they have invested themselves a great deal into that thing. Nerds love to invest their entire soul into anime or sonic oc or whatever, so they sperg when someone else doesn't like it.

This is exactly the reason why nerds are so insufferable, and also why furries, bronies, and /pol/ are so fucking insufferable. Take away Thing They Like, and what are they? What do they have left? What percentage of their identity does not revolve around Thing They Like? The more obnoxious someone is, the smaller the percentage of their identity is left without That Thing.

I'd play a tank game too, to be honest, as long as I got freedom to customize the shit out of it and upgrade it as the game went on. I think mainly I just like the number-crunching upgrading aspect of a vehicle-centric game.

>>>/tumblr/

>Breaking Bad
a super normie show, he would probably understand it and maybe like it.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH

Nearly every time I go to my folks my mother always says "you would like that show user it's got sciency stuff and your nerdy things too and it's funny."

NO

How many air-borne viruses have spread globally and affect 50+% of the population? The only way I could see it is if it was transmitted by mosquitoes and could affect other animals as well. At which point we are all fucked so might as well just end.

stop watching shit anime, there are and have been plenty of good anime you can watch right now.

it's like saying that all the movies that are coming out now are bad and dumb, that doesn't mean that there aren't being produced good movies that you just aren't aware of.

>I hate Zombies because in reality they are either going to be no real threat at all or we are all so fucked
The Walking Dead does this well.
Once they got used to it, a handful of zombies becomes no threat unless you're careless or really unlucky.
The threat comes from other survivors and massive swarms that could rank as natural disasters.
Water can all so be described as "no real threat at all or we are all so fucked" depending on how much you have to deal with.

>you might as well just kill yourself to end the suffering.
Pussy

>I don't see a way you can do something where the zombies are able to spread rapidly enough to take over the planet and yet not infect every one.
This is because you lack imagination and/or understanding.

>i don't understand how something might happen
>therefor it can not happen

I do watch good anime. There are a few series I really enjoy.

But just like the FPS video game genre 95% is the same rehashed shit. So just like if someone brings up a FPS they immediately think CoD clones the same applies to anime as the vast majority of the market is targeted towards a specific taste.

Just specify that you want Real Mecha over Super Robots.

Have you considered Battletech or mech warrior?

See, that's a distinction I was not aware existed.

Thanks for the recommendations, will check both out. Are there best editions of either of those?

i know plenty of furries and bronies, they're just regular people with a side interest.
if you took away their furriness/broniness, they'll just do what they already do just with less fur/pony-porn.
you're generalizing the stereotypical brony and furry to something you've seen in popular media.
the same way you would think of gays as people that dress kinky and wear spandex in public, because you've seen a bad american gay pride parade.

the reality is that most furries/bronies and just regular gays don't look different than you or act different than you.
there are alot of gays out there that you would never think of as gays, the same thing applies to furries/bronies.

to take your position, i don't thing it sound be looked down upon when someone has a specialized interest, you don't look down at musicians, athletes, political figures for being defined by that one thing they're in to, why would you not apply the same logic to other interests?
if people want to be defined by something let them, it's their lives, not yours and it doesn't affect you either way.

Once people get used to the zombies why are there not whole teams of zombie hunting parties that just go out and start to retake the country? Maybe the walking dead does this I don't know I have only watched season 1 and half of 2.

You do not want to know how many animals are living in your house besides you and how easy it is for rodents and other things to get into your house. If they can be infected by the zombie virus then there is little hope you have of surviving the year. If it spread by mosquitoes or other bugs and you are not in an arctic climate you are fucked with in the week.

Can you come up with a way in which a zombie outbreak could spread quicker than we could contain it?

Fair enough! I was generalizing and talking about the most strident, obnoxious, and visible parts of those communities.

>To be quite fair the vast majority of animes fall into maybe three or four genres anymore.
I really don't think that's true.

>stop watching shit anime
This

>Food today sucks, there's such crappy selection and it's all junk food.
>Stop buying groceries at the gas station, user.

see

No idea! Battletech is all backward compatible, and mech warrior is the RPG version of Battletech. Mech warriors 4 is a free video game mech simulator which you might be able to find on the Internet.

see

>you don't look down at musicians, athletes, political figures for being defined by that one thing they're in to

Yes, I do, in fact. Fuck low-income dreamers, fuck muscleheads, fuck fucking animals in suits acting like they know what's best then taking bribes and completely disregarding even their own opinions.

Fuck everyone. Fuck the world.

>what is necromancy

Yes, yes, you're very special and unique with your shit opinion.

i'm not going to spoonfeed you, airborne viruses are a real thing, if you can't get that into your head then there is no point in talking to you.

...

If you liked Wrath of Khan and The Voyage Home, you should check out the rest of The Original Series movies. People say the odd-numbered ones suck but I tend to disagree, even though I've never been really interested in any incarnation of the show.

And then there's the reboot movies, which is fine if you like JJ Abrams and skippable if you're only interested in Sci Fi.

I know they are real but is there any air-borne virus that is spread quicker than we can contain it? Maybe this was serious 200 years ago but this day and age with our understanding of how contagions spread it is not really an issue any more. Once it is clear that a zombie infestation is happening then everything will go into lock down.

This is a good point and a solution to the problem but then you have to consider do the reanimated dead spread what ever reanimated them or does someone have to resurrect every new zombie. What happens if you kill the zombie or the person that brought them back to life? Are they intelligent or just go off of instinct?

>great in the story department, but in the gameplay department it was really hot garbage

This applies to 90% of JRPGs, and Final Fantasy is no exception - and if you can't into Japanese storytelling tropes, you'll think the stories are bad, too!

The problem is that you're thinking about them wrong. Zombies aren't an Antagonist the way Darth Vader or whoever is, they're like a force of nature that the heroes must overcome, and there may or may not be other characters that act as antagonists. It's the same thing in Cthulu mythos stories.

The necromancer raises each of them, maybe intelligent undead can too, but if he dies, since they're unintelligent undead, they stumble around until they find something to smack. They spread their undeadness by killing and dragging the corpses back to the necromancer to reanimate

You haven't suffered what I've suffered, shitheel. How can you say you love Fantasy when you won't eat her poop?

ofcourse it could happen in [current year]. you don't understand what an airborne virus is, because if you did you wouldn't say "then everything will go into lock down. "

>How many air-borne viruses have spread globally and affect 50+% of the population?
Well, the outbreak of the Spanish flu in 1918 is generally considered to be one of the worst pandemics in human history, infecting 20 to 40 percent of the world's population and killing 50 million in the span of just two years.
The active zombie virus has a 100% kill rate.
>Once people get used to the zombies why are there not whole teams of zombie hunting parties that just go out and start to retake the country?
That takes resources, planning, organization.
You build your pocket of survivors into a town, then you defend and secure sustainability of the town, maybe networking with other towns that aren't trying to kill you and take your shit.
This is where the show is now.

Then the towns might band together and secure a larger perimeter.
Meanwhile, most defences can't take a giant swarm in the first place and weather, shortages, and other diseases hit you too.

You can't just "retake the country".

I hate the preachy commie allegory of Star Trek TOS, dumb hippies get their ship taken over constantly and have to melee everything because someone painted flowers over the phaser banks and their photon torpedo tubes are packed full of weed.

I hate TNG since Picard solves all his problems by fellating the opposition. The episode where Wesley tried to show them how fucked up their stupid chain of command was is the only one I like.

I hate every RPG that came after red box D&D, it was already too complicated and they made it worse.

Every comic book hero is either a goody goody like Superman or a bad boii like Batman, it's just Superman and Batman ad nauseum. Whenever they have a more complex character like The Hulk, people can't understand it, so they have to retcon the character into one of those two tropes (aka Mr. Fixit.) Deadpool, Wolverine, Iron Man, different costume, same mary sue wish fulfillment.

I liked Star Wars when I was a kid, but they had nothing new after Empire, they just keep telling the same damn story again and again.

Your anime isn't as good as you think it is. Even Ghost In The Shell wasn't that great. The storytelling mediums it is on suck balls for that kind of story. I just watched a stupid Katherine Heigl chick flick with my wife, and it was marginally better than every anime I've seen or read, because they got a relatable story across.

Arrested Development and The Office belong up my ass with How I Met Your Mother and The World According To Jim. Firefly was a great concept without a story, Buffy was a shitty retelling of West Side Story dragged out into years of torment, X-Files wasn't worth the bother, Bab 5 was gayer than Riker in a mankini, everything british in the last twenty years was shit. LOTR should've been 2 hrs long and The Hobbit 90 minutes.

The shittier the MMO gameplay, the better it is, because you have something to bitch about, which is the only comraderie left in the goddamn world anymore.

...

>Maybe this was serious 200 years ago but this day and age with our understanding of how contagions spread it is not really an issue any more. Once it is clear that a zombie infestation is happening then everything will go into lock down.

Do you know what really keeps you safe?
Absolutely nothing.
