Is it possible to have semi-generic wolf men as a playable race in a setting without it being considered 'too furry' or 'magical realm'?

Depends on who you play with.

Sure.

Your image looks like a good place to start.

If you have wolfmen in your setting and I am a player, I wouldn't consider it too furry.

All that is the matter of context and presentation.

Why not just use Gnolls?
Pic mostly unrelated.

It depends entirely on how you handle it

But user, gnolls are hyena men.

They're also tremendous assholes.

Gnolls are more suited to an african style campaign setting.

Also I kind of wanted to use wolfmen too, but I feel bad about it because I also want my setting to have generic beastmen creatures that can and do rape everything to produce more of themselves. It would be somewhat redundant to have both beastmen and wolfmen, unless the wolfmen were some kind of 'racially pure' strain of beastmen maybe.

I think it can work, but the real problem is that adding a race in general can easily come off as forced. Particularly when there's already a bunch of them to work with.

I've kind of been wondering why DnD doesn't bother with more focus on a "beastmen" style race since it feels like they're more and more of a thing in trash fantasy these days. There's really only shifters and catfolk from what I remember
Since every single person who likes gnolls seems to be a furry that might be a bad place to start

Oh, there's plenty more that popped up in various Monster Manuals and supplement books down through the editions. It's just that most people didn't give a shit about beastmen races, and as such, interest in the subject remained low enough that they never really became prominent.

>generic beastmen creatures that can and do rape everything to produce more of themselves

Now that may be a challenge to keep from appearing like something sprung straight from your magical realm.

That's kind of what I mean though. Instead of their being a clear "beastmen" race there's a bunch of random races scattered around a few books. I'm just surprised that lizard tits and demon-spawn made it into the core books first (for better or worse), when considering the presence of animal people in fantasy compared to those. I probably just watch too much anime

D&D
Mystara campaign setting 1980-1995
Savage Coast region
Lupin
French wolf people
Also has a fuckton of other animal races.

They're a staple of fantasy games dating back decades. Fuck the oversensitive and easily triggered furry haters and just go with whatever you want.

Take it back to being a curse, and it shouldn't be hard to imagine a whole village or family line that pissed off a wizard something fierce.

>semi-generic
u wot m8

That looks super fucking furry.

>Gnolls are more suited to an african style campaign setting.
Why are people so fucking retarded?

As long as you make them more animal like and not cartoonish or edgy then most people won't have a problem with it

That sounds a lot like a particular furry porn comic, user. If you know what I'm talking about you 100% shouldn't do this.

I didn't before, but now I'm interested.

>This is not a realistic battle

What is the context?

Absolutely
Depending on your setting and general tone, it may work better to portray them as the result of a curse instead of a unique race, but that's really beside the point. If you don't want it to be fetishistic, just don't make it fetishistic.

OK, you shouldn't do this.

I do, but I think "magical realm" is only one way to do it. You could also use that sort of concept to make a race of complete cannon fodder that nobody minds cutting down because they're all fucking despicable and they take slaves for raping and fucking eating or some shit

I miss the days before having animal people in something made it get accused of being furry.

They dont know how to think outside the boxes they have created to categorize things in.

My gnolls are based on the Rabari, an ethnic group which is situated between Indians and Kazakhs. They are matrilineal and men tend to have lower status within the group. Plus imagining a hyena women looking like pic related pleases me.

And hyenas used to have a strong presence within western asia, so I still fall afoul of those pesky little category boxes

They're a staple for random NPCs. Nobody really plays them.

Well, I think dragonborn were supposed to be the "BRAND NEW" race to show off how much more Dungeon-y and Dragon-y 4e was, so they were made Core to show them off better, and that carried into 5e. Tieflings made Core because people wanted their badass half-demon something-or-others, and Wizards figured they might as well put the option in the PHB. Conversely, animal people were a fringe interest, and had been for the vast majority of editions and settings-without the devs or players keen on them, there was really no reason to give them any special attention.

Couldn't tell you why they became a thing in Japanese fantasy, though. Shining Force and Breath of Fire had them, but I'm pretty sure it started before those two. Maybe something to do with the Wizardry series?

If I remember Berserk correctly, demonic forces are squaring off against each other, and one of the humans present realizes just how fucking crazy it all is.

Would...would it be racist to have a Not!Africa setting and have all races be animal-people? Like, Lionfolk, Elephantfolk, Gorillafolk, Meerkcatfolk, etc?

Probably. I wouldn't let that stop you unless your group actually cares though

I have at least one black player who's pretty...well he buys into the We Wuz Kangz n Sheet stuff.

He's usually super chill, but he thinks "his people" built the pyramids.

So he's incapable of research I guess?

Anyway, I disagree with the other user. There's nothing racist about having a NotAfrica made up of animal people unless you're making everyone a monkey. It's no different than all those notEurope settings with fox and wolf people and shit.

Well we are talking about wolfmen

dibs on hyenafolk

user, please stop trying to force your femdom love into my original setting.

I mean...Gorillas and Chimpanzees are great as Orc and Goblin stand-ins. But that's only because of some superficial similarities.

Hyenafolk best folk.

Oh you can put in gorilla and chimp people just fine, just don't make them EVERYONE or the default PC race (basically your core focus kingdom/realm).

Is it for sex?
Do you self-identify as a wolf?

If the answer to these two questions is no, then there's nothing furry about it.

Yes, why would it imminently be furry or magical realm?

If the rest of the races are animal-morphs as well, and there are no humans in the setting, then it's okay
>A) Okay because there is no bestiality no matter what?
>B) Too furry, because now everyone has fur?

Sure just make em Sergals :^)

Ironically Sergal work great as a predatory fantasy race when taken out of the usual context.

This just gave me an idea

3 lion men brothers at war with each other in the Savannas of [insert setting here] over who will assume their father's throne.

Little do they know they are warring with each other due to the actions of a Gnoll matriarch who wanted revenge against their father for eating her son promising ruin for his clan and prosperity for hers (as Gnolls are being hired as mercenaries by all sides)

Posting best wolfman.

pic better be related

paladins should totally adopt stray/orphaned wolf girls and give them belly rubs for good deeds

posting best wolfwoman

That's a werewolf, user.

And what do they do with the male pups?

Why is she as tall as a building?

...

you introduce them to your wolf girl daughters and ship that more than a ship shipping ship ships shipping ships

so almost like sort of a beastfolk king lear? i like it

It's called perspective.

If you have one type of beastman, you should have others, otherwise it feels fairly magical realm AND furry.

Here's an idea for you: long ago, humanity pissed off the gods somehow, so the gods took away the humans superiority.

By causing every predator and dedicated omnivore to develop sentience and a demihuman form. But they sort of kept their own instincts and roles. Wolffolk are packhunters, Tigerfolk are solitary, Lionfolk form prides, Chimpfolk form troupes, etc.

The different beastfolk types cannot interbreed with other types or humans(no magical realm). Each has their own language, and most cannot speak human languages.

How do they interact with one another? That's more effort than I'm willing to do, so decide that for yourself if you want to use the idea.

Why aren't humans extinct then?

>It's called perspective.
That picture lacks it.

They may very well be on the path to extinction, depending on their tech level.

Medieval and later can probably break even, but anything earlier would probably slowly lose out.

You do realize she's jumping, right?

Are you visually handicapped?

I never liked beast races. They are almost always boring animal stereotypes and even when they aren't I have to wonder why they are even animal people in the first place.

Is that a Space Wolf?

>male child goes full hermit at the end of the movie
>during a rainstorm
>mother nearly dies to go get him

Man, I was liking that movie up until that little cunt-wipe went and did that.
