Unknown Armies.

Just burn it to the ground.

It's probably not going to work. There are games like Discordia Inc's "Shifters*" or Ben Robbins' "Microscope" that have good non-linear mechanics, but it's not going to help much.

At heart Donnie Darko is about 1 person who has no idea what the hell is going on. A TTRPG is about a group of people who know enough to be able to intelligibly play the game. Bridging the two is way, way harder than you probably realize, and to my knowledge no one has ever actually pulled it off at the adequate level, much less done it well.

The answer is always GURPS

Unknown Armies

Unknown Armies.

It's more a matter of presentation than rules. Look for ways to copy the themes and atmosphere of the movie.

>No party structure
>Messiah plot
>Paradoxical causality
>Exploring interpersonal themes with little action
>Inevitability

Donnie Darko is not a game. You can use some its themes to make a new game, but as is this just doesn't work. Games need different dynamics and challenges to be interesting.

Dark City would be easier to adapt.

Unknown Armies is a great game to explore dissociation, inexplicable personal powers, and the cracks in the facade of modern life. Mage features lore that can explain personal reality and pocket dimensions. Don't Rest Your Head has an excellent flow to dive down the rabbit hole on. None of those will do Donnie Darko, but they will do something that tastes similarly in many ways.

Cellar door

Unknown Armies or Don't Rest Your Head would probably work

>Dark City as a game

ALL OF MY WANT!

can someone explain to me what the hell this movie was actually about?

Stuffing itself full of shit and being pretentious.

It was a really bad movie.

Something something time travel something something universe-ending paradox something something hot sister.

Reality is plagued by time bubbles which can potentially annihilate existence itself. These occur when a part of reality detaches and becomes paradoxical. This is usually signified by an object that penetrates causality, in this case an airliner engine. A guardian is attracted to the object and their task is to shepherd the object back into reality so that the reality bubble can collapse and existence can continue. This guardian will be plagued by visions of paradoxical experience. This will drive them to discover their power to bend reality around them to fulfill their task. It has happened before to Roberta Sparrow, and she has written a cryptic book about the experience. Now it is happening to Donnie Darko.

This

Also, don't go into it with a specific idea of what the 'truth' is. Present the PC's with bizarre, contradictory and unexplainable situations and events and let them explore and play with them. Listen to your players, because the theories and connections they come up with will probably be more interesting than whatever you have in mind initially. Of course, you twist it a bit, because where's the fun in letting them guess exactly right, but it's an extremely effective technique for faking that you're really good at foreshadowing.

Donnie couldn't sleep one night and therefore survived when he should have died and needed to die it save the world. Really just a movie about a kid coming to terms with that he has to die. Like Jacob's Ladder except not at all.

>It was a really bad movie.
Nuh-uh

>lack of understanding reverting to anger
Why even come into a thread when all you have is baww?

Not sure about the saving the world angle. I thought it was about the girl.

Because it's Veeky Forums

Everyone is John
