It just works.

The "It just works" answer is, you can put anything inside it. Anything.
The "It makes sense" answer is, you can store anything you "own" inside. This means you have to "own" the Princesses to put them inside it unharmed. Otherwise, it's Mimic food. Which means you need the Breeding Contract.

So, one could theoretically keep their whole kingdom in it?

Yes actually, if you own every last cobble, twig, and person in it.
Which is easy enough if you manipulate the world appropriately.
