Those are sexes, and are features, not bugs. Plants are mostly truly hermaphroditic because it means the maximum amount of offspring (any plant can mate with any other plant, including itself). Some fish, reptiles and amphibians are serially hermaphroditic (one to the other and back again) to balance out the sexes if there's a shortage.

Sex is different from gender. One is biology and the other is culture, and even the latter usually has a basis in biology. Exceptions to sex binary are very, very low, and are more of a genetic mutation than being an intrinsic part of the continuation of the species. And because of that rarity, certainly not a significant role in a culture usually.
