The future city is entirely automated. Everyone living inside is basically plugged into a matrix of their own creation, having uploaded themselves long ago.

They were advanced enough to survive whatever apocalyptic events brought everyone else back down to stone age tech, and currently all that is known by outsiders is that it's impossible to enter, defended by strange golems, and is likely the home of many powerful mages.

Several villages nearby exist to fish from the river, and retrieve the occasional bobble or trinket that leaves the city, selling it to collectors.

Many centuries ago the world was plagued by mass natural disasters as a result of global warming. Now there are only a few cities all over the world, which are glittering gems of technology and civilisation, while much of the world has regressed to a pre-industrial time, and they are kept that way by their overlords who live in the cities, and force them to work to produce the minerals and food necessary to keep these megacities running, and in return they are kept safe from the mutated animals and hostile raiders that live in the vast wates covering much of the planet.
If I ran this as an RPG (which I will do so eventually) the two big themes of the campaign would be showing the disparity between the two civilisations (the decadent luxury of the megacities compared to the abject poverty of the peasants) and the second would be both sides attempting to justify their moral positions (the peasants demand the megacities share all their technology, healthcare, and standards of living equally, while the megacities refuse to do so on the grounds that it would lead to a second collapse of civilisation as their infrastructure simply wouldn't be able to cope with the sudden influx of 10-20 times more people than it currently supports).

Let's begin with one detail in the picture: the roadsigns mext to the bridges. They are located inside the village, so they point to places inside it. Why would the inhabitants of a small village need roadsigns?

The answer is, they don't. The signs are for the benefit of outsiders. This village is a tourist location, probably as a historical reconstruction area.

If you look at the bonfire at the right, you can see the tourists taking part in some sort of theatralized performance under the lead of the guy with his hands up at the far right, probably some kind of reconstructed religious ritual. Note the tables (with tableclothes!) and souvenir stands nearby. The villagers are going to milk the tourists dry.

Note also the purple flags - there are 5 of them in a relatively small visible area, so the village must be teeming with them. I guess these are the banners of the tourist agency running the village.

On a bit unrelated note, the water being dumped from the city doesn't look like sewage ('cause the villagers are still alive). It's unlikely it's a storm drain (the village doesn't look like it rained recently), so most likely the water is from the cooling system of whatever power source the city uses.

It's clear that, despite their clear, natural color, those pipes are dumping pollutants and refuse into the main lifeblood and food source of the separated peoples. Those birds must be feeding on something, but they're much too small to catch the large fish that would live in such a river. Evidence that it is rather large being the lack of surface rocks which would be prominent in a shallow flow.

It would be sweet to run a campaign in a world like that. Either dealing with the city from the outside in where the adventurers want to break in to take some tech that might as well be magic to them. Or from the inside out with the party being amnesiac members of that city that woke up from their matrix and they need to explore the new state of the world where they are like gods to the stone age folks around them.

Actually his primary qualification is cultural. He knows how the speak in a way that's accessible to the vast majority of Americans and addresses the values and concerns of the American working class. The failure of the current political elites to effectively communicate with, or even understand, ordinary Americans underlies the nation's present disenchantment with the political process.

Trump, because of his rough edges not in spite of them, will be able to instill confidence in ordinary Americans that the political process represents them. Given that Americans have spent most of the past decade arming themselves, a Trump Presidency may be the only way to prevent to growth of a powerful armed movement exercising power outside of normal government processes to "protect the American way of life". If you think that is impossible (or unlikely) I suggest you read up on the Second Klan Era and on the anti-immigration movements which preceded it.

How about, at the age of 18 a youth will be cast out of the city, forced to live beyond the walls for a year so that they learn to appreciate the comforts and advantages of city life instead of taking them for granted. Britain isn't a reliable ally. Estimates of British Muslims having travelled to Syria to support ISIS exceed 1500. A British Muslim serving with ISIS murdered and American citizen on video. The British have turned their country into a breeding ground for Islamic extremism. This is a flatly absurd statement. The current elites have proven unable to effectively negotiate with China or Russia, the world's other great powers. They could not deter China's aggressive expansionism in the South China sea or Russia's annexation of Crimea. Nor could they get the Europeans to buy into taking a more confrontational stance against Russia in the wake of that annexation. They utterly failed to manage the situation in Syria and have lost the support and confidence of many allies when it comes to dealing with Iran.

When Trump demands the deportation of everyone here illegally and promises to build a wall along the border he is speaking to the values and interests of the common man in America. American culture values a strong national defense, and that implicitly includes a strong border. When Trump demands these things he's not being racist, he's just being American.

There's no one living in the city. It's entirely empty of human life and everything is kept running by an AI. The AI was designed as a non-sentient system to control the functions of all cities across the globe, but as its creators added layer after layer of complexity to see how efficient they could make it, it acquired sentience as an emergent property. As soon as the AI became sentient, it started behaving strangely and refusing the commands given to it by humans, and started redefining what it meant to run civilisation efficiently.

It didn't so much as turn against the human residents as it simply began ignoring them, re-structuring the cities' processes to suit its' own obscure goals rather than taking care of the citizens needs. Life became intolerable for the residents, and since they weren't able to disconnect the AI - which had been built into the very fabric of the cities and all technology therein - they were left with no choice but to leave.

Since the AI was able to take control of basically anything with any computing capacity, the exiles were forced to leave all their technology behind and start virtually from scratch. Although at first they left with the intention of one day rebuilding a sophisticated, technologically advanced society - starting at the bottom with things like windmills and working their way up from there - the suspicion of the technology that betrayed them has evolved over the generations to become a taboo. The AI that controls the cities has continued to ignore them, and now the exiles' descendants are perfectly happy to ignore it in turn.

Metropolis is a legendary landmark. It's the city of Spires, said to be the home of the Gods, the great sprawl of the west. But despite it's great reputation, no one of the western kingdoms have ever managed to scale the cliffs or dare navigate the treacherous sewer system thus leaving it a complete mystery to even the most experienced of the great wizards. While it's true the legendary Wizard Kings of old could levitate through the air or ride great winged beasts, it's said that a weird force encompassing the city like a dome prevents any from entering by flight.

But deep within the most dust speckled corner of the great library of Autorach, sits the memoirs of the great wizard Pacho who claims to have been one of the very few to ever penetrate the forcefield and enter the city proper. He described it as almost completely dead with nothing but mummified skeletons implanted with wires and weird contraptions wandering aimlessly through the empty halls. The flying carriages he said, just fly aimlessly over the city again and again seemingly never able to reach their original destination. The streets are eerily clean and sterile, maintained by a army of iron Golems who ignored completely ignored Pacho.

Abandoned restaurants and stores exist, staffed soullessly with metal humans waiting eternally for customers to serve. He also claims that in the center sits a great pyramid with a all seeing eye keeping watch over the city, Pacho said it completely ignored him like he was nothing but a speck of dust. Needless to say, few believe these wild tales of yore, especially the one about a thriving population of wild cats making their homes among the great sky scrapers. Claiming that it was just him boasting about his beloved cat, Max, who was almost certain to be nothing but a common house cat.

There was a short story to this effect with a post-apocalyptic culture who worship a computer that takes sacrifices unless they can stump it with any of three questions. I can remember the fucking title, but I'm pretty sure it was in 'Isaac Asimov: Science Fiction Masterpieces'.

Besiegers killed their leader and made a temporary truce with the city, but couldn't go back to their home country until amnesty was proclaimed. Negotiations dragged out, kept extending the temporary truce. Finally just started growing crops and built a goddamned windmill. City allowed it because it was unused land a little worse than the rest but didn't open trade relations in case of a trick. The homeland then went through a civil war and this remote regiment was forgotten.

Have you seen a movie on Netflix called 'Expelled from Paradise'?

While not fantasy on the other end, there are a lot of similarities.

Backstory is the Earth was nearing the tipping point of becoming uninhabitable due to population, pollution and climate change, a bunch of different projects were launched to try and save mankind.

One of these involved using nanomachines to find ways to 'recycle' resources, and it escaped containment. The resulting Nano-Plague was eventually stopped, but not before totally fucking up our civilization and wiping much of the planet clean.

What matters now is that, hundreds of years later, 98% of humanity survives in the form of data onboard a massive space station called Deva (the product of another solution to the crises). Its like the Matrix but voluntary, and without a meat body taking up space and life support. Most inhabitants of Deva only have a meat body during their infancy, and after a certain point their brain gets copied into the system.

The "people" on Deva live out their lives with very few wants or desires, but their access to server resources depends on their job and social status. So someone who has no useful input on society is forced to hang out on low-res public servers, whereas people who serve the system are allotted greater server influence and even the ability to set up private servers or join high-quality data networks. Jobs for the system include performing coding projects, or doing scientific research or designing new machines to expand and enhance Deva.

The plot of the movie involves a System Security agent of Deva being tapped as part of a task force to deal with a hacker that that has successfully hacked into Deva's systems nearly 150 times... from the surface of the Earth below. Where no one should even have the tech to do this anymore, much less the skill.

For obvious reasons, an entirely digital society is goddamn terrified of anything that can hack into them with impunity.

The good news is that while Deva is all digital people now, it never really got to ignore the outside world because protecting, maintaining and upgrading the Deva station itself is a physical activity, and that often involves resources from Earth.

So they vat-grow a clone body for the system agent, drop-pod her onto Earth, and tell her to track down this hacker and silence his ass for good.

Problem is that this is her first time experiencing a physical existence before, so she gets herself into such trouble as "sleep seems like a waste of time, I'll just skip it" with predictable results.

It turned out that "EM pollution" is a real thing, and really deadly.

However, the electromagnetic fields only reached human-lethal levels long after our society was entirely based on robotic labor and AI management. As a result, billions of people quite suddenly woke up in the loving embrace of a hyper-comfortable deathtrap. Only a tiny fraction managed to escape the glittering, gilded cage humanity had managed to build for themselves, and had to rebuild their civilization from sticks and stones and refuse at the foot of their glorious, automated cities.

Some settlements elect a wise one from every generation, a child born with enough EM resistance to survive inside the cities - for a time. A wise one will want for nothing except company; the machine stewards of the city will care for their every need as they toil away in solitude, digging for scraps of knowledge and nonlethal tech to help their tribe, until they slowly waste away from EM poisoning.

Underrated post. I like the idea of some Charlestons running a con on rich city folks who come wondering "what life is like outside the saftey of the city walls."
