I wouldn't call it lazy. They spent a lot of effort to create an array of characters who tap into cultural tropes, avoid causing drama and remain reasonably memorable.

Eh, the archetypes are memorable, but the actual characters themselves blend into those stereotypes so much that they do not stand out from them.

McCree isn't bad, but he will always be in the shadow of Clint because he is, like many other characters in Overwatch, derivative and probably the product a lot of focus group testing.

Focus group testing is what a company does when they don't care about what their product looks like for it;s own sake, just that it looks like what sells.

I'm pretty sure it's less Focus Group Testing and more 'Hey, want want Clint Eastwood as a playable character'. I don't think Overwatch ever pretended to be original with any of it's archetypes.

Oddly enough, the characters I thought would be the cringiest in execution are the best ones.

I thought Genji would be shadow the edgehog revengeance edition. Turn out he's the funniest and most chillaxed dude in the game. He pulls off the 'enlightened as fuck' thing better than the actual enlightened as fuck character.

Winston is also extremely enjoyable. He's boring as hell to play but he's probably the most likable character.

You can really tell that certain characters were created at the inception of the project and therefore have rich backstories and enjoyable, human characterizations... whereas others, like Mei and D.va and the like, exist purely to pander to a certain group of people.

I don't think McCree is the best example of probable focus group testing.

However, I've gone through the entire character roster with my brother and there's not a one who can't be boiled down to an easily digested set of stereotypes.

I mean, I get it, it's not a character driven narrative game; it's a cartoony shooter.

But Blizzard shouldn't be credited for originality or quality work when designing Overwatch's characters - as many of them are insipid and/or just checkboxes on a demographic sheet.

The funny thing is, McCree is more Han Solo than Clint.

He's a lovable rogue. Most of Clint's characters were dour, anti-heroic shitheads. I think a lot of people may not have actually seen much Eastwood cinema.

I don't think there is many games anywhere with that number of characters that you can really not say that about. It's the nature of a wide character roster and limited room for in-game storytelling. You lose depth for it.

Originality? Definitely not. Quality? Absolutely.

It's a sci-fi shooter with a huge cast. There's no in-game plot beyond "fight and complete objectives", so they don't need a deep or impactful plot. The characters are designed with preexisting archetypes and tropes in mind, but the execution is well done. Each character's design is good and each character's personality is distinct. The setting is a fun sci-fi/mysticism/adventure romp with just enough touches of darker plotlines to make it mildly interesting. That's all Blizzard was aiming for and they hit the mark exactly.

You are literally the PLATs I was just describing. The thing is her kit is situational, only good on certain maps, and then only at certain points.

things to keep in mind with Symm, her ult charge is crazy fast, you only need to land a handful of bowlingballs, even post patch to get a telly up. Plenty of times I have gotten ult charges off of only two right clicks.

Another thing to consider is her ramp-up damage, that maxes out around 120dps. You can charge it on ice walls and barriers, as well as on invul characters (besides zarya bubbles) and to put 120 dps into perspective, thats more than genji's ult, which does 120 per swing, and can swing once ever 1.1 seconds. A flank Symm is a full retard tilt move, but ive gotten trips on squishy characters that weren't paying attention.

She isnt good, but at my level, she is far from useless. Lets the Mercy save her ult for big rezes since she knows a telle is up for the single deaths too.

The stereotypes do a lot for mechanics you know the better part of what most characters do by how they look.
