19th November in military history:

636 – The Rashidun Caliphate defeated the Sasanian Empire at the Battle of al-Qādisiyyah in Iraq.
1863 – American Civil War: U.S. President Abraham Lincoln delivers the Gettysburg Address at the dedication ceremony for the military cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
1885 – Serbo-Bulgarian War: Bulgarian victory in the Battle of Slivnitsa solidifies the unification between the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia.
1912 – First Balkan War: The Serbian Army captures Bitola, ending the five-century-long Ottoman rule of Macedonia.
1941 – World War II: Battle between HMAS Sydney and HSK Kormoran. The two ships sink each other off the coast of Western Australia, with the loss of 645 Australians and about 77 German seamen.
1942 – World War II: Battle of Stalingrad: Soviet Union forces under General Georgy Zhukov launch the Operation Uranus counterattacks at Stalingrad, turning the tide of the battle in the USSR's favor.
1944 – World War II: Thirty members of the Luxembourgish resistance defend the town of Vianden against a German attack in the Battle of Vianden.
1950 – US General Dwight D. Eisenhower becomes Supreme Commander of NATO-Europe.

It is 75 years since the battle between the Australian light cruiser HMAS Sydney and the German auxiliary cruiser Kormoran, off the coast of Western Australia. The two ships destroyed one another and Sydney was lost with all 645 hands. Most of the crew from Kormoran were rescued and became prisoners of war. The battle and sinkings remain controversial for a number of reasons. The loss of Sydney also deeply shocked Australia, as it had been considered one of the prime ships of the nation's still young navy.

HMAS Sydney was launched in 1934. She was a 6,830-ton, modified Leander class light cruiser, commissioned by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) in 1935. Her armament included eight 6-inch (152 mm) guns, in pairs, and four 4-inch (102 mm) guns, mounted singly. Externally, Sydney's most notable modification from the original Leander design was the re-trunking of the single, large funnel into two, much narrower and taller stacks, and she was uniquely distinguishable from her closer (RAN) sisters by a spar projecting forward from the bridge and by her single open-mount 4-inch guns (as opposed to shielded twin mounts), amidships. She also carried a Supermarine Walrus seaplane. In 1940, Sydney was credited with sinking a modern Italian cruiser during the Battle of Cape Spada, and two Italian destroyers in other engagements. After her return from the Mediterranean, command of Sydney passed to the relatively inexperienced Captain Joseph Burnett.

Kormoran, a freighter which had been converted into a covert, long-range merchant raider, was under the command of Fregattenkapitän Theodor Detmers. The German vessel was posing as the Dutch freighter Straat Malakka. Although Kormoran lacked the armour protection and speed of a proper warship, she had substantial concealed armament, including six 150-millimetre (5.9 in) guns and torpedo tubes. She had been in service for just over a year and had sunk ten merchant ships in the South Atlantic, Indian Ocean and the South Pacific.

In November 1941, HMAS Sydney undertook a mission to escort the troopship Zealandia to Sunda Strait. As Sydney was returning to Fremantle she sighted what appeared to be a merchant ship. This was the Kormoran, painted black and disguised. According to accounts by crew members of Kormoran, Sydney chased and overhauled the raider, which due to engine problems, could only make 14 knots (26 km/h). All this time, the ships were exchanging signals while Sydney was attempting to verify her identity.

Detmers maintained the charade as long as possible, to take full advantage of surprise and knowing that he had a better chance in a battle at close range, where the effects of Sydney's better guns, fire control and armour protection would be diminished. A series of deliberately muddled and badly displayed flag signals were sent by the German raider, as, over a period of 90 minutes, the range between the two ships steadily reduced. Burnett eventually demanded a secret letter code from Kormoran, by which time Sydney had approached to within about 1,000 metres (1,100 yd) of Kormoran. Seeing no other choice Detmers hoisted the German ensign and opened fire, and his crew went into action at 5:30 pm.

According to the crew of Kormoran, the Australian warship did not appear to be fully prepared for the battle—her main guns were trained on Kormoran, but her secondary guns were unmanned. They reported that Sydney was hit 50 times by the raider's 150-millimetre (5.9 in) heavy guns—a simultaneous salvo from the Kormoran's 37-millimetre guns and 20-millimetre anti-aircraft weapons scored direct hits on its bridge and open decks. Sydney's gunnery direction tower was also hit in this burst, impeding the ability of her turret crews to fire accurately. The Supermarine Seagull seaplane on board Sydney was hit, and its fuel caused a fire amidships.

However, the turrets on Sydney opened fire almost immediately, with a "bracket salvo" that fell on either side of Kormoran. Sydney then suffered hits from two salvoes on her bridge and midships section. It appears that the forward turrets ("A" and "B") were put out of action leaving only the after turrets ("X" and "Y") operational. The crew of Kormoran reported that Sydney's "X" turret opened fast and accurate fire, hitting Kormoran in the funnel and engine room, which caught fire. "Y" turret is said to have fired only two or three salvoes, all of which went over. Sydney was also hit in the bow by at least one torpedo.

Sydney then headed directly at Kormoran, and completed a 180-degree turn in order to use her starboard torpedoes. During the turn, "B" turret exploded; the top was blown off and fell overboard. At 17:45, four torpedoes were fired, but were near misses behind Kormoran. At the same time, the engines on Kormoran broke down.

Critically, Sydney was now exposed to further intense fire, this time along her starboard side. The volume of hits that Sydney had now sustained along both sides of her superstructure and the resulting fires would have seen the almost complete destruction of her lifeboats and rafts.

The Australian ship fired a last torpedo at 18:00 as she left the scene southwards, still under fire from Kormoran's rear guns, until 18:25, when Kormoran was abandoned. The Germans reported seeing Sydney on fire at the horizon until 10 pm that night, and saw flames emerging from time to time two hours later. Some time after the Australian ship disappeared from view, the Germans heard several loud explosions, and believed these to be fire reaching magazines on Sydney. None of the 645 RAN and RAAF personnel on Sydney were seen again (with the possible exception of an unidentified body later washed up on Christmas Island).

Kormoran had suffered damage that ensured its abandonment. The engine room was destroyed, there were already 20 dead and fire was approaching the mine storage area. Detmers gave the order to abandon ship at 18:25. Explosive charges were placed and the surviving crew took to the boats, with Detmers the last to leave. A further 40 men, mostly wounded, lost their lives when a lifeboat capsized in the rough seas. Shortly after midnight the charges went off, followed 25 minutes later by the mines. The entire stern and midships section was engulfed in a gigantic sheet of flame that shot 300 metres (980 ft) into the night sky as Kormoran went down by the stern.

Detmers, about 320 of his crew and three Chinese prisoners of war (POWs) were rescued from their lifeboats and liferafts by five merchant ships. A further two lifeboats came ashore north of Carnarvon. Nearly all of the Germans spent the rest of the war in POW Camps around Tatura, Victoria, from which they were not released until January 1947.

The dearth of evidence and the fact that the only survivors were from the Kormoran allowed the battle between Sydney and Kormoran to become the subject of some controversy, speculation and conspiracy theories over the years leading to the discovery of their wrecks in March 2008.

One on the one hand this famous battle could make for an unusual ship-on-ship action, with rules to simulate the deception and some smart moves required by the captains. But running a commerce raider game could also make for interesting campaign play, especially for the solitaire gamer.

This month's community project is a food/drink-related mini or unit.

>So, I've been combing the mini provider list, but I can't find anyone who has Irish Volunteer / Original IRA minis. Should I just use Australian or British WWI troops?

Reiver Castings do an Anglo-Irish War range you could look at: reivercasting.wordpress.com/anglo-irish-wars-1916-1923-irish-rebellion-irish-war-of-independence-irish-civil-war/

Aussies would be fine in the right shade of green. The biggest thing would be the ammo pouch bandolier; Australian Light Horse often wore one too so they work particularly well. Also look at Boers, some of the more organized commandos also wore similar uniforms.

For Irregulars he could also try Footsore they do some Easter Rising types if I recall.

Modern Spearhead in 6mm

Interesting that this redcoat is depicted with orange facings; assuming it's an accurate colouring (and it seems so) that means he could be from only one unit, the 35th (Sussex) Regiment. This was the only foot regiment in the British Army to have orange facings (until 1832 when they were designated Royal and consequently adopted royal blue). They were granted by King William III (of Orange) as a mark of special favor and in recognition of the Protestant character of the Regiment. The regimental nickname was "The Orange Lillies", the orange for obvious reasons, and the Lily allegedly for the lillies (fleur-de lis) on the flag of their conquered foes at Quebec, the Royal Roussillon regiment

The 1st Battalion spend the Napoleonic Wars in the Mediterranean, serving in Egypt, Sicily and the Ionian Islands. as well as a trip to the Walcheren disaster of 1809. The 2nd Battalion was at Waterloo, in the Reserve.

Anyone here play fistful of tows?

I've played a few matches with modern forces, why do you ask?

Trying to figure out how too add in SVBIEDs but having never actually played was wondering if you might have some advice for homebrewing them in

If I were to go about adding SVBIEDs to a game I'd treat them essentially as a mobile marker for a one use area attack without the need for a spotter.

This would mean the vehicle drives up, you "detonate" the vehicle and from there on in treat it as a normal artillery barrage, don't know what kind of barrage you'd want to use, but that should achieve the same effect.

And before they detonate jjust treat them as an armoured vehicle?

Before they detonate they're basically just a vehicle packed with explosives anyway, so yeah, they should be treated as a normal armoured vehicle

Sweet. Ill have to give thought to figuring out its point value.

Managed to resist adding the pendraken awi British army pack to my lead pile whilst at reading warfare today.

Couldn't resist a couple of packs of woodland creatures and yet another pack of Indians though.

Pretty cool set up there in all

What do you think about my camo? Does it look right or should i add more of one of the colors before i continue with decals and chipping?

I always struggle when doing camo, but having only vehicles with dunkelgelb only gets kinda boring

World War II Croatian Legionaries: Croatian Troops under Axis Command 1941-1945
(Osprey Men-at-Arms 508)

As Europe descended into war the newly formed state of Croatia found itself an ally in Nazi Germany. Tens of thousands of Croatians volunteered for the German Wehrmacht, with Croatian-badged units created within the Army, Navy, Luftwaffe, Waffen-SS and Police force. When Hitler turned his attention to Stalin's Soviet Union many of these men found themselves thrown into the fray, with Croatian soldiers serving at Stalingrad, fighting Tito's Partisans in the Balkans and battling against the advancing Red Army in Hungary. Aided by detailed illustrations, author Vladimir Brnardic explores the uniforms and equipment of World War II Croatian Legionaries.

Very nice. Thank you user!

Thanks a bunch, guys.

Just a reminder that John from Picoarmor is an amazing guy. Just made a largeish order (which he packed and shipped right away) but the shipping ended up cheaper than his standard price so he refunded me the difference once he found out.

Amazing stand up guy.

How hard would you need to squint to use late WW2 Americans as ARVN?

I need some support weapons in 1/72

I want to use Korean War US for that. Check the IMEX box, it has machine guns (the Bren can be converted to a .30cal easily), and you can get mortars from the North Korean box.

Barrage should be surprisingly small but generally accurate. You're not really getting anywhere near the effect of a battery of artillery shelling an area, so a single fire unit of something like 120mm to 170mm+ depending on the vehicle ought to do it. Alternatively, stat them as an airstrike with general purpose bombs, mostly a light or medium type I'd think would suffice.

What are the best Naval games?

I only played Harpoon and computer games like Harpoon like Command.

What era, scale and level of simulation vs quick gameplay?

I guess I would not mind a age of sale game, but I was thinking WW1-WW3 era or Modern era.

I am open for quickplay or simulation. Though I suspect Modern simulation that Harpoon is the main game.

On the computer side of thing Rule the Waves is pretty good even if it is less historical naval battles and more mash your Fisherian crimes against ship design against computer's crimes against ship design.

>Rule the Waves
Thank you, will have to look into it.

Have fun.

If you're looking for WW2, I can recommend Naval War, a free living ruleset, version 1.3 of which will be released on the 25th.

>your Fisherian crimes against ship design against computer's crimes against ship design

Heh

Convoluted & illogical - but absolutely true.

You wouldn't believe the designs AI cooks up ...

Would cavalry count?

>Fisherian crimes
You got any of those warez so I can try before I buy?

I actually ordered it as a early birthday gift...now just waiting for the code to be emailed... Can't wait to lose in glorious fashon

Any recommendations on starting out on Rule the waves? I am already in love with the game?

Austria Hungry so you only have to mess with the med? Japan so you can avoid the major powers?

>Austria Hungry so you only have to mess with the med?
Italy would be more fun for that. AH are truly awful.
My first game was germany, decent budget, mostly european theatre of operations, not too strong, not too isolated.

Starting musket and tomahawk soon, taking the opportunity to try and paint a colonial

That doesn't look ambiguous to me. It looks like a plain old battleship. It's got several high power batteries, and it's huge. That being said, I'm a scrub.

>High power
High caliber even. I need sleep.

Damn, stop posting musket and tomahawk minis.. they always look so tempting.

I still have ww2 stuff to do.

Your mini looks nice. Very gritty in a good way if that makes sense. Where is the mini from?

thanks! wargames factory's colonial militia set

Totally not a battle cruiser guise, it's a Large Cruiser. Nevermind that it's totally built like bc which is totally a valid ship design that fills a useful fleet role and isn't a poser battleship wannabe.

It's USS Alaska, if you're actually interested. It was basically a battlecruiser that the US built after they quit being fashionable, so they made up an entirely new class designation, Large Cruiser, to avoid the embarrassment.

>Early in its development, the class used the US battlecruiser designation CC, which had been planned for the Lexington class. However, the designation was changed to CB to reflect their new status, "large cruiser", and the practice of referring to them as battlecruisers was officially discouraged.[16] The U.S. Navy then named the individual vessels after U.S. territories, rather than states (as was the tradition with battleships) or cities (for which cruisers were named)

Haha wow

Just finished up down at the local club. Played Ostfront: Italians vs British. One of the hardest games I've ever played, with both commanders trying their utmost to use all units to their maximum capacity. I played the Italians, and attempted to rush a flank with Carro Armatos, and was able to sieze the initiative and ace the recon, allowing me to mine one section of the battlefield. My Autocannone da 90s wrecked havoc on the British infantry and slowed down some Matildas, but the 6-prds of the Valetines proved fatal for my Carro Armato light tanks at close range, and my main flank attack failed. We both sustain heavy casualties, but in the end the British were able to pull a close victory, having contested one of my table quarters by sneaking up a unit of infatry behind the cover of a burning carro armato. Good game!

other games being played:
Blucher - a Napoleonic Lutzen scenario which was massive
TANKS! - 2 Panthers + 2 Pz. IVs vs 4 T34/85
Some X-wing, warmachine and a group of guys playing a marvel super hero game.

I haven't played Ostfront but is that really the intended amount of terrain for it?

we were aiming for a north Africa style battle so a bit sparse on the terrain side. We would usually have a bit more, and for a city battle, a LOT more. You can actually roll tor terrain type in the rules - there are 6 different types from desert with scattered ruins to battles on a river with bridges, to dense city fights. We tend to either try to match the setting or just go for an "average" amount of terrain, which might cover ~25% of the table.

Pic is the start of the game showing the full table. Everything neatly deployed and ready to go - and the recon cards placed in the middle.
In hindsight I should have taken more light vehicles for recon instead of sacrificing my carro armato light tanks for the job. They did take the cards, but were destroyed in the process!

To be honest, it looks very dark. I would recommend doing a full sepia wash and reapplying the base colors, but make the brown lighter. Then highlight everything! Every edge should be 2 tones lighter. If you are lazy Dry brush it with a sand color.

Next time download a Tamiya paint guide for the tank model. They usually have a well balanced color scheme. I don't recall the scheme you use having a lot of horizontal stripes as you applied you could clean those up with dunkel

Anyone have Hitler's Russian and cossack allies 1941-45? Osprey men at arms

Where do you get your stuff particularly that wonderful tiny terrain.

In our WW2/Osprey folder, we only just got it a couple of weeks ago

mediafire.com/file/m7442jnx3pscpuu/Osprey - MAA 503 - Hitler's Russian & Cossack Allies 1941-5.pdf

Check out this blog: modernspearhead.wordpress.com/

I must have been sleepy when i checked, because i couldnt find it.

Here is a picture of my infantry for a coming 500 point BA2 match. Going to field a hano 251 (wish i had a 250) and a heavy field car. Basically engineers w. flamer to kill whatever is in a building or bunker. Hano loaded up to do an outflank and try to kill something expensive like an artillery piece. Lt and other squad for objective grab(s). Supposed to meet up w. a buddy to pickup the field car but he isnt answering his phone AND I WANT TO START PAINTING NOW SO IT WILL BE DONE BY NEXT WEEKEND

any tips on making the commander stand out would be appreciated. All other advice also very welcome!

dude order some 15mm MDF laser terrain it costs nothing and make the table look decent. Currently table is too small and doesnt do any justice to your minis. Also that parking lot/tank rows is the worst

>it costs nothing and make the table look decent
I guarantee he is happy with how that table looks.

I agree with the tank rows though, unsure if its because they are playing lenthways (for some reason) or because having 20 tanks on a battlefield in 1:72 is too many.

>any tips on making the commander stand out would be appreciated.
Is he the bloke with the feldmütze in the front row? Immediately made me think of Steiner. You should give him a camo jacket and a PPSh-41.

See I don't build badnoughts, I just abuse the superstructure designer to give all my ships wings and pretend they're flying, make them look like pulp rocketships.

I also just read Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors and feel slightly more guilty about running DD swarms into things willy-nilly.

Not enough to not do it, because once you get some tech in the relevant areas they can sink fucking everything. Early on they're pretty useless though.

Just using club terrain and tables. Their 6' X 4' tops are a bit small and 1/72 is a bit large in general for WW2 so get some sardine fun, especially at the start of the battle before they've had a chance to spread out or be destroyed. We usually play on a slightly larger table. We rolled one of the most compact deployments as well so things are pretty crammed in. Just gotta remember that its a wargame and things are abstract. 1 tank represents 2 tanks in real life and is more of a "marker" for the unit. At smaller scales like 10mm this becomes less of the case.

>they are playing lenthways (for some reason)
There are 5 different deployment types, we roll for them at the start of the battle. 5 deployments and 5 scenarios / objectives helps keep things interesting. This deployment was "spearhead" where forces are somewhat concentrated on the short edges.

lol, that isnt a steiner model, but will paint the jacket a tan/white color like in the movie.

The Lt. is the guy 2 models to the right. He is holding binoculars. Also its hard to convert these models, all metal from Blacktree

Man, I love that game, but Pre-Dreadnought battles at the beginning are about as exciting as watching paint dry.

It makes you REALLY grateful for the Dreadnoughts later on ...

I am so incredibly hyped for RtW2 though. I mean, I paid full price for RtW and love it to bits - if RtW2 comes close to living up to that, then I'll pay, like, double full price.

Or pay full price and buy a copy for a friend.

Found a rather obscure moderns skirmish ruleset from 1995: Tactical Command, by Medallion games. Covers 1:300 vehicles only though, apparently. Doesn't seem particularly good but you can never have enough games, right?

What's the reccomended scales for it?
will my 15mm modern stuff work for it?

What movie is that?

Cross of Iron

1:285 or 1:300 only, I guess you could play around with the distances

Started reading this last night, can already tell this is one of the better ones even though annoyingly the cut-off for the book is the year 1600, so misses out on the 30 years war that I've actually been trying to get a decent warfare focused read about, this one has been straight in with information about how things like the English battle tactics developed in fighting the Scots and actually bothering to question and analyse the generally accepted assumptions of early firearms and their effect on the battlefield. Pretty sure in just a intro and a chapter I've already learned more than in the entirety of Urban's Matchlocks to Flintlocks.

I've heard several really good recommendations for that book, and I've been kicking myself for not picking up a copy of it I saw in a second hand store in Charleston a couple of months ago.

Apart from Gripping Beast and Footsore, what's a good source for early dark ages Germanics? Say 6th-9th centuries AD. I'm looking to make a Saxon army and I want my armored troops to have a bit more character than just everyone in chainmail. Some Alannic helmets, scale armor, lamellar etc would be nice.

no..not a really good system. I remember buying it at a con when I was stationed in Long Beach in '95. Me and a couple other guys messed around with it a few times. We didnt like it.

could be that it didnt come with shit for minis....think maybe 4 or 5 tanks...no infantry. and this was at the time where we didnt have the internet to go online and order minis. had to actually find a store that carried the ones you wanted.

Good god do we live in great times nowadays

Wargames Foundry, Artizan Designs, Crusader Miniatures, Saxon Miniatures, West Wind, Black Tree Designs.

Those are the ones I can think off the top of my head. Quality differs between them as does scale and 'style'.

Just finished "Forgotten Soldier"

Any other good Ww2 eastern front memoirs out there?

you have no idea!

Tiger im Schlamm /Tiger in the Mud by Otto Carius.

The english translation isn't that great sadly.
It might not be the best book ever written, but seeing Carius career i think its kinda worth reading anyway.

I also enjoyed "Im Auge des Jägers" (Sniper on the Eastern Front: The Memoirs of Sepp Allerberger in english).
I have no idea how good or bad the english version is though, ive read it in german.

Some pictures I stole from a naval wargaming zuckerbook page

I saw those too. Aside from the shadows the islands up top cast, it was a pretty amazing effect.

Yeah, also saw that dropping by.

Quite inspiring.

>Islands don't extend down to the sea floor
what are they turtles or something?

I'm not sure why they didn't just go ahead and make two part islands, but like I said aside from that bit of weirdness, I think it looks pretty damn amazing.

>The game is set in the far future where massive plastic islands have formed ecosystems on top of themselves
>After the crash of past empires and the fall of technology, sail ships have taken over the seas once again

Too bad there aren't sky scrapers visible in the deeps, with a trimaran and tiny Kevin Costner on one of the beaches.

Imagine playing something islandless but with more naval minis without bases.
Then add some more colour to the seafloor.

That would already look pretty amazing.

It's a sheet of shower glass sitting on stands above a blue vinyl mat. If it were more permanent board you could do to two part islands or use a jigsaw to cut holes in the glass for islands.
